Last year, GAFer Shouta helped organize donations from various FGC-GAF members to send fellow member QisTopTier to EVO. Q suffers from Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, but has always wanted to go to EVO and we're looking to double up this year and send him to EVO again!

If you want to help out, you can check out the details and pledge on this spreadsheet.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at RomanceDawn!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Super Smash Bros Wii U is all I play at the moment and so far it is my all time favorite. That title used to go to Soul Calibur 2. I’m really big on all the new Nintendo characters introduced and new mechanics of Smash Wii U. As far back as Smash 64 I wished for guys like Meta Knight, Little Mac and even Ridley. So as balls to the wall crazy as 64 and Melee can be in competitive play, I just didn’t have as much interest competitively because I didn’t have the characters I truly wanted. At least thats what I assumed until I realized I was always in love with DK but by that time Brawl rolled around. Smash Wii U just hit so many right marks for me I don’t even know where to begin. One main thing though is that there are certainly characters that aren’t nearly as viable as others but I have yet to see any Brawl style Captain Falcons. I am very pleased with the game’s balance, for the most part anyway.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
I… I don’t really know to be honest. I suppose I love the new ledge mechanics in Smash Wii U/3DS! Crap recoveries actually have a chance now and it makes off stage play so much more fun. I love trumping people then getting that back air or spike. DK has about 4 spikes and all but one are useful and being a dare devil with the new ledge mechanics has never been more fun.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I hated fighting games before Smash and Soul Calibur. HATED! Mainly because I was just no good(I say that as if things have changed). Watching my friends and family go to town with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat always made me miserable because of not being able to grasp the most basic of mechanics. With Smash it’s pretty self explanatory how that made me feel at home but it was Link guest starring in Soul Calibur 2 that made me jump to a more traditional 3D fighter. Something about the Soul Calibur franchise clicks with me that things like Tekken and Street Fighter don’t. I don’t know why but I took to Soul Calibur so well, I would practice at home and use my knowledge in the arcades. Soul Calibur even inspired me to forge my career in martial arts which led to acting and stunts.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
It should be Ridley(one day…) but at the moment it is Donkey Kong. He’s a big character that doesn’t have too many options and he gets bodied to high heaven but man do I love him! Just look at that design! If I could be any animal it would be a gorilla. Aside from the childhood love that started with Donkey Kong Country I tend to prefer big characters that fight with just their bodies and no gizmos or gadgets. It makes it insanely difficult to get in on opponents that use heavy projectile users but for me it’s worth it. People sleep on big characters so much, especially DK, no one expects much out of him so when I’m really feeling it and pull of some amazing stunts against a well known known player in a certain community it just feels really good.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I play online quite a bit, only occasionally do I visit local tournaments or gather with my fellow nerds. I’ve never won a tournament but I feel like I do a little better each time. Online I play on Anther’s ladder and I really like the system because of how straight forward it is. However I’m married with 2 kids so getting to play as much as I want just doesn’t happen like it used to.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is probably that I have a very cool head. Losing can be really annoying but you would be hard pressed to actually make me mad having that affect my play. Well so long as the mechanics are just and no Dedede style infinite moves come into play. Because of this I don’t give up, I just keep on trucking, gradually improving no matter how hard the match up or how many losses I accumulate. So this is good and bad as I am very stubborn. Everyone tells me, I should play other characters who can deal with the bad match ups other wise I’ll lose and yada yada yada. I care enough to play, visit these scenes and try to get good, but as silly as it may sound to the competitive, I don’t care to win that much. I am not happy playing as Fox, Shiek, Rosalina or Diddy(curse Diddy and his DK64 inspired move set! Get rid of that rocket barrel, peanut gun and generic banana then we’ll talk!) I’d rather lose as DK than win as Diddy. That’s just the type of person I am. I don’t have to win it all, I just like the respect.

Oh and I love spiking people, so I often try waaaaay to much. So much so that it gets me killed occasionally. I also get stuck on auto pilot sometimes, so the things I do, I can do fairly well, but as Shamrock put it, a good player will see that right away and punish accordingly.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
I don’t have too many super great moments in my alleged fighting game career, at least nothing I can remember. Just yesterday I was in tournament with over 150 people and made it only up to round 4 but I loved that people were asking to play me because they had never faced a competent Donkey Kong before. Just getting that little bit of respect was nice.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I know I’m going to be run out of town for this but the dreams of men never die! I want fighting games to become more simple. Now maybe not the franchises that are already established and have their followings but maybe newer franchises. Pokken is giving me some hope so there is at least that. I’m just the type that can’t invest as much time as I once did into video games period but I do still love them so learning really super intricate combos and movement mechanics just really turn me off now a’days.

Oh and Ridley, gotta have more Ridley. He’s been in like 5 fighting games now right? He needs to be playable!
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Leave it to the masses!
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?
Star Fox Zero , Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi’s Woolly World and thats all that comes to mind.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or (preferably) PM me to let me know.

So RomanceDawn chose to let the thread vote for who does the spotlight next. So if you want to nominate someone, or nominate yourself (IMPORTANT: if you nominate yourself you have to be able to get the answers to me by Sunday night), nominate who you want to do it in tags. Example:

Kanye West

Check here to see if someone has done it already or not. I'll count the votes over the next 24 hours.

Basically it was universally positive until gems got announced and it started going downhill fast.

The idea of txsf doesn't even sound that appealing to me...Like tekken and 3d games have a whole lot of rules that a 2d character would break or not mesh well with where as I think the transition from 3d to 2d would have a lot less hang ups.

I am intensely curious as to whether Harada will find a genius way to make Hadokens relevant in a 3D fighter, or if he'll just Tekken it.

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
If you want a 3D fighter with projectiles and air dashes and whatnot, just play Virtual On.

I was thrilled that CEO actually had a cab in the arcade room. That took up most of my free time for the weekend.

EDIT: What is this thread title even referencing?

a like one page discussion curlyw, myself and a few other people had. Kinda seems specific and unimportant but whatever.

I feel like something involving some permutation of "playing low quality games, Urienating on walls" could work for... I don't even know anymore

You know, even if you didn't like Injustice you gotta give it credit for providing us with our favorite thread title.

If you want to be a gorilla then why is your avatar a merman?

Tizoc

It's rather surprising he hadn't been interviewed yet, I see him often on FG threads.

While I'm at it, I wrote a little something about SNK lore here, hopefully the first of many: http://dreamcancel.com/2015/06/29/exploring-kof-xiii-dialogues-mai-and-the-shiranui-legacy/

Throwing your sword in Nidhogg.

At first it seems stupid ("Why would you throw your weapon away?") but divekicks in Nidhogg are hella fast and can hit your head above a raised sword. If your reactions are good, though, you can throw your sword when the opponent is in the air and it'll kill them.

It's just a really cool way to kill a player, and the sound effect that goes with it is great.

Fake answer: Faust's hammer- i.e., I threw an item at a terrible time right as my opponent decided to jump/airdash at me and instead of being punished for my poor play, they get counterhit by hammer :}

Real answer: using point Dante jam session while calling vajra to anti-air opponents at superjump height into full comboz

Bonus- dumbest anti-air: bionic arm. WHY DOES IT HIT SO HIGH!?!
