WASHINGTON ― More than 48 hours after white supremacist groups sparked deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, President Donald Trump denounced them under public pressure to do so.

”We condemn in the strongest possible terms this display of hatred, bigotry and violence," he said in an impromptu statement on Monday after returning to the White House from his golf club in New Jersey.

”Racism is evil, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, Neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to what we hold dear as Americans," he added.

Over the weekend, Trump came under widespread criticism for not immediately denouncing the far-right groups, instead blaming ”many sides" for Saturday's mayhem.

New news, new thread.

Update1: Trump responded to people who noticed how long it took him to actually address these racist groups (thanks studyguy!):

All it took was the entire nation, media, foreign leaders and a CEO of a pharma company being down on him.

No problems here.

New news, new thread since the other one is rather big.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump bowed to overwhelming pressure that he personally condemn white supremacists who incited bloody demonstrations in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend — labeling their racist views “evil” after two days of equivocal statements.

“Racism is evil,” Mr. Trump said. “And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the K.K.K., neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Several of the president’s top advisers, including his new Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, pressed Mr. Trump to issue a more forceful rebuke after his comment on Saturday that the violence in Charlottesville was initiated by “many sides,” prompting nearly universal criticism.

That pressure reached boiling point early Monday after the president attacked the head of the pharmaceuticals company Merck, who is black, for quitting an advisory board over his failure to call out white nationalists.

Merck’s chief executive, Kenneth C. Frazier, resigned from the president’s American Manufacturing Council on Monday, saying he objected to the president’s statement on Saturday blaming violence that left one woman dead on “many sides.”

I can't believe he actually said that. Wow

Edit: not because he has somehow discovered empathy (as if), but because it seems counterproductive to courting the deplorables, which seem to be the few people still "approving" of him.

Yep.

Literally days into office, Trump decided that defunding groups looking into right wing a white supremacy extremism was of utmost importance.

Now we should believe a word he says about right wing and white supremacist attacks, after refusing to acknowledge their existence until it got to unbearable international embarrassment.

After which he will go consult Steve Bannon and Jeff Sessions about the best way to stamp out the rise of right wing extremism in America. Right?

Get fuuuuuuuuucked.

LMAO

The President being the last guy to condemn outpourings of racism and racist terrorists only after being upstaged by his GOP people and VP means 10000000000x more than this rehearsed speech written for you by Ivanka.

You had the chance to say all this and instead started stroking your dick instead of paying tribute to the victims of the attacks.

Get fucked.

The people who do this shit in his name and with his silent backing already know that he didn't want to say it and already know that this was a written speech he was forced to do by advisors after being told being silent on racism will hurt his numbers.

.

"he wasn't talking about us" is what a lot of them will say.

This is meaningless to me until Trump admits that he contributed to where we are today as a nation. Racism never went anywhere but actual fucking Nazis being a thing again at this level of openness is 100% on Trump.

Completely misleading headline.

"Two days late and under fire, Trump reads out an aide's generic statement"

Half-hearted and waaaay too late for him to really save face.

Plus, I "like" how he said "including", so as to still give some semblance that BLM, "Antifa" and the like still share the blame.

Legitimately surprised he said that. Guess the political ramifications of not saying it were going to be too heavy.

Also, kinda sucks to live in a world where the President saying racism is bad is breaking news.

i guess donald trump saw what happened to the black teen in charlottesville and thought it was a good idea

Surprised he didn't add BLM to those list of groups he called out since he seems to think they are a hate group as well.

Still nothing about the girl that died though, right?

He didn't really say it. He read the words off a teleprompter and a hand up his butt made his mouth spit the words he read on the screen out.
He felt so sick afterwards he treated himself to three scoops of ice cream.

Too many Republicans calling him out. He had to do damage control... But the damage is done.

He did, without mentioning it. By using "including" he is suggesting the left and the victim are equally at fault!

This is the equivalent of "its just a prank bro". He is only saying what he needs to say because he got called out for his bullshit.

He literally was reading this straight from a script. Not a sincere word in his entire statement.

You shouldnt need a teleprompter to tell you that racism is bad. You should be able to just say it.

Duh, but it's still shocking that he actually said it.

Not shocking in the least to me. This was always the plan. Vague denouncement of violence on many sides initially, followed by a carefully worded, insincere statement days later. Nazis are watching this saying, "He had to say that for political reasons, but we know how it really feels."

Call me when Trump speaks from the heart on the subject.
