Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine is putting in work on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. So are the talented artists who lovingly crafted this game's characters and environments.

Let's appreciate the vibrant colors and intricate details in this game's warped version of the Mushroom Kingdom. I'll start with some shots I took from the game's opening hour. I tried to capture unique visual elements while timing it to minimize cloud cover and pollen particles!

This art style would be perfect for a new Mario RPG.
Yep, I keep thinking: THIS is how a Super Mario RPG 2 would look on a modern console. And it's glorious.

Has that same sculpted look that made Mario RPG feel so tangible.

I also can't help but picture a Mother 4 in this style. Maybe it's the characters following each other?

Does the Switch allow you to take decent screenshots by now? I remember all the ones I took in Zelda looked like garbage
Can't tell if they fixed it or if the artstyle of this game just works better.

Did they fix the terrible screenshots at some point or do you work some magic to get such clear screens?
The screens are taken with the Switch's capture button in docked mode. No modifications. What you see is what you get.

I've also seen handheld screens and they look good too. Indistinguishable as best as I can tell.

The difference might be that I copy/paste them straight from my SD card, rather than uploading to social media.

Zelda screens look great in docked mode. You'll have to patiently wait for the right lighting conditions for the most vibrant colors, though. It has that effect like distant blue mountains in real life where it applies a sort of light haze to convey a sense of distance, or to convey the moisture in the air during a steamy summer day.

Nope, still compressed to hell jpg. Here's hoping for a future PNG update!

But why are the text bubbles so janky? They look like placeholders. The corners are... rough... font has no personality compared to everything else in the game haha.

Thought it was just me, been playing the game and it's great but the text/font and speech bubbles are awful, the text itself seems janky on screen.
Really odd because the rest of the visuals are really smooth.

Other than the gloss on Mario's overalls, this game is absolutely BEAUTIFUL.

I agree with the Super Mario RPG sequel running on this engine...but guys.

GUYS.

IMAGINE A POKEMON GAME LOOKING THIS AMAZING.

Please don't do this...my heart can't take it.

Man, this looks like a graphically upgraded SM3DW.

Also nice to see a Mario game with AA. Wish Nintendo would do that, too.

Shame about the compression on these shots, though. Nintendo, please, just give us a PNG option.

Speaking of the gloss on Mario's overalls, I'm pretty sure the plasticine look is meant to be evocative of toys, given the game's opening scene.

As for the text and text bubbles, I think they look fine. Nice and clean!

That's some gorgeous water. Reminds me of a swimming pool birthday cake I saw in a cookbook when I was little, where the water was made of jelly.

From my post in the OT:

I took a few screenshots to show off the fantastic lighting in this game. The lighting and real-time shadows are truly impressive. Snowdrop is doing some work. Check out the party's shadows cast on the barrel over to the right. I noticed them when I ran by and had to go back to capture a screen:

Notice the floating candles casting a gentle, dynamic glow on the house. At a different angle they glow against that blue pipe. They even cast shadows on each other:

As the candles float in and out of the pipe, their light is cast in and out as well. Also note the ripples in the carpet, which for some reason just blew me away. The attention to details is so great.

A few different sources of glowing light here:

These Shy Guy bookcases are AMAZING. This is a DIY project for the future. I will have one of these in my house:

Got a bit of a Dark Souls vibe seeing this ghost town (pun intended) sprawled below:

Celebrating a few more long shadows as summer winds down in Tennessee and it begins to cool off here:

This simple little stretch, which 99% of you will run STRAIGHT past on the way to your next battle, froze me in my tracks. The colors and frosty-fruity environmental details just took me straight back to my childhood. This picture is comforting to me for some reason:

One more for the road. One of my favorite things in Mario games are those pill-shaped, multi-colored hills. I assume they're hills, anyway. I loved the way they were rendered in Captain Toad, and I love the way they're rendered here:

Edit: By the way, this game NEEDS a photo mode! I'd love to see an official, built-in photo mode in a future patch or update that enhances pictures server side with increased resolution, additional anti-aliasing, filters, no on-screen UI, etc.

I was thinking the same thing. Congrats to UBI for utilising Switch with their engine very effectively. Gives hope for possible future projects from them, other third parties and makes one wonder how much can Nintendo top this with their home advantage.

The contrast and vibrancy of this tropical blue and lush summer green is just incredible.

Just started and I knew it was a looker but it really is impressive in person. Bodes well for the future titles and it shows it's plenty powerful enough for me with the proper art direction.

Pretty sure she was commenting on the other posters amazement that this is on a tablet, referencing that another beautiful game, Captain Toad, was also viewable on a tablet like device. Just that screen is a total piece of shit in comparison to the Switch screen.
