holy shit this game is so pretty.

like damn odyssey got some competition

In terms of IQ, I don't know if any game on the Switch comes close thus far. The game really is astonishing even more so when you're actually playing on your tv and/or the switch screen itself.

Picked this up digitally at midnight launch and haven't even opened it yet! Looks gorgeous and I can't wait to sink some time into it.

And it looks even better in motion. Character animations are great and very detailed!

Good job Ubisoft! This Snowdrop engine better be utilized more!

I wish Odyssey looked like this.

So as a Switch and M+R owner (who feels like the Switch is easily a top 3 console of all time for me):

Does this game look a bit...Muddy? Like, the visuals are beautiful, but it always looks just a HAIR out of focus. What gives?

Cause is both the anti-aliasing solution and heavy depth of field effect which make the game look very blurry especially compared to every first-party Nintendo game. I'm not a fan of it.

Seems to be an artistic choice: a combination of anti-aliasing to smooth out edges and eliminate jaggies, and a depth of field effect to gently blur that which is not in focus (usually to convey distance). I think it works well here since the game has this sculpted look and feel to its materials, like they're handcrafted out of clay. I'd love to see someone make dioramas of these maps. :)

The combination of their aggressive AA solution and DOF seems to be the issue.

Same answer from 3 different people all in a row.

Glad I'm not just "seeing it wrong".

The game is a ton of fun, so I can sort of write it off...But it's not the best thing to look at in picture form.

They did a really good job on this game, It's shocking they were able to do it considering the hardware. It looks better than some PS4/X1 games.

Is this native 1080p 30fps docked?

900p@30FPS with some drops.

I think the worst framerate offender I got was when the camera closed up on Rabbid Peach while it had its shield active, the drop was very noticeable.

Most of the time the framerate is alright though.

Yeah some of the close-ups on status effects activating are kind of stuttery, along with random hitches here and there where the game locks up for a few seconds (although I haven't been able to attribute it to anything in particular and it's only happened twice).

The game is 1080p@30fps right?

Too bad the Switch won't capture full rez but it still looks amazing. Who'd have thought that tiny tablet could dish out PS4 quality Xbone quality graphics?

Edit: Nevermind, 900p only, well that seems to give them enough overhead.

I haven't had any hitches. Only a millisecond of slowdown once when Mario activated his overwatch (the aura, not the move). Otherwise it's been buttery smooth.

Playing a game that looks this good on basically a tablet is a bit surreal. I sometimes gotta do a double take.

This game is fire man.

You can almost feel the joy the artists at Ubisoft felt when they were told they were going to work on a Mario game by looking at this game. They went nuts with it.

Well the camera angle surely helps them in achieving that kind of graphical fidelity. They would have to tone down the graphics quite a bit if it where an open world game.

Then again... Mario Odyssey doesn't look that much worse and runs at 60 fps...

That moment when a Ubisoft game becomes a killer app and a reason to buy a Switch - a console from a company that was "doomed."

What a time to be alive.

Gotcha, still looks amazing. I'm gushing.

Odyssey is 720p docked so far so the IQ won't compare as favorably, I anticipate optimization to 900p though - at least I hope so.

Jumping from any portable game available, no matter how expensive the hardware is (aka this $1000 phones), to this specific game developed for the "cheap" switch's hardware that features just a humble tegra x1 from the year 2014, is just madness.

It just amazes me how good the results can be when developers really commit to craft something exclusively for a piece of hardware.

Continuing from where I left off, in World 2 — Sherbet Desert. I continue to be impressed by this game's use of environmental props, how it mixes familiar Mario iconography with super-sized items from the real world. It's strange, it's surreal, and it's oddly beautiful!

Also, pay close attention and you may notice several screens in sequence forming a pee joke... Amazing to see this stuff in a Mario game, lol:

Hey, thanks for the kind words. Knowing someone enjoys this stuff makes the long upload process all worthwhile. :)

I'm smitten with how handcrafted this game looks. I wonder how many unique objects were modeled for this game. Lots of assets!

i agree, a visually lovey game, but i think The other screenshot thread has it right, limits to 3 screenshots per post.

Then again... Mario Odyssey doesn't look that much worse and runs at 60 fps...

I think Odyssey looks significantly worse. Anti-aliasing, lighting and colors seem better in Mario + Rabbids. I always thought Odyssey looked like it could have been done on the Wii U, though who knows if they can get it up to 1080p before launch.

Rabbids is the best looking Switch game. I can't even grasp anyone thinking Oddyssey looks near this.

while I agree Rabbids graphics are really really good, I still think Odyssey looks a bit better.
The city looks really bland but there is i.e. stuff in Sand Kingdom not to be found in Rabbids.
espcially the lightning and other FXes

First, two more environmental shots from World 2 - Sherbet Desert, where I've now done all 10 challenges:

With that, time to dive into World 3 - Spooky Trails. I'll start with my arrival in town and my exploration of the ruins of a Taj Mahal-like palace:

I have to agree with this, surprisingly. I'm sure Nintendo micro-managed this to hell and back though, so I'm not giving Ubi too much credit.
Nah, I don't think it has to do with Nintendo micromanaging anything. Ubisoft just has incredible artists and animators who felt inspired working on this game. Another example is Rayman Legends, which has better art direction and animation than most Nintendo games.

It's frankly a bit tiring seeing people trying to deny Ubisoft any credit. I know it's alarming how this game is so Nintendo-like despite being developed and published by someone other than Nintendo, but it just goes to show that "Nintendo quality" is not limited to a group of developers in Japan; rather, it's a level of work ethic, imagination and craftsmanship that can be achieved by others as well, given the proper inspiration and motivation.

The passion in Mario + Rabbids is evident in every facet of the game. I continue to be absolutely floored by this game. :)

Now then, continuing with the screens from World 3, which feels increasingly like Mad Monster Mansion from Banjo-Kazooie (thanks in no small part to the wonderful music by Banjo-Kazooie's composer, Grant Kirkhope):
