When I remember 2007, it's going to be for how many great FPS games came out this year. 2008 seems to promise more variety.

I think so! I don't think I have had the pleasure of playing this many grate games in one year during any past console generation.

Yeah, it can have that title for a month.

2008: MGS4, DMC4, GT5, FFXIII (even if only in Japan), RE5 alongside new games like LBP, with more sequels like KZ2, Resistance 2, MotorStorm 2 and occasionally a Wipeout squeezed in, not to forget Team Ico Project and White Knight Chronicles, and obviously new Getaway and Infamous. And that's just one system.

2008 will be gaming bliss, seeing releases of at least 3 LEGENDARY games, this year had none of those.

As for the question this topic poses, I don't think we can judge now. I think in 3-4 years we can really start to judge the quality of this year's games versus those of for instance 2001.

2001 had Gran Turismo 3, Halo, GTA3, MGS2, DMC, Ico, TMB, Smash Bros, Silent Hill 2..etc..etc.

2004 had World of WarCraft, Halo 2, GTA San Andreas, MGS3, Half-life 2..etc..etc.

Don't have a full list, but some of the notable games are Grand Theft Auto 3, Halo, Super Smash Bros Melee, Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, and Devil May Cry.

EDIT: Ooh, Gran Turismo 3, forgot that one.

That's the thing about PC, so many beloved niche-ish (or at least not totally overhyped) titles. My contribution is Out of the Park Baseball 2007.

It was a good year; no doubt about that. I would say that it was a good year for shooter fans--especially with the release of Orange Box (the coupe de grace).

2001 releases (in North America): Halo: CE, Grand Theft Auto III, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Devil May Cry, Super Smash Bros. Melee, ICO, Max Payne, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X, + Xbox & GameCube launch etc. A poor year for PC games but really unbeatable as far as consoles are concerned.

For PC it's definitely 1998.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
A number of those game (360) shouldn't have made that list IMO.

Being an all-platform owner is BRUTAL and sympathy-meriting. I've had to skip SMG, COD4, Uncharted, Mass Effect, etc. just because I don't have the time and I still have an intimidating backlog.

No year is within a country mile of 1998. I would also still put 2001 and 2004 ahead of 2007. This year, IMO, has been about Bioshock. Halo 3 isn't as good as previous Halo's. Mass Effect is borderline broken in terms of gameplay although it has a compelling story and high production values. Super Mario Galaxy is great, but not as good as SM64 or most of the SNES Marios. Ratchet and Uncharted are great, but not in the pantheon of games.

2007 = pretty good year.

1998 = untouchable
