Announcing the Evo 2009 Lineup!
Posted by inkblot On February - 2 - 2009

It’s that time of year again. The Evo elves have been pounding away in our workshop, and we’re finally ready to reveal some details about this year’s tournament. Hit the jump for the skivvy!

Date and Venue

We’re back in Vegas, but have moved up the tournament date to mid-July. Hopefully this will make it a little easier on the folks who have school in the early fall. This year we are upgrading (ahem) the venue to the Rio Hotel and Casino. This is a great location that, while not directly on the strip, is still in the heart of Las Vegas.
The Games

This is what you really want to know, right? We’re thrilled to have fantastic new games like Street Fighter 4 to sink our teeth into. It does mean that we’ve had to retire some old friends, but we’ve tried to keep a mix between the old and the new on the roster. Here are your Evo games for 2009!

* Street Fighter 4
* Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix
* Soul Calibur 4
* Marvel vs. Capcom 2
* Guilty Gear XX, Accent Core
* SF3, Third Strike, 2v2 team tournament

As usual, we will hold exhibition events on Friday and Saturday night.

* Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Invitational Finals
* Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix 5 on 5 Regional Team Tournament

The TvC event will actually be the final 8 players of a 64 man invitational tournament that we will run before hand. The TvC finals will run just like any other Evo finals.
GameStop Street Fighter 4 National Tournament Tie-In

Evo has also partnered with GameStop in their national Street Fighter 4 tournament. The top 16 players in the GameStop tournament will receive and automatic placement in Evo’s semi-final bracker for Street Fighter 4. This should be a great event that will introduce tons of new players to street fighter tournament action.

Stay tuned over the new few weeks for more information about the specific tournaments, registration and hotel booking information, and other Evo announcements!

More info and updates will be at:

I know this year, more than ever... we're going to have fighting game fanboys/newcomers joining the fray of competitive fighting gaming... There is no better way to jump into the community/competitive spirit than by attending here.

Even if it is just to watch, you do NOT want to miss out!

I disagree.
Not living in America I wish they could setup some live streams of Evo this year. I would be more than willing to pay. :D

Glad Marvel is still in baby!

This year will be insane.

Are they really dropping Brawl? Was the boycott last year that successful?

I didn't think they'd readmit the Guilty Gear community.

No idea why Brawl isn't included but Guilty Gear community is HUGE.

Wow, no Tekken. Sad, but I think most people knew it was coming. I wonder if the TTT talk will lead to an unofficial tournament. At least Soul Calibur is there.

Accent Core? Is Accent Core Plus any different? Guess it doesn't matter.

No Brawl. Wow.

I guess it goes without saying, but both the STHDR tournamnents will be in Remix mode right?

TvC will be interesting.

This is a tournament for fighting games.

I would think so, if they were playing original mode they would call it super turbo and in the rules mention that it would be played on HDR on whichever system.

Oh wow, nice to see they included Soul Calibur 4! I really hope that game has legs (be interesting to see which set of rules they go with too).

No Blazblue or KoFXII is a bit =/

edit: wait no Tekken either?!

KOF XII probably won't be out by the time EVO is around.

No comment on BlazBlue.

But Tekken won't be out either. ;(

And we are NOT going back to DR.

Oichi: You're lucky you have the option of both! :p

Guess it was a non-fighting game tournament for the last two years with non-fighting games like smash bros, street fighter 3 third strike, and marvel vs capcom rite?

Street Fighter II, III and IV but no Tekken or Brawl?

Wow, SF sure seems to be popular with the competitive crowd. :lol

Firestorm dont bother. He's just an asshole who always says that. I'm sure MarkMan doesnt want his thread ruined with bickering. This wont be constructive.

Yeah, that sucks...but its not surprising. The genre is almost as bad as the rpg genre when it comes to growth and revolution, and most fans just want different variations of the same thing as opposed to something completely different. Ah well, its expected, so ill just watch all the vids of sf3&4 and say wow.

*goes back to practicing short back airs in brawl*

Oh I know. But yes I guess this thread should be spared that :lol

It's probably better that there is no Tekken here.

The newest console iteration is two games behind of what the rest of the world is playing. Won't be fun at all.

But hey... I'm sure there will be *some* Tekken going on ;)

What's the official non-fanboyish stance as to why neither Melee or Brawl are in this year's roster? Also, why bring back the Guilty Gear community? Was it banned only for a year as retaliation and was never permanent to begin with?

The GG fans apologized. Apparently the Smash fans and Evo didnt make up. Both were fine before they crossed each others paths and they will be fine after. And judging from responses in this thread and at large, its probably best Brawl isnt there

At least have a DIY BR tourney or something.

Soooooo.... Blazblue in Q2 09 ey??

Really? Is it because next year PS3 will get Blazblue?

I thought it was this year? I don't know why but STHDR and SC4 tournaments are also on PS3. It may because most people are moving up from PS2 sticks are getting new PS3 PCBs for their old sticks. OR maybe they are afraid of RROD during all the playing.

Well I mean for Evo next year. And that makes sense.

Color me surprised. I thought smash bros. brought a good amount of loot in.

I guess no Blazblue, since it's not out on consoles yet? Tekken makes sense, cause god knows namco is taking forever to get even the first version of 6 out.

Very sad about Tekken even though it's no surprise. God Namco has really screwed the American Tekken community.

If marvel has been at Evo for how many years now, why does it say...

Tournament Rules
Format: Evo Standard Format, Double Elimination
Console: TBA

when you look in the events section? Every other game has one set already...and it's been there for a while...

I smell drama that's worth getting into. Please elaborate? I don't mean to derail, but it sounds fascinating how entire communities are snubbed and embraced like they were business partners.
