12 Films To See In May (what are you watching?)

Not open for further replies.
Not sure what is coming out this month? Here is my rundown of my most anticipated films:

Original Feature

12. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (Levy, May 22nd)

museum2.jpg

Plot: Security guard Larry Daley (Stiller) infiltrates the Smithsonian Institute in order to rescue Jedediah (Wilson) and Octavius (Coogan), who have been shipped to the museum by mistake.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: The original was surprisingly entertaining, and this sequel seems to be more of the same. We have a great cast as Amy Adams, Steve Coogan, Bill Hader, and Christopher Guest join Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, and Ricky Gervais for this ‘Night’.

11. Departures (Takita, May 29th)

departures-500x333.jpg

Plot: A newly unemployed cellist takes a job preparing the dead for funerals.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: It upset Waltz With Bashir and The Class to win best Foreign film at the Oscars this year.

10. Rudo y Cursi (Cuaron, May 8th)

rudo_y_cursi-500x250.jpg

Plot: Two siblings rival each other inside the world of professional soccer.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Produced by Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro and written and directed by Carlos Cuarón. Also starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. With all this star power, I'm looking forward to something special.

9. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Hood, May 1st)

x-men-origins-wolverine-movie-500x246.jpg

Plot: Wolverine lives a mutant life, seeks revenge against Victor Creed (who will later become Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend, and ultimately ends up going through the mutant Weapon X program.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Kicks off the summer blockbuster line-up. Hugh Jackman should be entertaining as always. Ryan Reynolds, Liev Schreiber, and Dominic Monaghan should all prove to be worthy adversaries.

8. The Limits of Control (Jarmusch, May 1st)

limits-control2.jpg

Plot: The story of a mysterious loner, a stranger in the process of completing a criminal job.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Early reviews have been negative, but looking forward to Jarmusch's next project. Gael Garcia Bernal and Tilda Swinton join Bill Murray for this outing.

7. Angels & Demons (Howard, May 15th)

angels-and-demons-500x333.jpg

Plot: Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon works to solve a murder and prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Despite really disliking Da Vinci Code, this addition looks to be much more exciting. Hopefully Ewan McGregor can add the much needed spark.

6. The Girlfriend Experience (Soderbergh, May 22nd)

2009_the_girlfriend_experience_002-500x204.jpg

Plot: A drama set in the days leading up to the 2008 Presidential election, and centered on a high-end Manhattan call girl meeting the challenges of her boyfriend, her clients, and her work.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: A porn star attempts acting and Soderbergh captures the incoherent narrative in his own style.

5. Drag Me to Hell (Raimi, May 29th)

drag_me_to_hell_choke2.jpg

Plot: A loan officer ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, which turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Raimi returns to what he does best.

4. Terminator Salvation (McG, May 22nd)

terminator-salvation-580x324-499x279.jpg

Plot: After Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust, a group of survivors led by John Connor (Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: I hope McG (We Are Marshall, Charlie’s Angels) gets it right with this new addition to the Terminator franchise. Christian Bale should be more than enough reason to see the movie.

3. The Brothers Bloom (Johnson, May 15th)

the_brothers_bloom_movie_image_adrian_brody__mark_ruffalo_and_rachel_weisz-500x333.jpg

Plot: The Brothers Bloom are the best con men in the world, swindling millionaires with complex scenarios of lust and intrigue. Now they’ve decided to take on one last job - showing a beautiful and eccentric heiress the time of her life with a romantic adventure that takes them around the world.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: After getting pushed back from this Oscar season Rian Johnson’s (Brick) indie comedy-drama featuring Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo is finally arriving. I loved Brick so I can’t wait to see this.

2. Up (Docter, May 29th)

up-500x282.jpg

Plot: By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: It’s Pixar. Let’s see if they have another classic after Wall-E. All signs point to yes.

1. Star Trek (Abrams, May 8th)

startrektrailercap5-500x208.jpg

Plot: A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Hell Yes. I’m no Star Trek fan by any means but after Cloverfield, Lost, and Mission Impossible 3 I have 100 percent faith in J.J. Abrams. The film is supposedly going to set Star Trek in a plausible futuristic world so I can’t wait.

Avoid:

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (Waters, May 1st)

ghost_of_girlfriends_past_still_3.jpg

Plot: At his younger brother's wedding, a committed bachelor/womanizer (McConaughey) is haunted by his romantic past.

Trailer

Why You Should Stay Far Away: Here is McConaughey's yearly moneygrab. Let's see how bad it can fail this time.

Dance Flick (Wayans, May 22nd)

dance-flick-head-500x331.jpg

Plot: Street dancer Thomas Uncles is from the wrong side of the tracks, but his bond with the beautiful Megan White might help the duo realize their dreams as the enter in the mother of all dance battles.

Trailer

Why You Should Stay Far Away: "Brought to you by the team behind White Chicks and Little Man".

I saw Battle for Terra on Saturday and it is a really good movie. It's about a group of aliens who gets invaded. That's all you need to know.

Yep!

Cloverfield Easter Egg Spotted in Star Trek Super Bowl Ad

tagruato1-440x186.jpg

Our friend Felipe from CSTSE points out that Tagruato, the evil Japanese corporation from the Cloverfield viral campaign, has a cameo in JJ Abrams‘ Star Trek. A skyscraper in a futuristic San Francisco (home to Starfleet Academy) features the Tagruato logo. A cool little Easter egg. Knowing Abrams, Star Trek is bound to be full of little nods like this to Abrams’ other films and Trek history.

Nice!

I have been waiting for the brothers bloom since 2007, hope it was worth the wait. looking forward to salvation despite McG. Star Trek reviews are starting to win me over after initial sceptism

Yeah I left that off along with Management, Next Day Air, Easy Virtue, and a few others. Very indifferent towards them.

Came in here to say that I plan to see nothing, but I guess I'm interested in about half that list. More into Terminator than Star Trek, though I had no idea Jarmusch had a new movie coming out so that's my automatic #1.

Probably. There were references to Lost in Cloverfield and MI3.
What were the Lost references in Cloverfield?

Going to see Up this Thursday. So excited. :D

Would it be too soon for me to start the official thread when I get back? Say, a week from today?

As far as the rest of the month goes, will probably see Star Trek, Terminator, the Brothers Bloom, the Limits of Control (assuming I can actually find a theatre showing it around here) and Departures. (Ditto)

I saw Brother Bloom a week or so ago at IFF Boston. It was very good. Bang Bang is great!

Like a reference as in continuity? Or just fun for the fans kind of thing?

Just easter egg stuff. The Hanso Foundation was listed in the credits for MI3 and I think the Dharma logo was in Cloverfield.

For those not following the ST movie thread, Tomato-meter for ST is up to 22/22.

So awesome. Can't freaking wait. Interested to see the first negative review
if we get one

Rudo y Cursi it's a fun flick that kinda loses it when it requires more than just good acting to support its narrative.

Drag Me To Hell, Brothers Bloom and The Girlfriend Experience are the only ones I'm interested in.

Has Carlos borrowed any techniques from his brother or does he have his own style? Children of Men is may favorite film of the last 5 years or so..

Saw Trek... skipping Wolverine until BRD or until I can see it on the cheap. Capone is putting on an Up screening so I'll defo see that. He said there will be a few others in May so I guess we'll find out in the coming weeks.

Oh yeah, I'll go to T4 for sure, regardless of whether I can go for free.

Cosmic Bus

I wish Departures was getting a bigger release. Even the HK DVD that's coming out at the end of the month appears to be missing English subs. :(

as opposed to past star treks?
Yeah, I wouldn't go so far as calling it "a plausible futuristic world," as it's not that much different in that regard to other STs. The new movie's definitely a lot more accessible to non-fans though.

May amazingly is the peak of the summer movie season this year. It all goes downhill after this.

Aside from what looks to be a few stellar films, I have to agree. This month is amazing.
