Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2014 (Feb 10 - Feb 16)

Has there been any reports on preorder numbers or general Japanese interest in the PS4?

I know Somy said that it sold out quickly when online retailers opened for preorders some months ago, but have we heard anything since then?

I believe we heard 3.5 times the stock allocated to retailers as was the case for the PS3 [think that was 82K or something?] so around 287K

And then there was something about intial stock being pre-ordered at a high percentage

What do you mean by 'If'?, it will, theres no other way around it, it's bundle with every single PS4 lol

Sony is just doing the right thing. Ensuring every Japanese PS4 owner enjoys the wonderful world that is knackdom

Please tell me you forgot to quote the list for March. And isn't Sonic Transformed already available on Wii U?

The PS4 launch in Japan should be pretty telling. If it fails to be a success, I think it'll be safe to say Japan is out of the console game. I still believe it'll do very well, and outsell the PS3 LTD, but who knows. Truly a wildcard.

As for the Wii U, I'll wait till Mario Kart, if that can't help, nothing can.

I think I'm a sadist. I'm happy because everything from my favorite game company by far is bombing hard. XD
I really hope they learn something from it and stop being so arrogant.

To everyone crying install base, check out Pikmin 3's first week numbers from Week 28, 2013 (Jul 08 - Jul 14) :

01./00. [WIU] Pikmin 3 <ACT> (Nintendo) {2013.07.13} (¥5.985) - 92.720 / NEW <48,45%>

Wii U sales jumped from 8251 to 22,199.

Yeah.

People just don't want another fucking Donkey Kong that looks like the Donkey Kong they already have for their Wii or 3DS. They certainly aren't buying a new system for one.

I think it would be unfair to declare home consoles dead in Japan only from PS4 launch sales numbers. The launch games lineup is too weak to make it a must have for now, and I don't think that the Japanese are the kind who would buy a console without games.

I've given up on that hope. Brain Training 3D and Wii Fit U were dead on arrival, yet their answer is a 10 year plan for a new platform that features nothing but that sort of shit lol.
The current leadership has reached a level of lunacy which wouldn't even be stopped if no one but Iwata himself and his mother were still buying his products and others tried to drag him out of his office.

I have something important to tell you Iwata

All those copies of those odd little games you've been making that your mother's supposedly been buying?

Yeah they were actually just bought up by Nintendo to make you feel better. Your mother is a Vita fan :'(

Which is why they aren't doing themselves any favors.

Yeah, I'm getting to that point too. I had certain expectations from the briefing last month and Nintendo went in the complete OPPOSITE direction of what I expected. In other words, the same exact path they've been on for years and years, and why the Wii U has been such a failure in the first place.

Focus more on the gamepad? ugh.

500k would be level of success similar to USA and Europe. Basically same as Vita, which was handheld sold over holidays.

Since nothing can save Wii U why should Nintendo bother? They know it's a lost case and slowly but steady are moving away from it.

Best thing they can do right now is focus on 3DS for the next 2-3 years of its life and get ready for next handheld since things will be much more difficult at next generation for dedicated game machines. MH4U coming so soon after MH4 might be a step to that direction and I'm not so sure anymore there will be a big (if there is at all) period for SSB launches between 3DS and Wii U versions.

If Nintendo plays cards right Smash could be the answer to last year's Pokemon.

If I remember correctly, it is NOT bundled in every single PS4.
The bundle is limited.

edit.

Sony has revealed two limited edition PlayStation 4 bundles scheduled for the Japanese market. The PlayStation 4 will launch several months later in Japan, on February 22, 2014, and will be available in the standard edition and two “First Limited Packs”, as they’re called.

The bundles include a PlayStation 4 console (of course) and a copy of Knack. One of the bundles also includes the PlayStation Camera, while the other doesn’t. Both bundles also feature an extended warranty. The bundles will be priced at 43,980 Yen (with Camera) and 39.980 Yen (no camera). This translates to roughly $440 and $400, respectively.

Sony recently revealed a $500 PlayStation 4 bundle for the US and Europe, which includes a copy of Killzone Shadow Fall, an extra controller, and the PlayStation Camera.

I've said it maybe a million times since the announcement, but even if you really liked the Donkey Kong announcement, it was a confusing strategic decision. Nintendo did not need to fill in the gaps in its software with yet another colorful platformer, they could have done that later if the system came back to life. Instead, they wasted one of their primary western advantages on going down a road that was just reinforcing the same strengths the Wii U already had, and the market already rejected.

If this doesn't make it obvious, nothing will

Its going to be interesting as hell to see how Smash Bros 3ds sells considering probably next to no one will be buying the wii u version. Will Smash benefit from portable, local multiplayer and sell like crazy?

Yeah, that would've saved the console...

No, but it would have added some much needed diversity to the line up. DKC is going to appeal to the exact same crowd that already picked up a Wii U for Mario 3D World. It's really not the game the Wii U needs right now.

Now in English:

Shipments currently total 4.1 million units and sell-through is also high. We just announced our latest title, "Monster Hunter 4G", which we plan to start selling in the fall of this year. Since the transfer of data from "Monster Hunter 4" is mostly possible, we will continue to use events and other measures to raise awareness of these titles and focus on increasing repeat sales.

Kuroko's Basketball 3DS - 92pt (final)

Harvest Moon New Beginning 3DS - 62pt (final) [79,809 FW / 232,912 LTD]
Harvest Moon New World 3DS - 64pt (increasing, to be released on Feb 27)

So, the 3DS is down 46% in hardware Y/Y.
Vita is up, but over a very poor early 2013.
The Wii U is the Wii U.
Microsoft is irrelevant in Japan.
Sony's other platforms are aged.
And I'm not currently optimistic about post-launch PS4 prospects.

Not sure if we have any update on the state of overall software sales.

How does this bode for Japanese publishers/developers that primarily make their bread and butter in the domestic market? Do they look West-ward, or do they look mobile, or both, or Keep Calm and Carry On?

Not actually that important

This. Platformers are and were the last thing missing from the console, WiiU's without a doubt the premium console for that genre already, at the time they even had Rayman as an exclusive, and yet the decided to "waste" the resources of the only in-house dev actually capable of filling the needs of the market they were supposedly chasing. DK would have made the perfect Xmas 2015 game. The original release date was even more idiotic and really makes you question what the hell were they thinking, launching together with Sonic in October, a month after Legends and with Mario coming just a month later. Appalling forward thinking to say the least, I mean we can analyze strategies and make our armchair judgment call, but here it's more like "What the hell, why would they do that?! " than "I feel that's a big mistake, we'll see".

Probably a little of everything, it'll be very transitional.

-Big pubs will probably try a few more Western AAA games.
-Some will go (more) mobile
-Some will ride the PS3 past its welcome
-Many might start doubling down on 3DS. Hardware saturation might have set in but software seems to be doing fine all the same. So unless there's another hardware shakeup I don't expect the status quo to change.

Yeah, it's pretty mindblowing that they decided to make another Donkey Kong game. The only explanation is that the original Donkey Kong Country Returns sold very well. It makes Nintendo-sense, or something... Didn't Iwata say that they need to get kids interested? Maybe they thought DK is the solution! Makes sense... right?

Bayonetta 2 is gonna be the biggest bomb of our time... Holy shit. The game wouldn't exist at all without Nintendo, though.

So... Wii U is still sold at loss? How? Yeah, the GamePad is 80€ or something, but the hardware is very weak and PS4 sells at a really small loss for 400€. Price drop probably wouldn't help (if not something insane like 99€ or 150€) at all, so whatever, I suppose...
