NeoGAF's Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2014

My eight votes were:
1. Dark Souls 2 : The souls franchise has become one of my absolute favorite franchises ever. I cannot wait to jump into DSII. Dual wielding is finally viable! Now i can be the crazy berserker I always wanted to be in a souls game. I shall name him YOLOSoul. I am really looking forward to discovering the details of the story as well. I'm hoping for a prequel :D

2. Wildstar : Everything I see about this game makes me excited. I love the humor, I love the art, I love the combat system and I love the pathing system. I cannot wait to jump in and play as a maniacal spellslinging cowboy gremlin

3. Dragon Age Inquisition : My heart wants to believe this is the sequel Origins deserved. The thought of playing as a Qunari makes me squee with anticipation and joy.

4. Order 1886 : Mustache porn + Victorian England + Tesla weapons = Sold

5. Uncharted 4 - In my heart of hearts I hope for a Sully Uncharted. Make me happy ND: give me pirates and epic mustaches.

6. Destiny : I was never a huge fan of Halo but I have probably sank more time in Borderlands than any other game this console generation so anything that borrows fromt hat formula has me excited. The sci-fi is just icing on the cake. I've been itching for a good SciFi rpg since Deus Ex: HR

7. Rime : If I knew nothing about this game but the screenshots that were shown this would still be among my most anticipated games of the year. The art in this game is frankly captivating. It will be mine.

8. Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes : Red Dead Redemption + Mullets + Kojima = OMFG SO MUCH WIN

So my #1, #4, #6, and #8 made it in the GAF list!

I admit perhaps putting Dragon Age so high on my list was folly but everything I've seen and read about it so far really makes me want to believe it is going to be great. Bioware has let me down before though (DA2, SWTOR) so I'm trying to remain skeptical but I have to admit its hard

Glad to see the excitement for Dark Souls 2 and The Order: 1886 but I can't help but feel disappointed in the complete lack of hype for Wildstar. :( It's like Firefly meets WoW and it looks awesome. I can't wait for it. I really hope it does well. If you are a fan of MMOs and haven't heard of Wildstar I highly recommend checking it out.

@RexNovis - In the last game on your list, MGSV Ground Zeroes - you mentioned Red Dead Redemption. If you're referring to that horse-riding bit in the E3 trailer, then you should know that it's not this game.

The game on your list is just the prologue. The main game, MGSV: The Phantom Pain, has no release date yet.

Considering the large number of Platinum fans on NeoGAF, it's disappointing to see Bayonetta 2 at #11.

I guess most fans still can't get over the fact it's WiiU exclusive

Trails in the Sky SC didn't. :(

Though that's also a sequel to a game that only came here on PSP in what was more or less its sunset year, once it hits PC more people will probably start to seriously pay attention whether or not it's enough to get it to place in a list like this.
Makes me sad. Although its omission despite the inclusion of countless other JRPGs clearly means people haven't raved enough about Trails in the Sky and the Kiseki series as a whole.

With The Witcher 3 dominating this list in such fashion, I'm thinking that Witcher 2 should be the next game I pluck off of my backlog pile and dive into once I've wrapped up my current Last of Us playthrough.

heh, the games I'm most excited about are in the bottom half of the list (can't wait for LoS2!!). Not that I ain't excited for the other ones... just not as much I guess. Still, good list. Looking forward to great year =D

What is with all the Dark Souls hate?!?

I played The Witcher 2 and Dark Souls is what's so funny. The games are so far apart in quality they shouldn't be that close to eachother, let alone with Witcher on top. Maybe if Dark Souls 2 was PS4/XB1/PC.... goddamn you Japanese developers lagging behind on tech.

[
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to play it myself, but if I had to pick one game that was gassed up to great heights, Dark Souls is that pick.

Pretty pics.

lmao @ Dark Souls 2 being so high.

The Witcher 3 is way more exciting than dark souls.

Its the first true next gen RPG and it looks to be ground breaking.

DarkSouls 2 is just more of the same in all honesty.

Videogmaes are about more than just high resolution textures and "dat grafx". A video game is a sum of it's parts not just a pretty picture to look at. The souls franchise was a REVOLUTION in game design. It is arguably the single greatest achivement in level and gameplay design in the last 10 years. The way the environment and sound design informs the player of the dangers lurking ahead while giving just enough information to still be mysterious, the way that multiplayer was designed to capitalize on the benevelonce (or malevolence) of the community, the seemingly simple combat that proves both unforgiving and difficult to master, expository story telling via the world itself (architecture, art, items), the creation of a psuedo-checkpoint system that doesnt suck, the ingenious use of shortcuts and pathing, and most importantly the ability to induce that intoxicating euphoric feeling of success against all odds; each of these is impressive on their own but in concert they are a masterpeice. Anyone who denies the design genious behind the Souls games, whether or not the games themselves appeal to you personally, loses all crediblity and respect in my eyes. There have been game design thesis written about the brilliance of design in the Souls franchise. I would encourage you all to think twice about diminishing one of the best examples of video game design in decades.

I would argue of all the games on that list Dark Souls 2 is the most deserving of it's spot. Sure there are a lot of great games to be excited about up there but, barring a few that little is known about, few are likely to reinvent concepts or epitomize design the way the souls franchise has. Even if DS2 is "just more of the same" that would just make me even more excited to relive some of the most compelling gameplay I have ever had the pleasure to experience. /end rant

Man, so many good games coming out this year. Unfortunately I have a huge backlog which will prevent me from buying many. Worst part is when I have a huge backlog the only games I can convince myself to buy are multiplayer FPS' that I will play with my buddies. Destiny sure has me hyped though....If it comes to PC it may be the only game I buy this year.

Woot, my comment somehow made it into the op! :D

Great list, March is gonna wreak so much havoc on my wallet (and grades). inFamous, Destiny Beta, MGSV:GZ, Titanfall, Dark Souls II, South Park (lol), FFX/X-2 HD. Not to mention Watch Dogs and Driveclub are slated for Spring releases (probably April, but could be close to March). 2014 is gonna be great.

I'm surprised The Order made the top 10, considering we know pretty much nothing about it and it's from a developer that has only made handheld games.

Boy oh Boy did Watch Dogs really drop off peoples radar, looks like they announced it way to early and were over shadowed by everything else.

There was a Game Informer with it just recently, we have no gameplay footage really but we know plenty

Agree and disagree with this statement. It is true that Ubisoft's marketing did drop off their marketing campaign for the game, but they anticipated that the game would be released 2013 Holiday season. I think they will once again revamp the hype with more marketing as we get closer to release window.

Also agree that Ubisoft showed way too much footage at E3 2012 and E3 2013 which caused mixed reactions and consequently a drop in people's opinion of the game. They should learn from CD PR, only showed minimalist gameplay footage and only some trailers, yet anyone who is an RPG fan is hyped up for the game.

I still can't wait for WD though...

Well, I won't speak for others by myself. There are quite a few reasons (many of which can be read here).

I'm very, very intrigued by the setting and direction of the game: a steampunk London in the Victorian era, with a group of seemingly badass knights of an ancient order with unique weaponry.

Beautiful graphics (an engine which RAD has been working on for the better part of a decade), gameplay described as reminiscent of Gears on steroids, highly destructible objects and environments, and made by a team that's made some fine, fine games in the past. Even without seeing much, the potential has me very excited, and that's what's boosted it fairly high on my anticipation scale.

We raved plenty about Trails in the Sky, at this point it's about accessibility to play the game. Thus me expecting Steam to make the most difference.

Well, I've seen a few Game Informer cover stories turn out different in the final product, and The Order only went into graphics, some story, and two guns iirc. Not exactly plenty when it comes to the actual game, which is sort of important when you consider the angle antitrop is looking from. Even though things can change between footage and final release (Bioshock Infinite), seeing some gameplay to gauge what is the actual game and what are just promises/projections is a safer bet.

With that said, I'm very excited to see The Order, and probably would have been in the top 3-5. Good year for games, and we're sure to hear of more in the near future.

What is with all the Dark Souls hate?!?

People are allowed to dislike, or be neutral towards, Dark Souls. Personally I have yet to hear a single thing that would endear me towards it. I had this discussion with someone else, but the game looked visually uninteresting to me. It really seems like the primary draw is it gives difficulty junkies something to play. (Secondary draw is that it gives people something to point to when they want to say "all the AAAAAAAA games suck, why can't they be more like this?) A lot of people on GAF seem to love it. That's fantastic. But that doesn't mean other people aren't allowed to NOT love it.

Honestly I would've let this go, but you got downright indignant and started quoting the few people who weren't that interested. This would be mildly amusing if Dark Souls didn't place at number fucking TWO. That wasn't good enough. Apparently every one must bow and worship at the altar of From Software. C'mon guy. We can be better than this.

And that goes to the rest of you who "can't believe" this or that game made the list. Shinobi constructed this from votes of people you converse with daily. There wasn't some "mystical council of editors" like on a gaming news site. He asked the question, collected the votes. A lot of us don't give a fuck about Titanfall, or whatever game it is you thought should've placed. And a lot of us DO care about Nintendo games, even if inexplicably there was some guy who was convinced Smash and X would be garbage, apropos of nothing.

Now yes, the Top 10 is extraordinarily skewed in my favor. 6/10 slots are games that I personally hope to own before the year is out (X, The Witcher 3, Smash Bros., The Order 1886, Destiny, and inFamous: Second Son)--but the list falls apart for me after that, with only 5 more games (7 max) that I'm even remotely interested in out of 30 titles. But that doesn't suddenly mean I'm going to say "Oh this list is terrible". If everyone's top 10 list were the same there'd be no point FOR a list.

There's "Well, this list doesn't really look like mine" and then there's "Why isn't your opinion like mine?", and what a lot of people are doing falls into the latter. One's a statement of facts, one's condescension.

Legendary combat, legendary level design, legendary boss encouters (for the most part), legendary atmosphere, legendary online play.

The Witcher 2 has a pair of legendary tits and um

The only real problem with the Witcher 2, apart from the story losing a bit of its power by act 3 (probably due to the way I played), is that it is a bit imbalanced. Mainly in combat. All the parts don't work perfectly. That makes it all the more amazing that the game is still so good overall and feels so damn convincing.

At its best, the Witcher 2 has some of the most convincing writing I have ever seen in a game (that first act in Flotsam was magnificent). It has a fantastic approach to spells, crafting, potion consumption and combat. For instance, potions you take are basically toxic brews which have to be taken while meditating. The more you combine them, the more extra effects/abilities you get, but the greater the side effects as well. The idea at least behind the signs system is fantastic (if somewhat broken in practice). It has a very good approach to multiple branching stories. At all times, with the exception of Dandelion, the characters are pitch perfect and FAR better than ANY game I have yet experienced. All the characters, be they elf, human or dwarf, feel incredibly real. The minute you meet them you instantly buy that they are real people. Also, the way the game handles romantic relationships (based on what I saw) is peerless in my gaming experience. Heck, my only problem with Dandelion is his ridiculous, out of place accent. He eventually grows on you. With the exception of Letho, it is hard to pinpoint who exactly is a villain when you first meet them. The game is rich. Lots of potions, weapons and items to craft. The two weapons system is excellent little touch (one steel sword for humans, and one silver sword for monsters - having to pay attention to which you are using).

I haven't played Dark Souls but from what I can tell the game world is all dark, all moody, all the time. The Witcher 2 is actually quite colorful (in a run down kind of way) but still manages to come across as adult and sophisticated.

"Above Average?" "Legendary tits?" Talk about oversimplifying.

No.

Without doubt, while not perfect, it is clear to anyone with working eyes that the Witcher 2 is a class act.

Dark Souls maybe the best, most challenging dungeon crawler of all time, but if I am looking for something else, that doesn't mean much (same applies to the Witcher 2)

In any case, given how good the Witcher 2 is, it hardly seems like a robbery to claim that its much better sequel could possibly be the most exciting game coming out.

Let's look at it.

The greatest strength of the Witcher 3 so far, based on what I have seen, is how strikingly convincing it is at... everything. The animations in particular are so good that Naughty Dog must be having nightmares. Be it an enemy being struck mid air, a pack of wolves snarling and bracing to attack or blasting enemies with that shockwave attack, everything acts and reacts amazingly well. Combine that with the terribly good graphics, seemingly sublime physics and the tight writing we have seen so far and the game just looks right.

But there's more. The game has now gone open world and claims to have a wide variety of endings (which given their love for branching stories in the last game seems entirely possible).

And combat just looks 'right.' Maybe it's the animations but my goodness does the combat look sexy. Watching him smash those banshee things in the original trailer and watching them get flung around realistically, animations and physics working in harmony is amazing. Or striking a guy with his sword watching that same guy stumble and and try to right himself only to get blown back by impact of the the shockwave sign (i.e spell), his body being moved by its intended motion coming into conflict with force of the attack. The targeting system seems much improved though I still need to see more.

And then there's how most everyone I have come across who saw the 20 (or was it 30) minute demo at E3 seems ridiculously excited.

This game hardly put a foot wrong since we saw the first trailer, and where it has put its feet right, it's dancing like Fred Astaire.

So yes, this game is worthy of the title of most anticipated going by the strength of what we have seen so far (as are likely, quite a few other games).

Odd bump, but I agree with all your points. The racism in the game really threw me for a loop. Elves/dwarves live in the ghetto and outskirts of areas, people all have jobs. They hang around camp fires and tell stories, go to taverns and drink. The world is just incredibly believable and realized. TW3 should be fantastic.

Alternately, I played through Dark Souls twice and don't even know if it had a story. It was just really fun and challenging with great art.

I also don't really see why TW2 is such a big deal, tried to play it a couple of times but always stopped after 5 or so hours, but open world alone makes me excited about TW3. Didn't actually know it was open world before this thread lol.

Ah the Witcher 2 is EXACTLY like that. The first time I played it, I found it to be a huge hastle. Once, it was time to fight the Kayran I gave up (partly due to fear).

However, almost a year later I picked it up again and when I got over the initial difficulty hump, I found it a lot of fun. I played it on easy mind you, and after the initial difficulty spike it became far too easy. Next time I play (if I play the pain in the ass game again) I'll definitely try on Normal.

The writing quality is consistently excellent, but it lost some of its ability to hold my attention as it went along, likely due to me reverting to 'nice guy' mode as I do in Mass Effect as well as rushing much of the third act. The extremely diverging story later on might be part of it too.

If this is seriously the top 10, 2014 is going to be a shitty year for video games. Half that list is third person shooter lol.

There is only one TPS in that list, man!

Besides, a genre says nothing about the quality of the game. Also, we already know there will be a ton of variety this year. Look at the amout of RPG's on the way for example, and in the space of a little over a month we get games ranging from Donkey Kong to Ground Zeroes to Dark Souls II to Titanfall to Infamous. Not bad. And the year is already off to a good start with games like The Last of Us: Left Behind and TxK. Also, Bayonetta 2.

2014 will be vintage.

3 of them are TPS, 2 of them are FPS, I wouldn't call that variety. I'm not trying to imply that them simply being labeld third person shooters and first person shooters is in any way negative, but I've seen gameplay for Infamous SS, Destiny, Titanfall, and The Order 1866 and they are most certainly generic.

Vintage? Literally almost nothing on that entire list is going to be original or set to be classic. There are plenty of games that look like they are going to pretty amazing probably, like the new smash, the new bayonetta, X, and The Witcher, but the overwhelming majority of that list looks pretty bad to me,

The Witcher 3 - RPG
Dark Souls 2 - RPG
Destiny - FPS
inFamous - Open world
Smash Bros - Fighting
X - RPG
The Order - TPS
Persona 5 - RPG
Titanfall - FPS
MGSV - Stealth/action

Dark Souls - ARPG
Destiny - FPS
inFamous - TPS (you don't get a gun but you constantly shoot from the third person, the gameplay is almost identical to a lot of TPS games.
Smash - Fighting
The Order - QTE fest TPS movie game
Titanfall - Call of Duty FPS almost identically
MGSV - this one is stretching it a bit since metal gear is stealth/action, but there is quite a bit of TPS.

The gameplay for a lot of the games on that list is startling similar to me

South Park probably would have been higher if they had shown that 13 minute video earlier.

I'm sure that sold a lot of people on the game.

It actually turned me off the game personally, I was really interested in the game, and am a huge South Park Fan, but the amount of constant button prompts in that game bother the hell out of me. "Press A to combat, wait NO PRESS B PRESS B, cuscene, cutscene, cutscene." I don't personally know what they could have done with it, but I feel like they could have done so much more with the gameplay. The scripted scenes look to be pretty awesome though.

That's too bad. But that's also, like, your opinion, man.

lol

Do you mind listing a lot of the TPS games that have almost identical gameplay with Infamous? I like those games a lot and would like to play more of them.

Infamous is an open world suphero game, it's not a TPS. The gameplay is pretty similar to a lot of third person shooters? Please point me towards all those TPS in which I'm smoke dashing through the air and running up the side of buildings. MGS certainly isn't a TPS, you can probably complete Ground Zeroes without firing once.

Anyway, if half of the top ten is TPS you either don't know what a third person shooter is, or you can't count. Probably both. Also, playing a FPS is certainly not the same a TPS. As if playing The Order will be anything like playing Titanfall.

If you ignore the animations that happen when you fire your spells, and ignore the animations inbetween and following the death of your enemy, it is almost identical to almost all Third person shooters I have ever played pretty much. It may look like I'm just spewing hate here, but I used to be a dedicated Playstation fan, by extrension I own most of the exclusives for PS3, including inFamous, I beat it 100% twice, and despite a few spells you can throw that are completely out of the oridinary in video games, which there is very few of, I can't think of any off the top of my head, pretty much all the combat in that game was generic TPS. Point at target in third person, align crosshair, shoot fireball. There is your gun in most TPS games. Jump in the air and slam into the ground creating small radius explosion, there is your grenade that is in most TPS games, lean up close to enemy and mash X as fast as possible to drain their power, QTEs in third person shooters are pretty damn common. I will give the game that it does have some interesting graphical effects, and skating on rails is pretty interesting, and if you're really into graphics and atmosphere over gameplay you probably would find it great, but I, being someone who prioritizes gameplay over anything, got quite bored with that game. There's even a couple scenes in that game where your only logical option is to fire extremely precise bolts of lightning from long range at military targets, which is as TPS as TPS gets imo.

I'm looking for recommendations here.
