Harmonix/Hidden Path announce Chroma (Music Based F2P MP FPS), alpha signup [Trailer]

Dubstep gun..well i did play with it in Saints Row 4. Will wait and see i mean looks like another dev is taking also the FPS direction. I mean why?

I love the idea but that trailer and those screenshots are... not really what I was hoping for. Considering Harmonix's pedigree I was hoping the music choice would be something a little more interesting (and that's not really a knock against dubstep as a whole, just... that poppy WOBBLEBASS ~meaningful piano~ THE CRACKS BEGINNNN TO SHOOOOOW rubbish). I guess I'll watch the stream and see how it actually shakes out.

Flippin fantastic, this sounds so much fun. Fresh twist on a arguably stale genre. Good stuff, really want to try this out

Ah, I didn't realise it was class-based. I was hoping for a bizarre twist on Q3/UT, not TF2. Nonetheless, I've already signed up for the alpha so if I happen to get a key I'll probably give the game a whirl.

Concept wise, I'm in. All the music stuff sounds cool, especially for the price of free.

But the big thing I'm worried about is harmonix's ability to make a good playing shooter. That'll make or break it, because if I'm going to be doing rhythm/music based stuff, it really needs to feel tight and responsive.

wow you need a GTX 670 or higher for alpha? What the hell...

I don't think it's that hard to believe. By the very nature of an alpha, preparing their game for a multitude of different machines is not really necessary just yet, so recommended settings like that are fine

Looks cool. I can see mechanics where shots do much more damage if they're timed correctly, maybe you choose a song and during parts like bridges or verses they give you different bonuses, etc.

Its funny because when I saw the hint earlier this is exactly what I thought would be announced. Something completely off the wall.

I don't even...

It's interesting in a sense that it's something new but rationally I can't conceive how this will be a good game at all.

I kind of lost interest in supporting this company after they fired/laid off tons of people, and pretty much let Rock Band 3 rot out of the gate.

Just not feeling it. Really need to see more footage of how a shooting game links to the music and it not be an average shooter mashed into an average music game.

Well, i love Harmonix and i hope it works, althou personally i'm not particularly excited.

I'll trade my soul for RB4 please!!!

I dunno, I played rock band blitz...

Game was a fantastic pick up and play game that unfortunately did not bode well for them sales wise (seriously gamers wtf). I can understand that the money system they had put in place was not for everyone but I always had way more than enough credits (this is without the challenges), but then again I do have a lot of downloadable songs.

Hmm, I haven't really played many arena shooters with a class system, but I'm still very excited. It's a really interesting concept.

Harmonix, I know you're reading this. Throw some death metal in there please!

Looks neat, but I can imagine getting really sick of the same wubstep beats over and over again. It really needs to have some generative, evolving element to keep it fresh.

Both the PC Gamer article and the Twitch stream they just did say the game won't just be dubstep/electronic and that the "drop" is not representative of the game's full soundtrack. So good news!

Surprised more people aren't talking about this - sounds really interesting and creative. Love the design on the characters too, particularly the dude with the starry chest.

Signed up for the Alpha.

EDIT: GIFs, because I like this pretty trailer.

I'm imaging pre-ww1 combat techniques based on formation and rows.
But the whole team is contributing to an overall song/beat.

Because, as we all know, layoffs never happen at gaming development studios - and when they do happen, it's only because evil people enjoy seeing people suffer and lose their jobs. And supporting a game with a number of patches and weekly DLC for three and a half years is letting a game rot out of the gate.

Okay.

Hot damn, people are still making arena shooters. This is relevant to my interests. Really curious to see how music will impact the gameplay. Plus I can't say no to more weaponized dubstep.

It would also be nice if there was level destruction like the cinematic but I'm not really expecting it.

It's awful

Feel free to expand on that in the private Alpha forums! This is a very early look at some concepts, so it's not meant to be a polished experience, hence "Alpha." Looking forward to getting your feedback on what you think needs improvement and what you'd like to see.

Pretty sure there's an NDA.

I see Harmonix staff post here. Maybe you guys can dig up a few extra codes.

Hey! I work at Harmonix (publishing/PR) and am working on Chroma (along with all of the other things OH GOD IS IT NAP TIME?). The initial alpha selection was very limited and based on a number of criteria for us to get (what we hope) will be the cleanest data in terms of feedback for this initial round.

This is a TRUE Alpha in every sense -- it's not near complete, gameplay and art and other stuff is in-progress and temp, etc. We're really hoping to get good feedback from everyone who plays -- "This sucks" isn't helpful, for instance but "this sucks and here's why and what I'd like to see instead" totally IS.

TL;DR -- we (and I) want to get more people in, including GAF members (you're among the most vocal, opinionated folks in gaming, myself included -- you'd be very helpful, I hope), but that'll come. Hang tight. I'll see what I can do for interested folks, but it may be awhile while we ramp up.

I'm under NDA so I can't say why it's awful here (on gaf) but elsewhere I can. I'll be posting my thoughts on the closed alpha forums.

Yay. Heading home to install now. The pedigree is there, so I'm super excited to see what this thing is about.

Oh, but I'm so looking forward to trying this amazing new innovative gameplay idea where you shoot dudes with guns. This development is going to turn the world on its head.

Trials Fusion has a dev team of 210?
Sweet. I can't wait to see how I can climb a tower with a dirt bike to get a totally cinematic immersive 360 view of the course. Hopefully the objective arrows are huge and intrusive.

Is this like, your schtick or something? lol

I might be in a certain mood, but I saw Harmonix and clicked before even reading more and got incredibly disappointed when I clicked through. For the other thread, I'll openly admit that I will not stop taking shots at Ubisoft's bloated assembly line for games until the games that get pumped through it stop playing like reskins of the same product.

God, I want in so bad

also, you at Harmonix should try to get in contact with my bros band, The M Machine. Something like this would most likely interest them in some way, and their music is pretty rad and definately something that ya'll would appreciate :3

You should really check out what they're doing with this one because they're doing a lot of experimental stuff. I think that's one of the main reasons for the alpha, because some of it might be going too far and they need to figure out what's really going to work. For example (this is stuff I'm remembering from podcasts so I might be getting it somewhat wrong) there is a class that basically has the Rock Band notechart scrolling and you can only shoot when you're hitting those notes. There are jump pads around and if you hit it on a certain beat, you'll get more air. Another gun works similarly that does more damage if you shoot on the beat. Weird stuff like that.

Few things:

1. Dub-step-y music in the trailer, but the game will actually have a range of music. The current builds have both electronic music and rock.

2. Fantasia is still in development. It's really, really awesome. I'm biased, so don't take my word for it. But it's really unique. More on that again soon.

3. Rock Band isn't dead. We own and love that IP. Just kind of busy doing new stuff for the moment!

I think that's it for now. Glad to see you're all excited about this crazy weird thing we're making over here. Hope when you play it you dig it. We're looking forward to hearing feedback from players!

I'm mainly curious how the microtransactions will work in this game. How much pay 2 win is there going to be?

Protip: there shouldn't be any.

Zero pay to win. If there is, we screwed something up and you should rake us over the coals about it.

Details of how the microtransactions work specifically will be ironed out as we continue to iterate on the design.

Well, this is funny. I made a post on GAF a little under 2 years ago:

I NEED this in videogame form. Guns that shoot WUBS, grenades that explode into festivals of light and electronic sounds, Dubstep Carpet Bomb killstreak that drops BASS all over the map, perks like Ecstasy Pill that allow you to see through everything including space and time, etc. etc.

Why are there so many military shooters? WE NEED THIS!

Looks like someone had the smarts to turn that post into a game.

I'll be expecting my check soon, Harmonix.

In want in...just saw this and it looks amazing...hopefully people that get in are constructive and not just "this sucks" because that helps absolutely no one.

I'll give it a chance especially since it's free to play, but the announcement of a new Harmonix game to be released on Steam is great. That it's an FPS just sucks all the excitement away.
