Dark Souls II |OT| The Dark Souls of Dark Souls

Just checking in on my fellow stream-avoiders. Still standing?

Never knew where or when they were going on so holding strong out of ignorance haha.

Is there any video of the opening/tutorial/first 5mins or something? Really need something to spur me into buying this. Though I may not get time since yay family visit for the first time in years just happens to be Dark Souls 2 release day.... Dat timing :/

They do apparently. But I think this information comes from the beta, so maybe From changed it again.

Looked it up and Pyromancy's
fire attack scales with int and faith, but the spells itself don't have any stat requirements

I imagine things like
Iron flesh and Power within are still in the game so either way pyromancy should be the right move for me.

Has any of the reviews so far mention the 360 screen tearing? Have the streamers confirmed the tearing is legit and not just because of the stream?

I took some days off of work for the launch but also took days off before it so I'm on a weekend trip with my fiancée to see relatives out of state, so I'll be plenty busy for the next few days and more able to resist. Win-win.

I just watched some streams for a few minutes.
Didn't see anything interesting either.

Was like watching a gameplay trailer.

I opened a stream in a new tab and im just switching to it for a second and then switching back, havent been spoiled of anything yet, im taking them like screenshots lol.

Alright, good news for me. Looks like I can pretty much ignore faith then.

I was going to buy it on PS3 but I'm watching Giantbomb's Demon Souls videos and hearing Brad say that Dark Souls 2 "runs like a dog" on consoles I've decided to just wait for PC. I was hoping they'd have fixed that bad frame rate from Dark Souls 1 but I guess not.

Wow really? When did he say that?

talk about spoilers. the mind boggles...

I've been watching streams.

Finding out what's in the game and being surprised by things just isn't integral to my enjoyment of games (or even films for that matter).

For me it's the same as looking at pictures of somewhere before you are about to go on holiday there - it just heightens the anticipation.

He's wrong. It runs fine. The only problem I've seen on streams is screen tearing and that's been confirmed by the streamers to be caused by capture cards.

Unless by runs like a dog he means it doesn't run at 60fps locked.

Dang.I really hope not. I read more feedbacks that it runs better than DkS w/c is good enough for me. Hoping Monday has more in-depth performance analysis for this game.

Yup, and the temptation is less now that no one is posting the links in here. I think I'll be good to get to Tuesday without seeing the game (other than the short non spoilery videos I've watched).

(not really a spoiler but tagging to be safe) Since I missed the exchange earlier, in regards to
respec, and the argument that "it's fine because no one is forcing you to do it", I disagree. It breaks the integrity of the game. Let's follow the logic to an extreme example, such to illustrate the point: Would you be okay with a "kill everything on screen" button being mapped to the controller from the start? Just don't push it if you don't like it. If you are okay with respecs for the sole reason that they are optional, then you should be able to defend there being a kill all button on the controller for the same reason.

He saw it in person, not just a stream. Just because you haven't seen it on that doesn't mean he's wrong. I'm going to at least wait till more people have it and can say for sure.

I pretty much memorized the weapon upgrade system for DS1 do we know how different it is in 2? Like does it use the same mats or are they totally different?

I agree with you. Although I think the 'no one is forcing you' argument was rebuked several pages ago. It's a silly premise, as you point out.

What I heard:
Mats simplified into one type of titanite, gaining access to an upgrade path lets you start as many weapons as you want on that path just by paying souls.

Good riddance, I say. There are lots of things that make Dark Souls intense and unique, but farming isn't one of them.

Regarding framerate: The reports of better performance and the fact that the game is now unlocked (soft-capped at 30?) make perfect sense together. Dark Souls had wonky frame handling where it was either running at 30 or intermittently dropping all the way to 15, unable to consistently run at anything in between. Dark Souls II is supposed to run at 40+ in some indoor areas, and it's able to drop a little without completely slowing to a crawl like the first one.

It just gives you so much options. With INT and DEX you can use magic and bows to thin out a crowd or whittle down the HP of a tough enemy. But you can still go in with a cool sword if you desire some visceral combat. Too bad pyromancies require a bit of faith now though...

I might go with Swordsman instead of Sorcerer because I don't want to rely on magic from the very start.

Swordsman or Sorcerer for me as well. Basing first playthrough around DEX/INT. While a sorcerer is squishy I'm going to assume the casting distance will still help noob some enemies at the start, like it does in every other souls game.

Streams have their own allure as you get to experience all those things together with other people, it's cool to see people freak out at a new boss or laugh when the player does something dumb. With a decent player none of the "story" stuff really goes missing and you still get that "wow" feeling when seeing new things.

I get to do a min/max playthrough myself, I will already know which stats I will want to level where I should head first and have somewhat of an idea what I should do against bosses without beating my head against the wall over and over.

And I wouldn't last 6 weeks spoiler free until the pc version is out.

I think it even dropped to 5 in some parts of Blighttown. Crazy fault of the engine to not allow in between frame rates.

Absolutely: as much as I want the game into me as soon as possible, I feel no urge to watch a stream, at all. It's a strange feeling...

I feel the same way guys.

i appreciate that you're not alone on this. but, as i said, hell if i can wrap my head around it :) ...

removing the elements of exploration & discovery from the first playthru of a souls game is, for me, destroying something extremely fundamental to the whole experience...

i have no problems with watching streams of a game. they can be fun. but i think there's a big difference between watching them before or after you've played the game yourself...

I'm very torn between starting a cleric and heading down str/faith like I did in my first ever Dark Souls playthrough, or going str/dex quality build like I tend to play Dark Souls lately (I enjoy longswords a lot lately, honestly. quite an excellent weapon when cranked up in a quality build)

I really want to play on release, but I know I would only be able to play for a few hours each day, only. Work schedule sucks. So..I'm gonna hold out for the PC version, since the double dip wouldn't be worth the time I put into the console version.. 6 weeks is so long :(

I handled Blighttown on PS3, I can handle this. Bring it!

I can't wait for the PS3 to arrive, i went in blind on both Demons and Dark Souls as a knight and hacked my way through to the end and the tradition must continue with Dark Souls 2.

Shoemaker's been making these sorts of comments about console games for a while now.

Supposedly maces are really good in DS2 and there are some badass greatswords in the game.

There were brief moments where Dark Souls would hit close to 0 fps, for nearly a whole second-- if DS2 does away with that then we would be looking at an improvement in itself.

I cant contain my excitement. I'm just trying to ruin the game for myself by looking at the people streaming it early, or looking at the beta testing (which i was apart of).

I got to stop

He's very sensitive to bad framerates. He brings it up constantly.

Everytime before a big hyped game comes out, people get frightened by any weird negativity they hear. That fear bounces around in the threads like an echo chamber. Don't worry, the game is good.

Meh. I've watched a couple of minutes here and there. Same as watching that old gameplay demo really. I'll hardly remember it when it comes to my play time.

I understand your position on it, though.

Just wondering, but is anyone actually going to use those preorder bonus weapons? They're hidden in the game already so it seems like a cheat to have them all available from the get-go, and ruins the thrill of finding em yourself.

The pre-order weapons are garbage. They're slightly more powerful then the starter weapons, but, break easily and are easily outclassed.
