Levi sounds too deep/manly. It doesn't mesh with his feminine qualities. Not feeling it. Hanji is too high pitched. Honestly outside of Erwin and Sasha I'm not really liking anyone so far.

I'm not feeling Levi either really. I also think he sounds too deep. He sounds like Chrom from FE. Not awful, I'm sure I'll get used to it, but...eh.

I also thought Connie sounded kinda off. I hope they don't have Eren or Armin sound too deep.

Matthew Mercer gives pretty good performances, but yeah, I don't think he was the right choice here. Way too masculine. Though it could be a lot worse, I suppose. Don't have any complaints about Hanji. Her actress seems like a pretty good fit.

I just rewatched the same scene in Japanese since I couldn't quite remember what Levi sounded like.

Even though his voice is quite deeper in the dub, the line delivery is spot-on. Both voice actors give what I can only describe as the same straight "fuck you, asshole." tone.

Although I was a bit surprised at the deeper voice in the dub, I think Mercer's pulling it off quite well (assuming it's definitely him).

Funimation has done some great casting so far. Matthew Mercer as Levi is pretty awesome. I was definitely thrown off a bit with how deep he was, but the dilevery is spot on. I'll get used to it.

I'm even more excited about the idea of him working with Funimation more in the future for (One Piece)
Trafalgar Law
:)

I was hoping they'd go with Eric Stuart for Levi...

Isn't Levi supposed to sound like he's bored out of his mind? English dub feels weird for some reason.

Levi's tone seems fine, voice does seem a bit deep. I am was just used his old voice. He could sound maybe more nonchalant or unemotional though. He seems a tad bit heroic?

I look forward to watching through it all again with the English dub though to see how well they did.

Levi – Matthew Mercer
Petra – Caitlin Glass
Hange – Jessica Calvello
Daz – Brad Venable
Bertholdt – David Matranga
Franz – James Chandler
Rico – Morgan Garrett
Pyxis – R Bruce Elliott
Nack – Will Short

didnt see posted?

I generally don't like dubs at all, but this seems particularly bad to me. Like, anime VA being so corny is generally less of a big deal because of how corny most anime inherently is, but I am just not getting any genuine emotion from any of these actors.

Matthew Mercer is cool (he did a great voice for Alvin in Tales of Xillia), but damn, he's far too deep for Levi.

Hanji doesn't sound good either. Though I thought her laugh was fine actually.

So are they changing the pronunciation of her name from "Mee-kah-sah" to "Mee-kuh-suh" for the dub or is it just that one line?

BTW, for anyone wanting to compare the original to the dub, the scene here is from episode 7 and starts at about the 10:15 mark (going by Crunchyroll's timing).

She actually sounds pretty good. However, the side characters in that clip sounded terrible.

EDIT: The actress is Trina Nishimura apparently. I'd had a feeling she might be a good fit for Mikasa after hearing her performance as Mari in Evangelion 2.22.

I loved Trina from the Steins; Gate dub. I've always been a fan of the English dub of that anime (actually prefer it to the original, because of Tatum). However, I feel like Trina has a lot of emotion in her VO. And that's why I think she's great. But does that really work with Mikasa who is cold and emotionless?

sounds not great!

At this point I'm convinced that Funimation either has no idea what the personalities of these characters are like, or just chose to completely ignore them. Outside of Erwin and Sasha, I really don't think any of the voice actors chosen so far have come even remotely close to the characters.

Still, I'm going to watch this. I love this series, and I have family that only watches Dub. So I have no issue watching it again (even if the voice acting ends up being questionable). Plus I'm not going to entirely write it off. Once we get full episodes, it might be better. *shrugs*

I'm still going to give it a try, and I'll probably watch the whole first season anyway, but if I can't get used to the voices, I probably won't watch the Season 2,3,4,etc. dubs once they come around.

edit: Oh and I like Mikasa's dub voice.

The dub is pretty bad. This is the first show that I actually would only listen to dub even though I don't speak Jap. I hope there will be a better dub in the future.

I don't think that's true, though. Mikasa has emotions, she just represses them. There's plenty of moments in the show (
generally directly related to the well being of Eren
) where she has big emotional outbursts that Trina could represent fairly well. And frankly, it's a nice surprise since I was expecting something like Michelle Ruff for Mikasa, with a more Yuki-esque less detached way of going about things.

The side-characters sound pretty bad, though.

I'm most worried about who's voicing Eren. I have a nasty suspicion it's going to be Bryce Papenbrook.

Well yeah, I get she's repressing her emotions. To be clear, obviously she's NOT emotionless. But for most of the show, she certainly is. Her voice is usually blunt/cold. We can post spoilers since the episodes already aired. But basically, she is the way she is, out of being hardened by the world. It's more so, she understand how harsh the world is, and what drives her to live is..surviving.

My point is, this voice actor has a very emotional voice (it shakes, and moves), whereas Mikasa usually cuts through the dialogue with a very to the point voice. I'm not really going to judge, because this is just ONE scene. And hell, I actually love this voice actor. So I'm not even really complaining. I'm excited to see what she does with it. I'll just be curious to see what she does with Mikasa's other parts (that are more cold/reserved).

I totally get your concern (and share it to an extent), but at the same time, I'm hoping that she can bring something interesting to the character by being a bit more emotional. To be honest, I felt like Mikasa was unrealistically cold and emotionless, and found it very distracting. I understand that not every character is going to be emotionally expressive, but Mikasa always came across as robotic rather than simply withdrawn/repressed. My hope is that Nishimura can ground the character a little more by being emotional without going overboard.

No. No. You shut your mouth. I will not have this. :p
Though I seriously can't predict who they're gonna pick. My gut still says Vic Mignogna.

He's not Funimation voice actor, and I don't see them flying a VA in to texas whom they don't usually work with.

Mikasa sounds fine. Grunts sound like grunts. Levi isn't what I was expecting, but I like Mercer so whatever.

Mikasa sounds okay. I'll have to hear more. Really need to hear Eren and Armin though. These two could easily break the whole dub.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
I'm guessing Josh Grelle will be Eren. He's a guest at the Anime Boston con that's premiering the dub so he's the most likely candidate.

I dunno, man. It looks like they're branching out a bit with the cast. Matthew Mercer and Ashly Burch definitely weren't picked from Funimation's typical pool of VAs (which renews my hope for Yuri Lowenthal as Eren).

Weird, his wiki page says he is Eren for AoT dub. Obviously anyone can edit it though. Wonder how long ago it was edited to that.

Wait, people who like dubs actually want Yuri Lowenthal? He's, like, the worst. His Simon was abysmal and he sounds the same in every single role that isn't in No More Heroes 2.

Yep. I haven't watched many of the anime series he's acted in, but his voice acting in Western cartoons is pretty good. Better than the majority of anime voice acting for sure. As long as he doesn't use his super high-pitched voice, I think he could pull Eren off.

he sounds the same in every single role that isn't in No More Heroes 2.

And I'm gonna have to call bull on this. Hell, in Young Justice alone he had several distinct roles. His voice is pretty unmistakable, and many roles may require him to do the same voice, but he definitely has variety.

Excited for Trina as Mikasa, although I do agree she might not fit a character who appears so emotionless most of the time. Trina's a great VA. She's the only Mari VA, as far as I'm concerned. She owns that character.

Mikasa sounds good to me *shrugs* typical dub haters hating dubs

I hate this argument, just because someone as a generality doesn't care for the quality of acting in most dubs doesn't mean they can't make valid criticisms of the acting. Generally I think English anime VA is shit, but Mikasa isn't bad, it's just outright incorrect for the character.

I like dubs! I actually wish all dubs were high quality, because I think reading dialogue is distracting. I even think some dubs are better than the original. Anyways, I'm still excited for Mikasa. I'm a big fan of the voice actor, and I'm curious to see what she does with the role.

I gave the preview a couple more listens, and I'm coming around to it! To be clear, I never thought it was bad. More so, I was just voicing my concerns because I. I know this voice actors work (and I like her a lot, but I was wondering if it would mesh with Mikasa) and II. I was just curious how they will carry Mikasa's overall voice beyond this scene.

The thing to keep in mind is, these are just previews. So making any real judgment call based on these alone is silly. I think all you can give is just gut reactions. So far I like Erwin, Mikasa, Connie + Sasha (well, I like the acting choice. We didn't get to hear any dialogue from her besides the scream). Everyone else just seems like a mis-match to me. But I'm willing to see how they play out in the actual episodes.

If you already think dubs are mostly bad then you're not actually able to give much of an opinion at all. You might as well not comment at that point, especially when you bash a good va like Yuri Lowenthall it just makes you seem like a troll

As someone who knows nothing about the show/characters I like most of the acting in the scenes shown so far, although some of the (what I assume are) side characters aren't as good.

There are good dubs, they're just few and very far between. I don't like the taste of Vodka remotely, but I can tell a good vodka from a bad vodka. Saying I don't have an opinion because you disagree with it is stupid and fanboyish.

And come on, Yuri Lowenthal isn't great, he's just more distinct than most VAs and has played a lot of likable characters. His main issue is the same one a lot of these guys run into, in that the first role you hear him in is his definitive role, just like Johnny Yong Bosch.
