He is surely an objective source.

I find him one of the more open suits out there, sure he's still a suit but i find him likeable to the point of giving him the benefit of the doubt. Clearly he's not going to say "its shit"! He could of said, nothing to report, please understand....but anyway.
 
I've seen complaints about iRacing, and people making and looking for suggestions on how to reduce motion sickness with it.

It's true that some - most? - people build up legs, I'm sure it's true that people have no problem at all even starting out with that, but I think it's also true that speed and acceleration is something that has to be handled with care for a generally comfortable experience in VR. Heck, I remember Palmer Luckey talking about how even a game like Unreal could be tricky in VR because its run speed was 30kph.

I can see this. First time I tried 3D on home tv I felt a little sick but got used to it.

It's good of Sony/Yoshida to clarify this and this increases Evolution Studios responsibility. Drive Club, when it resurfaces needs to justify this delay.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida admits that he thought Demon's Souls – a game Sony had the opportunity to publish – was "crap … unbelievably bad."

Speaking to Game Informer, Yoshida said that when he first saw Demon's Souls it was a mess, with framerate problems and no network features, and that as such Sony opted against picking up the publishing rights.

"Game development in Japan typically is made horizontally, where all assets are made in parallel, so it's difficult to figure out what the final state of the game is going to be," he said. "The western-style game development is typically a vertical slice. So in the very early process, the team tried to create a small piece of the experience that resembles the final product.

"What happened with Demon's Souls was until very late in the game's development, we were not able to play the game through. There were framerate issues and the network was not up and running. We underestimated the quality of the game and to be honest, the media in Japan did the same.

"For my personal experience with Demon's Souls, when it was close to final I spent close to two hours playing it, and after two hours I was still standing at the beginning of the game.

"I said, 'This is crap. This is an unbelievably bad game.' So I put it aside."

The final product, of course, was much better, and Atlus, in North America, and Namco in Europe picked up the publishing rights to the game, which far outstripped initial sales expectations. Sony admitted in 2010 that its failure to publish the game was "a mistake

I still simply think the delay has to do with all the complaints about 30fps and the time it takes to upgrade to locked 60fps.

Rather he says something publicly is irrelevant. He has a history of halting or even canceling products he honestly thinks are subpar and as Im glad you also pointed out, he is willing to put his name on the line for products that are good and will express disappointment if they aren't recieved well.

He was at the forefront of canceling one of the most anticipated new IPs from one of Sony's top teams because he didn't think it was going to be up to par and overshadowed by other games. There has been delays on top of delays on games like TLG because they don't meet up to standards.

When somebody says they are excited by Yoshida's promises, its with good merit.

I really think the reason is that Drive Club is a game built for traditional screen display at 30 FPS on PS4. Making it work well in VR would require a major redesign.

In my experience, games with a cockpit view are some of the easiest to get used to in VR.

Well, I think there's a huge difference from paying $60 for a game and not paying it all. Don't you think? PS+ for an entire year with tons of free games doesn't even cost the price of the game. You don't think Sony would rather have you pay for the games they sell?

Either way, hype deflated. It had a good chance of being purchased without much competition at launch, but with summer comes the DK2 (ordered) and a PC upgrade, plus getting some PS4, Vita, and 3DS games. There's just too much competition for it now.

Ah well, hopefully it doesn't go through the GT5-esque debacle "no, Spring!" "well, probably not Spring" "OK, this month" "now .. we never actually 'officially' said 'this month' so next month". And it still had major issues.

I just hope it launches while I'm still within my year for PS+ so I can try it. No wheel support = no buy and no VR = sad. Hopefully they'll patch it in, I don't care if it's a lower resolution (or they are building something else for it which is fine).

I think whatever prototype they have was probably 60fps. I don't think they're that naive that they'd try 30fps and call it a day.

I'm curious, though, if the nature of the game's handling, the nature of its environments (a lot of high frequency detail which would heighten speed perception), the nature of the road topology (more off-road than smooth track) etc. are a factor, that might make a game like it more difficult to mesh with VR than some other racing games. And they're obviously not going to change those things just for a VR mode. Might ask yosp if he thinks there's a fundamental issue with racing on VR or if it's a matter of individual game characteristics.
 
not sure why you would assume that given it's a 30 fps game that is likely to ship a year before Sony gets the VR hardware out.

I could see a VR mode in DC2... maybe. or GT7.
Yeah, well now it's obvious. Two days ago before the Morpheus reveal plus the lack of DC news until now caused the VR driver's seat rumor mill to go full force. It just sounded so perfect :(

What a waste. That is the kind of thing that might make me go with the OR in the end.

I understand where he comes from, trying to preserve the image of VR, but still feel like a huge missed opportunity.

Motion sickness is something some can get used to , so what if Yoshida felt sick? Giving us an option to chose would be much more appropriate. Just warn people to start with small sections and stop if they are not feeling well.

Some experiences are going to make people sick in VR, many RL experiences do the same.
 
Although there was a bit of software scarcity at the launch of the console, am I the only person who is happy that many launch-day or launch-window (whatever that means) releases got delayed in order to be polished?

When comparing this generation's launch to previous ones, there is hardly any one game I remember I would want to play now, but most of the games being released for these new consoles have enough quality to be appreciated even years from now and I think that's more positive than having rushed mediocre software on store shelves.

Developers get roughly the same amount of funds as downloads. Plus, you are plopping down 60 bucks for their service, and it's not even the full version of the game.

So can we finally put that rumoured VR/DC connection to rest? Where did that come from anyway?
it's not like he's going to confirm it just like that. they could lie to surprise us, much like what david jaffe did when he said twisted metal isn't coming then boom, weeks later he was at e3.
 
Good and bad news at the same time, at least we'll get DC before Morpheus, but no DC VR at all is disappointing. See you with GT7 in 2017 ;(

So what the fuck is going on then?

I tried this game out last year and there was *nothing* wrong with the visuals. Certainly would be the best looking next-gen driving game on the market even as it was.

My guess is they're retooling the social aspect and challenges after their first go was found to not be good.

Making a pretty driving game was the easy part. Making it a good social MP game is obviously tougher.

If the delay is truly necessary, so be it. But there'll be enough going on this year that DriveClub isn't necessary to justify my purchase of this PS4 anyway. I'll swing around if it releases and proves worth my time, but I'm happy to scratch it off my list until then. This autumn is probably going to be chock full of good stuff even without it.

They get the 60$ regardless and you're telling ES will make just as much money as long as most people get it on PS+?

Bummer. That rumor got me interested in the game. With the delay... will likely end up moving on and playing it when its easily in stock via GameFly months after release.
 
That's a real shame. I've not experienced any problems bazzing around at top speeds in VR. There's a Mario Kart DK Mountain demo that was a bit tough going over some downhill ramps, and flipping your truck in Euro Truck Simulator isn't pleasant (which actually works in its favour) but straight racing games would rock.
 
On the one hand that's a bummer it won't have a VR mode, but on the other hand that means we might actually get it this year. You win some you lose some.
