Digital Foundry: Performance analysis: inFamous: Second Son

No matter how great your pc rig is, I:SS still looks impressive - and probably is the most impressive looking game today.

Okay, it's an exaggeration. But imo the GOW collection looks better.

I simply thought Infamous 2 was an average-at-best looking PS3 title. I didn't care though; the gameplay was a more important factor. It just didn't impress me visually.

Because the 256 mb of video RAM was absolutely brutal for open world games. Ask Rockstar, Bethesda, Volition, and Sucker Punch. The 360 versions of their games (excluding Sucker Punch) shows how weak as shit the PS3 hardware was for open world.

People crown Naughty Dog as king when they really selected the genres best suited to the PS3 hardware.

Honestly the visuals of Infamous 2 weren't a strong point. They weren't terrible but I wouldn't consider them great. I know it's open world but it does look a lot like a PS2 game.

Do not look at spoiler if you did not finished InFamous second son
the first pic look a lot like the last boss from Second Son.

For the PS3 it was pretty impressive. It was a terrible hardware architecture for open world games. That genre of games had the most difficult time of all the genres with the absolute most corners cut and the greatest difference between 360 and PS3 performance delta.

Naughty Dog took the easy road by not touching this genre with a 10 foot pole and sticking to linear corridor games, yet everyone treats them as some sort of technical power house because their linear games are pretty while Sucker Punch was pulling off the most difficult genre to do on PS3.

I'm saying it now. Sucker Punch is the most technically gifted studio Sony has.

Naughty Dog pulling off yet another more visually impressive super-linear game won't change that opinion.

I could be wrong, but weren't ND themselves plus some other ICE team members drafted in to help sucker punch improve the engine post inFamous to produce the noticeably better efforts in inFamous 2?

I suspect that from a pure technical programming aspect ND remain Sony's top studio, perhaps only matched by Santa Monica. Sucker Punch have really delivered with Second Son though - its definitely best best IQ next gen game and has really great performance too.

One things for sure - with so many top performing studios you can argue which is best technically if nothing else the PS4 is sure going to see some amazing games going forward.

You have to wonder how much Sucker Punch, for example, could further optimize and tune the engine from where it is now? They've already got a terrific engine that doesn't drop below 30fps with fantastic IQ and the ability to render a detailed open world - and they probably started the design/development when PS4 was going to be 4GB so I've no doubt further tuning/optimization will be possible going forward.

GTA V ran better on the PS3.

What now ? Infamous 2 didn't look good now ? :(

Talking about Infamous SS ...
I'm not here to insult anyone, but please, don't say the visuals of Infamous SS is nothing special otherwise you will lose any credibility for the future, when we talk about other games.

I agree with some opinions, but there are some facts that should be taken into consideration before leaving negative comments ... I mean, the visual isn't perfect or the frame rate isn't rocksolid or things like that, but I can't believe you are not amazed by the whole visuals of this game ...

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
I'm rather fond of the lighting in Second Son. It'll probably be the first game I play when I eventually get a PS4.

This game doesn´t cease to impress. Beautiful game. Lighting is from another world and this is just a game in the PS4 newborn life cycle. Greatness Awaits, indeed.

I'm usually not one to freak over frame judder, but I've also never noticed it as much as I do here. It's the oddest thing because in combat the game feels smooth as silk, yet when just running down a street I get these frame hiccups that feel like when you would get a checkpoint in Halo. It feels like the game pauses for a tenth of a second to save/load, but happens every 5 seconds.

Second Son is an amazing looking game, I personally don't understand how anyone could downplay it as much as I've been reading in this thread without some type of agenda or eye damage.

you said "Ask Rockstar".

So? Ask them. They'll probably agree. Open world games were a bitch to pull off on PS3. Not sure what you're saying here.

Red Dead Redemption was inferior on PS3. Just because it was "possible" to make an open world game that ran great on PS3, even if it ran better than 360, doesn't mean it wasn't a bitch-and-a-half to pull off.

IDK, looks exactly like Infamous 2. And also exactly like Infamous: Second Son. Maybe even better than Crysis 3 on the most powerful PC in the world.

Oh, by the way, could somebody recommend a good optician?

No need for a good optician, your eyes are beyond saving, probably for the best if you just rip them out of their sockets and stamp on them.

Undoubtedly one of the best looking games I've ever played, and certainly the best-looking console game. Shadowfall would be just about neck-and-neck, but I've got a soft spot for the present-day Seattle thing Second Son has going on.

I think I understand what people mean in regards to the stuttering, but I'm almost finished the main storyline and I've never found myself bothered by it. If anything I've been continually impressed at how smoothly everything runs, even when the action hots up. The IQ is ludicrous, and the only significant chink in the armor I've noticed is the way shadows split into higher or lower quality versions as you approach them.

Please use better spoiler etiquette, OverHeat.

Ha, I kinda blundered into that one too. Pretty much my own fault though, I should really avoid all spoiler tags in Second Son threads until I've finished the story.

SP really have knocked it out of the park, the game looks downright beautiful, a real sight to behold in motion. The presentation of the game as well, from the cutscenes down to the voice acting have been improved dramatically, I can't wait to see what SP do next.

It is definitely the best looking game on any platform. My mind is truly blown by it. I said this in the screens thread but it looks like a moving bullshot.

I thought I2 was actually one of the more impressive games from an open world perspective.

The thing that dragged it down for me were the low res alpha effects but it is very impressive visually, and I'm surprised more people don't think so.

It doesn't even look in the realm of PS2 games.

I always thought I2 was a great looking game. It was also a massive step up from Infamous 1 which was so ugly.

Yup.

The game is objectively stunning, especially this early into the PS4's life.

It was sound technically, but a somewhat uninspired art directions dragged it down. They've corrected that in spades here. This game not only looks amazing in terms of tech and art direction, but it looks somehow different than anything - they've found their own visual language with it basically.

Can You explain me why should 8800 GTX run past gen games in 1080p and highest settings and AA, when even current gen consoles doesnt?
You know that highest settings on PC are not the settings of past gen consoles.
1080p, highest settings and high AA requires sometimes more than 10x more times GPU power than past gen consoles, so:
Why would a GPU increased its power with generation going forward?

I really dont understand Your logic.

If you read my post carefully you'll understand: an 8800 series card did not last an entire gen playing console ports maxed out at 60 fps with all the whizbang visuals on. It got worse and worse as time went on... so when people try to act as if one card is enough for a whole gen, its very misleading and just a silly thing to say. You continually have to upgrade if you want to run console ports maxed out at 60 fps.

It's true what they say, people remember old games in HD lol

Infamous 2 is far far better than any PS2 game
The statement that I2 looks like a PS2 game is so utterly incompetent it doesn't need any sort of validation via response. Let trolls be trolls and ignore the idiocy.

And it was a really good looking PS3 game, especially being open world . Infamous SS is currently the best looking game I've ever played

1080p/30FPS open-world with good effects on a $400 machine? SS looks very impressive.

....who was making the point that a 8800 maxes out games? It still performs on-par/better than the 360/PS3 (1280x720+ at low to high settings). It didn't get "worse". Our standards got higher (1080p).

This generation we have games that are already doing 1080p on PS4. PC graphics cards aren't suddenly going to become worse than what consoles are outputting.

His point was that early on when it was out, you could max out current console games at 1080p/60/more effects using 8800, but later on in the following years, you couldn't. I'm not sure if the initial assessment (of ever being able to max out console games at 1080p/60) is true, but it's definitely true that you couldn't max out games later on like that with just 8800, probably not even if you keep effects consistent between the platforms by choosing Medium setting on PC or something like that.

And why would it? Maxed out settings are not console like settings, they are made with the highest end PC in mind at the time of release, sometimes even for SLI/Crossfire configurations.
You really need to think out what are You claiming.
And no, no one said that You can buy today a GPU and maxed out every single game in 5-6 years, but You will be able to play those games in 60fps on consoles settings or even higher without a problem and thats the whole point.

More like low settings and yes You could as i showed earlier with BF 4 video example
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtXRKUj_fGc
900p, 40 fps average and medium settings [console versions are running low].
There are tons of other examples on the internet, like Mass Effect 3 or Crysis 2 running at 1080p in 30+fps on 8800 GT on higher settings than console quality or BF 3 running at 60fps in 720p in 64 multiplayer matches etc
