Amazon FireTV Announced and Released [$99 box, $40 controller, game capable STB]

After seeing all the additions in just 24 hours, I'm tempted replace my Ouya and Intel NUC with a Fire TV as my primary video playback tools. Change my NUC to just Steam PC and Ouya as a paper weight.

I find it interesting that in the Amazon App Submission process it encourages you to test for other controllers, as though they want to encourage people to use multiple types of controllers, not just their own.

Honestly, the Amazon controller is comfy enough. It could use less of a flat face and more concave curvature under the triggers, but it's fine and dandy.

Except the DPad. It's pretty terrible.

Plex is seriously amazing software. We use it on our Roku (server being Mac Mini connected to NAS) and it works great. It used to be free on Roku but now I think you have to pay like $5 for it. Haven't checked the Fire TV store yet but I imagine it's $5 there too. It indexes all your content and gives you cover pictures, theme songs, metadeta, episode/movie descriptions, keeps track of what you've watched, etc. It's way better than navigating a folder structure to watch things.

I'm telling you :) I did the same thing. I feel like Plex is even more stable on Amazon Fire TV than it was on the windows client that I had running on my NUC

I have a NAS and rather not run Plex. I'm sure in a week or two XBMC will be working just fine :)

Is the WWE Network app available, or if not, has anyone tried sideloading it? Looking for some impressions of how it runs on the Fire TV. I have a PS3/PS4, but it would be nice to have a device that uses a low amount of power for my video watching.

I don't know if this has been posted yet but just found this gameplay of Sev Zero recorded by a PVR.

Thanks for posting. I know this was just the tutorial level but it looked super boring.
Looks like the defense tower placements are fixed, which will make the gameplay easier.

The game really has the mobile/Gameloft look all over it.

Hope we will get more impressions of it here soon.

yeah I have a NAS too but I have the Plex app running from it.
I'm not the biggest fan of XBMC though :(
I've moved to archiving all my movies as MKV and I've had nothing but problems when attempting to playback MKV without transcoding them on the server and playing back on the streaming box (Ouya, Apple TV) using Plex. Installed XBMC which plays back MKV native, never had a problem.

Any word on how many co-op games are available? That could be a selling factor I could use with my wife (Hey babe, we can play game X and Y together!)

If you want Netflix, Amazon etc and great co-op experiences pick up a Wii U. It got my girlfriend really into gaming, and we play Rayman Legends, Donkey Kong, 3D World and other games together all the time now.

What problems were you having? I never had any problems with or without transcoding.

As far as I can tell, voice commands are just for search. However, if you have Netflix installed, you can just say "Netflix" and it will be the first search result, then you can press enter to open it (as it's already on your system). So in a roundabout way, you can open apps with voice search. Which is great news for me, because the interface is too much to muck around in looking for something imo.
Obviously I look forward to UI updates ... but that doesn't sound like a bad work around to be honest.

While on Roku stuff at the top (or bottom since you can wrap) is quick to get to ... apps in the middle of the grid can take a little while. With the voice search, at least they should all take the same time and be relatively quick.

I ran plex with my anime and they are mkv's and it does subtitles perfect.......and it does full 1080p with the option of even DTS...unreal, you can also change the subtitle size between tiny, small, normal, large and HUGE.......also Plex will transcode unsupported subtitles as well on the FireTV.....there is also Direct Play as well.
I can think of so many raw anime I'd love to watch that never got official dubs or subs. Wonder if this is available on PC.

Netflix and Amazon Prime are both quick as hell and my 6 year old is having a blast with all the games he already knows how to play from my phone. Its not a revelation or gamechanger but it does what I thought it would do and once FreeTime Unlimited is available the kids should be even happier.

Yeah it would be great if I could get HBOGo right now, but all in all its a fine addition to the living room as long as you know what you're getting.

All that said, we also have a PS4 and WiiU so I'm not looking at it as a straight gaming platform.

Someone sideloaded it, but apparently it is all zoomed in.

I am surprised to see how popular the WWE is, I've seen that brought up a lot.

They probably already have a native app in the works, but until then we will be sideloading.

I'm just hoping we can get USB storage working for native play through XBMC.

Well I still have lots of questions. Like whether it passes through DTS-HD/Dolby True HD to AVRS.

And of course I'm still frustrated about there still being no real single device solution, aside from I guess a HTPC.

Cool, thank you for the info. I'll have to wait a bit to pull the trigger. But it sounds like the Fire TV could make a really nice streaming/hacking box, as long as Amazon isn't interested in plugging the holes and closing it up.

A lot of people are surprised by it...but the Network is honestly revolutionary for people who are either currently interested in the product, or have been interested in the past enough to consider a $10/month investment. And, every Monday night, RAW is still either the #1 or #2 rated show on cable TV, and constantly leads social media activity for television.

That will make a nice replacement of my Roku 2 in the living room. The fact it also doubles-up as a gaming platform for Android games is a nice plus. I'll buy it after a while really.

For those wondering about Crunchyroll, it works, I was able to log in and play stuff from my queue, search, etc. The remote's play/pause/ff/rw buttons work too! It took a while to buffer initially for me (although again, my internet is slow) and just showed a black screen before the video started, no UI would come up. So be aware of that. It's also kind of buggy, too, so if you get a stream going, don't mess with it too much. :p

how in the blue hell do I sideload an app.........maybe someone on here can make a better set of instructions

Sideloading apps:

  1. First go into settings>developer and enable dev mode so you can sideload.
  2. Install ADB (it's in the Android SDK, but that's 500MB, so get it from here)
  3. If you used the download I linked, you can use adb from anywhere (otherwise you'll need to find where adb is and open the command line from there)
  4. Connect your FireTV and PC to the same network, and get the IP of the FireTV. To do this go to settings>about>network and write down the IP.
  5. On your PC, open up command prompt and type these three commands
    Code:
    adb kill-server
    adb start-server
    adb connect <firetv ip>
  6. If all goes well, it should say something like
    Code:
    connected to <firetv ip>:5555
  7. Now you can do adb stuff. To install an app, just type
    Code:
    adb install C:\path\to\app.apk
  8. Depending on the size of the apk it may be just a second that it takes to copy and install, or it may take a few minutes. But it should say success if it worked. If not, it'll tell you why.
  9. To access the apps, go into settings>applications and scroll through the list to find what you sideloaded.

Fantastic worked like a charm, crunchyroll must load in 720p instead of 1080p.......but sideloading it works 100% no issues.

Hoping for an official app though to get better HD quality, but this works for now

It doesn't look bad for a cheap Android game. The small amount of storage on the thing hampers it as a gaming machine but that isn't the main selling point of this thing yet. The things still some sort of Snapdragon 600 variant. Somewhere in between a 360 and Vita. This fall should be the start of ARMv8 devices coming out so next year we would probably see a Fire TV with a Tegra K1 equivalent processor. That's when I think they'll start pushing games as a bigger factor in the platform becuase it's not hard to stream h.264 1080p video anymore. Once they get hardware decoders for VP9, h.265 that are good enough to playback 4k videos at up to 60fps(that's what Netflix will be supporting up to), there won't be much reason to keep buying new streaming boxes since these UI's have been really snappy since the Roku 3. In a year these things will be as capable as a 360 and soon after even better and these are cheap to upgrade compared to a Smart TV. I think streaming boxes still have long legs. Especially if they can get content for growing markets like Brazil and India.

Ordered one, should be here Saturday (won't get a chance to mess with it until Sunday). My Roku Streaming Stick is going back to Amazon since I wasn't a huge fan of it. I'm taking a bit of a leap of faith that the 5.1 surround issue with Plex gets fixed soon, if not I guess the FireTV can be returned.

Doesn't plex have a plug in for that as well

Everything I've been reading about Plex makes it sound like I'd need a computer running to act as a server for it. I'm looking for a one-device, twitch streaming solution. If I'm incorrect, then the Plex plug-in would be great.

Does Final Fantasy VI have controller support?

Who am I kidding, I would just hook up the SNES. That port is godawful.

As I mentioned a page or two back, SNES works like a charm once you get it set up. :)

Has anyone tried sideloading the Twitch.TV app?

Same for Twitch, it loads streams in fullscreen at high or source from what I can tell. No way to change stream quality or comment/see chat, but streams themselves work well. Haven't tried any other Twitch apps like Streamie (although I did install it).

Ordered a Fire TV and controller. Really hyped for this over Apple TV, Ouya and Roku and being a Prime Member should help get amazon streaming videos. Man, i expect more cable companies to go on amazon's side as the fire tv picks up in sales

you are correct, you need a NAS or PC running the Plex application to use it on the FireTV.

Apologies if old, but this is a great deal. Plex is currently on sale for $0.99 (normally $4.99) on Amazon. Pretty awesome price and awesome thing to have if you are just getting your FireTV!

That being said, RF is often more convenient, but having both is nicer. Especially when there's also many devices that can use IR blasters to command other devices (the XBox One can control others devices using the Kinect as an IR blasters, no?). It's also easier to develop your own custom IR solutions.
This so much.

Automation exists for IR, RS-232, and IP ... with IR being the most common at the consumer level.

picked one up, mainly to invest in idea, Amazons been good to me. If its yearly the third gen should be very interesting.

I'm toying with doing the same. I would like to see it gain some traction so I can have a cheap gaming rig to toss in my laptop bag and play games when I travel for work.

People dog the mobile game space, but it is actually maturing in quality fairly quickly. The lack of ubiquitous controller support across titles is what is holding it back in my opinion.

If Apple/Google also releases a new TV box with games and a controller I think it could be a great space for titles that just don't have the scope for the next gen consoles. I know people will say "PC has this already", but the problem with PC is that it isn't standardized and never will be (nor do I want it to be!). That will always keep out your general population.

Short version: I want to this type of product succeed for casual/different experiences WITH real control support but don't think it will happen without Amazon/Apple/google backing it.
