Super Smash Bros. for 3DS Summer 2014, Wii U Winter 2014

I wish I understood the point of roster parity, Wii U really needs to differentiate itself from the 3DS version. Not just with better graphics and different stages.

It's coming out what, a minimum of 3 months or so later than the 3DS version, and Wii U roster has to be held back by the limitations of the 3DS?

My guess is both versions will have different unlockable secret characters. Shulk for Wii U version, Layton for 3DS version etc.

With the Wii U version releasing later, they're not going to want to spoil the identities of it's secret characters by using the same ones from the 3DS version, right?

Well now I don't know if I want to get mario kart 8 now either. If e3 comes a week later, and zelda and mario are announced...for 3DS. I may just sell this thing.

I have a Wii U since launch and I enjoy it a lot. I'm not shitting on the Wii U. That's beside the point. I'm just amazed how they missed such a good opportunity to have MK8 and SSB4 together to push the console. I'm amazed how in April we have only confirmations for MK8 in May and SSB4 in Winter 2014 (whatever that means).

And about paying 300 for a single game, when there is 1 game released at 2-3 months distance, practically the Wii U proposition is always about paying 300 for a single game (because it's obvious that the previous games didn't convince you enough).

I don't disagree. Wii U needs as much as possible, but it also needs better pacing and good quality games. If that means delays to spread them out and spend extra time developing then that's fine with me even it' a bit sad it's had to come to that. Lets see E3 first I guess. It's scarily close.

I expected it to be the other way around. This was a real surprise to me.

I just hope he means July Summer and not September Summer :I

You honestly feel TF wasn't a system seller because Returns was ported to the 3DS? You don't think that perhaps it wasn't a system seller to begin with?

Might not be main reason (I don't have any study to see that), but I think that 3ds is the biggest "enemy" of Wii U, especially when we talk about games that have similar gameplay. It's the cheaper food for Nintendo hunger. If you add on top the fact that similar games released some months before on 3ds, it means less incentives for Wii U.

This is actually really smart.
3DS version manufactures hype for the 'real' version which releases in the peak holiday season with Nintendo's full marketing muscle behind it.

Yes, I know the 3DS version is as much a 'real' Smash as the Wii U one. But the western market does not think that way is the point.

Jesus christ. It's coming this year people bar delays.

Why would a game coming out later make you want Mario Kart less? Why would the Wii U Zelda be announced for 3DS?

Just an anecdote, but DKR:3D was what made me buy TF.

What a strange decision. How well is the Smash franchise received in Japan? Do they just want to cash in on the japanese market as soon as possible and don't care about the cannibalizing effect it will have on the Wii U version?

The OP and edit by Nirolak is also gold :)

Smash Bros Brawl sold 819,647 copies in Japan during its first 3 days of sales. It broke a million copies by its first week, then 1.35 million copies by its first month. The game remained in the top 10 from the week of Jan 28 to April 20th. By the end of April, the game sold over 1.57 million copies. To compare, Brawl sold 874,000 copies in the U.S. during its first day and a total of 1.4 million during by its first week. The game went on to sell 2.7 million in its first month of release. Global sales of the game were reported to be 11.49 million copies as of December 2013, making it the 9th best selling Wii game.

Woot! I'm actually okay with this cuz I don't have a Wii U... will probably pick up a 3DS soon

But isn't the graphics gonna suck compared to the Wii U?

haha Nintendo really is sending the Wii U out to die. anyone who believes come winter, that Smash Bros. will somehow manage not to be crushed under the hype of black friday and Xmas advertising for the PS4 and X1 are dreaming. Nintendo is basically pulling a Super Mario 3D World AGAIN! Smash Bros. will release unnoticed in retail between the hype of any fall/winter PS4 and X1 game. only people buying Smash Bros. are people who already follow Nintendo and own a Wii U. Nintendo E3 direct will definitely be interesting, I'm curious to see what other games are even still coming out for the Wii U and if any at all new major titles are announced. the fate of Zelda U will be interesting to see. hopefully X still makes it to release.

I highly doubt they look at September as being summer.

I feel like a kingdom hearts game was announced for summer before and it ended up being late September or something. I remember getting it when I was already back to school and being pissed off about it lol.

Okay thank you for actually finding that.

I'll remove the date ranges from the OP then as well.

The article you quoted got its information from the Nintendo Direct. Here is a screenshot of said direct. So again, I disagree that that is really proof of anything.

Might be worth adding them back in to the OP again.

I hope they make a cool 3ds xl bundle. I feel like this game is probably going to be more fun with bigger screens. I will have to try to sell my launch day 3ds.

Just noticed that megaman legends megaman is in the final smash. :( He will finally be on 3ds as promised. *dies inside*

I mean obviously it's not going to look as good as Wii U, but it looks pretty great for a portable Smash Bros game.

NSMB2 - NSMBU
DKCR 3d - DKC:TF
SM3DL - SM3DW

There is a reason why none of these, although really great games, proved not to be really huge system sellers for Wii U (maybe NSMBU but combined also with the launch semi-hype) and didn't provide any momentum for the hardware past several launching week. Now, let's do the same thing and expect different results. SSB4 3ds - SSB 4 Wii U.

Again, at list MK8 is on a totally different level than anything before in the series and from the existing game on Wii U.

You're confusing correlation for causation. Those are three examples of games that sold below expectations on the Wii U, and also happen to have franchise presence on the 3DS. In reality, though, there are many more games that didn't sell particularly well on the Wii U, two out of the three titles you listed also happen to be among the best selling ones, and the fate of one of those was probably far more influenced by its Wii predecessor than the 3DS port of that predecessor. Zooming out a little further, the best selling DS game and one of the best selling Wii games happened to share a series: NSMB. A case could even be made that all three of those games would have sold worse without their 3DS cousins!

In general, "the reason" the three listed titles had limited success as system sellers probably had little to nothing to do with the 3DS.

I really hate there is a 3ds version.

It could have been finished earlier
Feature and character parity which might have led to no trainer and less pikmin for olimar
Less sales for Wii U

I'm still of the opinion that people who would want the 3DS version were going to buy both versions at some point anyways. I can't see anyone looking at 3DS controls and saying that it slakes their Smash Bros. hunger. Because even AMATEUR players know how controls make the difference. Unless people are silly enough to think that multiple people were playing Brawl with a Wiimote and nunchuck.

Heck, even here... who here would still be hyped for Smash if the Wii U version suddenly didn't exist? Very few of you, I reckon. Because remember: anyone who would only buy the 3DS version wouldn't care about the console version. So literally imagine that sort of scenario, where the 3DS version is all that was ever announced and there was confirmed to be no Wii U version.

I wasn't planning on getting the 3DS version, but now that it releases earlier I'll have to get it too.

I can see this panning out in one of two ways.

1. People buy the 3DS version and are satisfied with it, hype for the Wii U version dies.

2. People who would have skipped the 3DS version buy it because they can't wait, hype for the 'real' version on Wii U increases, we all end up spending $100 on Smash Bros this year.

or maybe a combination of both I dunno.

Kinda bummed about the Wii U ver. coming out later for a few reasons but I'm looking forward to it all the same.

I only have one friend with a 3DS who luckily happens to be my favorite person to play Smash with, so playing with him and online will hold me until the definitive version is out. The meat and potatoes of the Smash games has always been playing with a group of people in the same room, on one screen, while others waiting their turn watch and everyone loses their shit.

I don't know what to believe now...

Edit: ... And I just realized that seasons are flipped for the Southern hemisphere. Oops.

Should I buy a 3ds for this? Man, it would literally be the only reason. I just don't want to sit around and wait for the Wii U version that could possibly get delayed.

Too many businessmen in this thread, complaining that we're getting a great 3DS game this summer.

If I ever let the business side of the industry overtake my love of the games, please shoot me.

I am with the people that agreed...this is sending the Wii U version to die. This is a really stupid move in all honesty. They are so apart and most will get there fill with the 3DS version and if they don't have a Wii U, they won't bother getting a Wii U now for Smash.

They expect Mario Kart 8 to carry Wii U till winter now? (I know there is Bayonetta and X, but that is it and there is no release for them).

I don't mind getting the 3DS version, I might even prefer it but...those damn shoulder buttons. I didn't even own Mario Kart on the DS and my shoulder buttons died from regular use, same thing with the GBA. I'm afraid if I buy Smash Bros. I'll have to buy a new 3DS in a year or two.

Ummmm.... you're missing a fair number of titles that can fill that space. One of which already has a release window in Japan, from what I understand.

Honestly, I think this shows Nintendo's priorities going forward. They are putting Smash out for 3DS as they want to have a big tentpole release during the summer and trying to save the Wii U version for the Fall release to kind of have something to throw against MS and Sony going into the holiday season. They know the Wii U is going to stay where it is right now so they are putting more stock in getting sales for 3DS first as the best selling system, and taking the sales from Wii U as a bonus.

Never expected the situation to turn out this way...not very happy about it. The 3ds is not a place I ever was interested in playing Smash.

Oh well. Good luck Nintendo.

Also with Smash not being the centerpiece of the holiday lineup for this year it opens up the possibility of something else sliding in there. That excites me too since I had pretty much been resigned to Smash 3DS being the main 3DS game this holiday.

the post E3 fallout for Nintendo will be bad. we already have an idea of the 1st and 3rd party games coming to ps4 and x1 now, but after E3 I'm sure the amount will increase even more come fall/winter. most of these ps4 and x1 3rd party games, if not all, are not coming to Wii U. to even expect two games like Smash and Kart to carry the Wii U for 2014 is silly. Nintendo is sending the Wii U to die, it's as simple as that. software droughts, poor release dates, and no 3rd party in 2014 is too much for one console to handle two years in a row. regardless of if Zelda U is announced for Wii U this E3, the damage is done, non-Nintendo gamers are not even paying attention to the Wii U at retail anymore. Smash will just get lost in the holiday hype of ps4 and X1.

Nintendo likes making money, they need the 3DS version for that

it doesn't matter, the point is that for quite a decent portion of people, the 3DS version is enough
