Mario Golf: World Tour Review Thread

IGN - 8.6

You don’t have to be a hardcore golf fan to get hooked on Mario Golf: World Tour. It rewards good play, gives plenty to do, and is a great teacher. Its incremental approach to challenge kept me coming back to test myself, and the post-game challenges and multiplayer modes inspired me to play in new ways even after I thought I was a pro.

Destructoid - 8.5

It has been worth the wait, as Mario Golf: World Tour took that next step and brought us an outstanding online golf experience. The learning curve is steep, and there are some issues with the camera and aiming control, but working through them is worth it as the online play is outstanding.

Eurogamer - 8

he natural comparison is with Everybody's Golf - which, of course, developer Camelot was responsible for in the first instance - and while the Vita game has, by a distance, the superior single-player structure, World Tour is more than a match for it in the quality of its courses and the breadth of its options. Both play a great round of golf, because both are founded upon a game mechanic that is the Holy Grail of sports games: easy to learn, difficult to master, reliable enough to empower players while leaving room for the unpredictability of human error. Click, click, click, BOOM.

Metro - 8

The best Nintendo sports title for several years and although it offers little in terms of innovation it’s certainly not short of content or addictive fun.

GamesRadar - 4/5

Mario Golf: World Tour may lack innovation, but it provides easy-to-grasp golfing fun and a slew of unique stages. It's a solid game that will keep you coming back for more.

Gaming Age - B+

All things considered, Mario Golf: World Tour has a ton of content waiting to be unlocked. It seems that almost 70% of its courses are hidden behind completing single-player challenges in the Mario Gold mode, although they only feature 9 holes where Castle Club courses have a full 18 each. The recently-announced DLC and Season Pass also seems to offer a hefty expansion which will only add to the variety of courses and player choices (we did not have access to any of this additional content), in which case Nintendo seems intent on perpetuating the life of this Mario Golf entry in a much more comprehensive way than ever before. Not short on content, delivering a robust Mario Golf experience, and implementing the Mii character in the Castle Club mode lay down the groundwork for what could be the most complete Mario Golf experience so far. Whether or not that's your cup of 'tee' is up to you, but I've found a decent bit of distraction from my normal Hot Shots hold.

Edge - 6

This inability to decide where World Tour lies among the many paths the series has taken previously is the game’s true problem. It demonstrates both why Camelot is so trusted by Nintendo, and why it has been stuck making sporting spinoffs for so long. Camelot seems unsure of whether it would prefer to be held by the hand or simply set free, and ends up putting the player in that same awkward middle ground.

NintendoLife - no score yet (no online available at the time of reviewing)

Mario Golf: World Tour delivers, most notably right out of the box, a lengthy and involving experience. There is impressive depth not just in the level of content and diversity of options, but in the golf mechanics themselves; the catered options for beginners and stronger players are impeccably implemented. A minor quibble is that attempts at zaniness with items feel rather superfluous, while well-designed courses would have benefited from some less conventional designs. Aside from that, however, this is an excellent addition to the 3DS library, and offers a fresh experience from its contemporaries. Whether you want to settle in for a 15 minute blast around some challenges, or a longer spell carefully constructing a new record score, this satisfies either desire.
There's little doubt that this could be a long-tail game for 3DS owners. The core content and Mii customisation certainly delivers the fundamentals to deliver just that, something that regular online tournaments may, potentially, take to the next level.

some people in the OT seem to be on the fence so I figured a thread like this could help.

demo is out in NA btw. And it's great.

The hell is that supposed to mean? Not complaining about the review, just... what?

Hmm. Looks like its a pretty good game from the reviews. I've actually never played a Mario Golf game (or any of the sports titles). Is there a good one to start with, or one that a lot of people really like?

I'm gonna try out the demo here shortly.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
By the way, does this game have any CG movies?

I loved the Wario and Waluigi stuff the GCN Mario Tennis did, one of the greatest "plots" in any Mario game as far as I'm concerned.

the lack of more reviews is also due to the fact that some of these went up without testing the online features, which seem pretty important

The Gameboy Color version is on the 3DS VC and is a lot of fun. It's one of the best because it has an RPG mode where you can level up your golfer.

I was pretty indifferent about this, but the hype from today has me thinking I will buy it day 1.

Two points highlighted in the Destructoid review sold me pretty well: the game gets difficult, the online works well. Sounds like fun!

Decent reviews but that excerpt from Edge sounds really weird. Mario Golf has always been a mix of semi realistic golf courses and some zany Mario flare thrown in.

Such a lovely understandable review conclusion! Let me tweak it a little:

This inability to decide where World Tour's issues lie is the review’s true problem. It demonstrates both why Edge is so trusted by readers, and why it has been stuck making highbrow reviews for the sake of it for so long. The Edge reviewer seems unsure of whether he would prefer to be held by the usual review standards or simply set free, and ends up putting the reader in that same awkward middle ground.

there still ain't a rpg mode though :(

and new courses in a golf game is a bigger deal than tennis lol.

No RPG mode? Seriously? What about that Mii mode? And I know, Golf is much more course based than Tennis, it is just my inner tennis player fanboyism that would like more than the 3DS game offered.

that Mii mode (Castle Club) is sort of RPG-ish but very light. You don't level up but you cant unlock and buy gear and clothes for your Mii character.

Toadstool Tour on Cube had a similar great movie!

Not sure about this one. Honestly I doubt it.

CAN unlock you mean. Just clarifying. :p

"Mario Golf World Tour leaves you astonished from every point of view. The great amount of content, the tens of possibilities offered by the game modes and the perfect integration of RPG mechanics are only a part of what the game is. An exceptional work from a technical point of view will flavour our hours of carefree-ness, with an exceptional soundtrack and a graphical style with a definition that we thought wasn't possible on Nintendo's little handheld.

Camelot has once again proven itself as a perfect partner for Nintendo's consoles, creating not only real masterpieces in terms of gameplay, but also proving they're capable of exploiting the hardware's power. We're facing the title that every new 3DS' game has to get compared to from now on, from a technical point of view.

We challenge any of you to find a flaw in this little pearl Nintendo created."

It's still Camelot lol.

I want the punch out dudes back on sports. Striker wii is easily one of the best arcade sports games of the last decade.

Agree, and the GAF Tournament was great.

I'm disappointed that the RPG mode from the GBC game is still missing :(

How are people confused by what Edge is saying? Or are you just trying to slam then because of the score they gave it?

I wasn't confused, but within the context of a videogame review I felt that Edge's criticism of Camelot's relationship with Nintendo is completely out of place. In fact I read the entire review and it mostly flowery language with little in terms of an actual game critique.

Is the demo available for the North American eShop?

Also, what's the deal with this thread? It hasn't been updated with links or new reviews.

Demo was great! Day one for $29.99! Me and the friends will have some epic tournaments!

Does this game support like 3-4 players online?
