We think you’ll have a lot of fun playing DRIVECLUB once it launches on October 7th, digitally via the PlayStation store and on Blu-ray at your local retailer. If you’re an active PlayStation Plus subscriber and have been playing the PlayStation Plus Edition, but decide you want the full DRIVECLUB experience, you can purchase a one-time upgrade for $49.99. This will give you access to all five locations, 55 tracks, 50 cars and all 50 tour events, as long as your PlayStation Plus subscription remains active.

Very clearly explained in this video. Watch it if you're still doubtful. They clearly created this video whose sole purpose was to clarify the differences between the versions and got everything wrong, right?
Transcript from the part of the video that talks about the PS+ version and upgrade:

We give you the power to purchsae and play games on your own terms, with true freedom of choice:

Here's how:

THE NATURAL SELECTOR

You like to pick and choose what you want, upgrade and add on as you play. As an active Playstation Plus member you can enjoy DriveClub Playstation Plus edition, which comes with all game modes and a great selection of cars, tracks and locations for free.

If you want to upgrade in one single purchase than you can do that. Then you'll have access to all of the cars, tracks and locations and take all the points and trophies you've earned for your club with you.

You're the master of your own destiny.

As long as you're a Playstation Plus membership is active, you have the power.

After this part they talk about the retail version and full priced digital download having everything available.

Rushy editing posts back in February deleting posts regarding PS+ version.

Not sure if posted here but David Scammell on twitter pointed this out:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=79432909&postcount=1734

Notice anything different? "which doesn't require a PS+ subscription" was edited out by Rushy, in Feb.

This is a load of shit that sets a very bad precedent. It seems they're treating the upgrade as DLC, not the full game.

TLDR
  • "Upgrade" for PS+ version ($50) is treated as DLC, hence disappearing when your sub lapses.
  • Every other game bought with discount via PS+ is yours to keep, not requiring a PS+ sub.
  • Can buy the "Full" version for $60 on disc or digital, not locked to PS+.
  • No, game is not always online required.

This doesn't incent me to purchase a full version. This incents me to tell Sony to shove this game up their ass. I hope they reconsider.

Yuck. I hope a shitstorm brews over this so it doesn't become common practice.

I think there's just an error in conveying the information. No way should you lose the game once you;ve paid the price.

Thanks for the new thread.

This needs massive clarification but as of now, its as official as it can be. It's disgusting to expect people to pay $50 and lose that game.

Its disgusting because a lot of people are going to get the PS+ edition, see the "$50 upgrade" and think its a great deal. A lot of people don't read the fine prints and this is poor display of ethics by Evolution. A lot of people will get suckered in to this shit.

Yup it must be an error in communication. I don't lose the games I bought on a Plus sale and this should be no different.

As I said in the other thread, games as a service is here at last. Sony will say anything and do anything to keep you tethered to Plus. I suspect all Plus discounts follow.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Yeah. I can't accept this. It makes zero sense. I need more clarification. Even if I get it though, if it's the same news, I probably still won't be able to accept it.

As I said in the other thread this is just batshit, crazy, insanity. It's beyond baffling why anyone and I mean anyone on the face of this planet would think this was a good idea. I'm not buying the game at all now. I won't support scummy practices like this and by giving that game my money I would be.

I expected 40€, but okay. As already stated, you lose access to any bought DLC for a PS+ game as soon as your sub expires, so nothing to see here really.

EDIT: Considering it's sold as a DLC. If it's a full game upgrade then you should not lose access.

Yeah doesn't this just seem a bit confused chatter in relation to the PS+ version, and not the full version, given he only specifically mentions the PS+ version. If you have the PS+ version you can upgrade to the Full Version, so that would no longer be referred to as the PS+ version; seems just bad messaging/confusion

Strike that, I must've overlooked the last sentence - OUCH! I'm purchasing the full version from the getgo, but that sucks so badly.

Will pay $60 day one instead, thank you very much.

I don't see a problem with this as long as they make sure it is public and very much known of everybody. If they tried to hide this it would be disgusting tho.

It's weird that this doesn't follow the rule of other PS+ discounts.

Yup it must be an error in communication. I don't lose the games I bought on a Plus sale and this should be no different.

In this case you're not buying a discounted game, you're buying an add-on for a plus game.

Reading the comment again makes me think this is an error in communication that will probably be fixed before the game comes out.

Why the fuck would paying $50 to buy the full version of the game be tied to your Plus account? Are they really so cheap that they can't bear to give up the extra $10 without some sort of penalty? I don't remember other PS+ discounts having this stipulation.

So much for Sony not trying to degrade PS+ once it became mandatory. -_-

Watch the video. They explain what they're doing very clearly. It seems they're trying to treat the "upgrade" as DLC, not a full purchase.

Nothing! I said nothing!

Might be jumping the gun a bit. No indication they will do this for other games.

They would have been better never mentioning a PS+ version of this game. It's caused nothing but bother.

I agree with this guy. The alternative seems crazy and counterproductive for Sony.

If that's the case, then $10 discount is just not worth it. I would just fork over the extra $10 just to have the game even if my PS+ expires.

There is a thread already for the new info but I think it's worth it's own thread to discuss this because it's some grade A bullshit

Seriously maybe half that for a long-term rental in an upgrade capacity. Even then it's still crap

I mean for $50 you can get a year of PS+ at retail pricing and get all those games in the same "free" way

This is crap

Yup, this is sick. It probably also breaks laws in that bastion of consumer protection, the EU. Fix it, @yosp.
