Borderlands 2 Vita |OT| 870 gajillion guns in your pockets

So, seeing as how reviews are nowhere in sight, I guess I'll just ask those of you who have it; is it worth picking up as more than just a novelty? Does it feel like it belongs on the Vita? I'm having a hard time telling if I'd want to play this as a replacement to the PS3 version or not.

It really is worth getting. It's like having the full console game portable. It's really freaking impressive.

So yeah, how much is the game gonna cost?

Sorry I only read the first page and the last and didnt see any mention of it.

Probably $40US, maybe $30, but that's unlikely.
Even at $40, that's the cost of the included DLC on the normal versions.

Get it, great on Vita and worth the money I think, you will use your Vita for days or weeks. hehe Sometimes I just stop just to see how good the game looks and smile at the fact that I am playing it on my Vita, no bullshit. Oh and another thing, the enemy count is just fine, these mother fuckers be everywhere.

It's pretty good, however the frame rate has a real tendency to go to shit during boss battles (and walking around in Sanctuary).

Thanks for the input guys! I guess I'll wait and grab it tuesday. One more question; has anyone tried coop? Does it run pretty smoothly? I'd love to hop on and play with some of you guys.

Tried co op today, was smooth, there were no problems, it ran perfectly. You do know the multiplayer is 2 only right?

Yeah, I do. It's a bit of a letdown, but I usually only played the PS3 version with one other person at a time anyways.

Have to say, I was uber-skeptical of this at first. An Unreal Engine 3 game that pushes the PS360 to their limits...on a Vita? (In native res, even?!) Crazy talk. But somehow, Iron Galaxy seem to have pulled it off, at least from what I've read here. The lack of reviews is odd (does the embargo only lift after the game's standalone release next week?), but I feel confident enough in GAF's collective impression of it. Preordered!

Screenshots work, unfortunately they look like crap on anything other than a vita for some reason.

The Vita compresses the hell out of its screenshots. One of my most-requested features in a future firmware update is the ability to take screenshots in a lossless format like PNG.

People can't mod their saves, can they? For some reason, I stopped caring for online when I learned people modding their saves and dropping godly loot. Thankfully I had my brother to play with so the experience stayed fun. That was for Borderlands 1, though. If anyone can confirm modding saves doesn't exist, I'll probably have to buy this game.

They can potentially convert their PC saves into PS3 saves and then import that into the Vita version.

Nah. It's only native when standing still for PR screenshot's purposes :p
Whenever you move it incrementally drops the horizontal resolution

Guerriglia Cambridge:

""The engine supports native resolution and lower (quarter) resolution rendering for fill-rate heavy items such as particles. Dynamic resolution scaling is supported for the main scene, reducing the horizontal resolution incrementally. However, it has no effect on the lower-resolution rendering or post-processing systems," clarifies Aldridge.

"It is our belief that players are less likely to notice the temporal effects of the resolution reduction when they are in motion (indeed, many of those effects are likely to be shorter-lived if one is moving through the scene). When static, compromises to image quality are likely to be much more noticeable than frame-rate drops - particularly in screenshots," Matt Porter says with a smile.

Pretty huge difference.

But hey, don't want to derail the thread, personally I think this is the FPS most suited to portable play, yeah it's late but I think it's a smart pick and it'd be cool if BL3 was also going to come out on Vita.

Just to clarify there,
The game incrementally adjusts the horizontal resolution when the GPU is bottlenecking the framerate and the screen is changing a lot (eg, you are moving).
Even at it's lowest horizontal res, it's still the a similar number of pixels to most vita games (still with 4xaa)

In typical gameplay it's native ~ 95% of the time. The screenshots you have posted (which are really heavily compressed - and not even 960x544?) are from one of the worst parts of the game, performance wise. Large particle effect, full screen shadowing dynamic light, fairly complex materials (reflections, etc) *and* a giant window covering the view. It may look like a simple scene but it's actually a terrible case for a mobile GPU :p

Just thought I'd clarify :)

So I'm looking at some of these screen shots on my 5c screen, and I JUST played BL2 on PS3 for about an hour. I don't really see a big difference. I hope my eyes continue to see things this way come Tuesday.

I swear that this port looks better than the PS3 version to me at times. Native res really makes a huge difference.

Geez, Sanctuary drops like crazy. If I had to guess, I'd say that it's worse than the PS3 version (although I should note that I've only watched some friends play it a few times and haven't actually played the PS3 version myself). Definitely nowhere near 25-30 fps, more like 15 at its worst (which happened to be in Roland's HQ if anyone wants to test).

On another topic, I was thinking that the whole exploding enemy thing would bother me, but I actually don't mind it. It's pretty satisfying to whack someone in the face or snipe them from across the map and watch them explode in a burst of red.

The one thing that has me kind of peeved is that DLC weapons from packs not included won't be useable. Some of my best weapons are from the DLC, as is my favorite grenade (an electric spell one from Tiny Tina's).

The devs had said the plan is to have the remaining missing DLC coming out for Vita.

Not sure what you want them to do about your situation exactly.

I'm going to be starting from scratch as I don't want to bother with translating PC game saves to PS3 and then waiting for whenever they decide to patch cross-save.

I'm going to just be starting from scratch... full-stop! I never actually completed Borderlands 1 for 360 y'know. I may have to attempt that at some point.

That's just as my exams are over, so it's actually good. But damn, for people who have nothing to do this month... that's harsh.

Was wondering how this will turn out. Have it on PC but stopped after about 17 hours. Not because I didn't like it but because of how my PC was set up at the time. Plus as soon as I heard a vita port was in the mix I was Kean to see how it will turn out as these types of games suit the system really well.

So hearing it turned out pretty reasonable I decided to get it but have to wait till 23rd. Would normally get digitally but seeing as its a huge file size I checked amazon and they have it for £22.50. Still need like 2 gig for the dlc but I can free that up if needed So I ordered it. Should be fun. Will prob play it on lunch breaks for the most part.

Read the above posts :'( Also, just a heads up but ShopTo have it for £19.50

You play the Vita without any sort of gaming grip on it? The original Vita? I can't seem to do that. It makes my hands hurt after awhile even when I don't have to worry about the back touch panel.

I play my OG Vita without a grip and I didn't have any problems. I haven't played most back-pad extensive games iirc though.

The assumed 3-4 enemy limit is something I've only experienced in very open areas. And they seem to compensate for this by very quick spawns of reinforcements, so the wave of enemies is pretty consistent.

In certain areas it is MUCH higher. I did the assassin's quest in Southpaw Steam & Power and there were times when 6-9 enemies were simultaneously on radar and attacking.

It all seems to depend on what area you are in. After another full night of playing in several areas I really don't see the enemy count as an issue.

Odd question, but has anyone heard any of the enemies do the Hamlet soliloquy in the Vita version?

I haven't. I also didn't notice the Merchant of Venice reference. Would be a bummer if they got cut somehow, these were one of my favourite cultural references in Borderlands 2.

I don't know where all you guys heard this. The only mention of the other DLC I ever heard from them was "we'll see how the game sells and if it will be worth it", can't find where they said that they're definitely planning to bring it over.

I don't expect them to do anything, but it'd be nice to not have half my inventory be unuseable.

Most recently, they answered that to someone on the PS Blog post about the new 2000 model.

Also, it's "the plan". It's not guaranteed. They never said it's guaranteed. Of course it'll depend on the sales. But we're VitaGAF, the optimists.

I hope so. I'd love Tiny Tina's DLC in the go, it's the best one, hands down.

are the DLCs cross-buy with the PS3 version?

We don't know yet. The game comes with 6 dlc for free. The rest of the dlc hasn't been ported over.

Edit: For any interested in DLC quality, here is the defacto list;

Tiny Tina> Captain Scarlet> Torque> The Hunt DLC's> Costume DLC> Shift Keys> DLC for a game you don't have> Sir Hammerlock.

This is the first Vita game in over a year that I just can't put down.

It's a 1:1 port of the console versions, aside from the framerate drops. It can get bad during boss fights, but fortunately I'm playing as Axton so I just drop a turret to do the killing for me. :D

All the Vita bundles sold out at my GameStop in downtown Chicago so I think the game is off to a great start - hopefully the numbers will compel them to port over the remaining DLC.

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
Wait what, I thought it had reduced enemies.

That's a pretty major change that definitely makes it very far from being a "1:1 port".
IIRC in this thread some people said that the number of enemies is the same, they just appear in more waves of less enemies and they do more damage, so it's still balanced.

Enjoying this game a lot! Don't know a lot of Vita players who own this for co-op, but I can still enjoy playing on the go solo. :)

The game feels great and really does feel like BL2 has been reproduced on Vita. The only complaint, which is a silly one, is cross-co-op between Vita and PS3. Other games are spoiling me on this! :D

Wonder how my badass rank will morph, but I truly didn't do too much on PS3. I do want it to be reflected on both correctly. Will find out when patch comes what happens to your badass rank.

It would be amazing if Gearbox patched the PS3 version with a "Vita Mode" setting that would basically allow it to crossplay 2 player co-op with a Vita player.

It was a Sony employee, not one of the devs. In interviews, they've pretty much said that they don't plan to, yet.
