NPD Sales Results for April 2014 [Up2: XB1/360 hardware, PS4 #1/XB1 #2 best selling]

A 75k gap (roughly) is large regardless of how much they both sell in the end. Also worth mentioning is that out of 9 years, the 360 in the US sold above 200k in April 3 times. That's the 360 in the US.

Huh, the roles have certainly been reversed there since last gen.

Can someone explain the Infamous situation? Best selling despite not charting at all?

Apparently its the best selling next gen game this month which means it beat Titanfall on XB1. But since the 99% of top ten are games with combined skus (except minecraft cuz its minecraft) it didn't make the chart.

Exactly.

Sure, all hope is lost for it to make a recovery in the west. But I've come to terms with it and am fine with the zombie-like state it is in now, getting lots of indie support and japanese localizations.
As long as Vita owners keep propping up that attach rate by buying everything that releases on it.

And yet, the Vita is getting a ton of English localizations of niche Japanese games, quite possibly more than any other system at the moment. Even if the hardware is bombing, somebody's buying games for the system.

Yeah, they keep supporting it because pretty much everyone who buys one fucking loves it and gets a bunch of games for it. It's a niche product, but they're getting a bunch of money out of that niche.

Infamous SS didn't chart? What the hell are the PS4 users playing? Twitch Plays Pokemon?
I bought it, played through it 3 times and now I'm done with it. It was incredibly short. I wish there was more I could do (besides take a bunch of beautiful pictures) but it's not a game with legs. Plus, the DLC has a good chance of being standalone so less reason to hold on to it.

Yes: Other gamers are several platforms combined.
inFAMOUS is just one platform.

They combine all the multiplatform SKUs for the top ten, so an exclusive game has a much harder time to chart.

They spun it to next gen only.

Wasn't released on 360

Best selling next-gen game on its own not able to chart NPD Top 10 yet this month.

Also btw, Infamous : SS sold over 1,000,000 and is the best selling of the series. So, it did very well for Sucker Punch.

Best selling next gen game.
The only game charting alone is Minecraft X360, NPD charts puts all versions of same game together.

It's only the best selling when you separate SKUs and ignore all 360/PS3/etc software and just count next-gen.

Got it, wasn't clued in on the single SKU vs. multi-plat at first glance. Thanks!

Wii U is lacking

Ooops that was bad. I hope WiiU didnt fall off the charts completely. Either way, PS3+PS4 combined could be in the ~230K mark.

Xbone 115K@$500 - $57.5M
360 71K@$250 - $17.75M
3DS/XL 100K@$175 - $17.5M
WiiU 45K@$300 - $13.5M
PS3 50K@$250 - $12.5
Vita 15K@$200 - $3M
PS4 400 180K@400 - $72M
Total $192M

Easy, it can be platinumed in literally days. Its very short.

Word on the street is it can be rented and fully experienced within a week, two tops. And won't need to be touched again.

Word of mouth spreads. Its too short and slim on content.

The interested consumer in dedicated gaming devices is contracting, more so than I thought would ever occur.

We should all be worried, not so much about the death of the industry, but rather further contraction of the industry or further deviations away from dedicated devices.

This is a bummer. :/

I need the 64GB card to come out here ;_;

I've heard the same thing from a lot of NA Vita owners. That really needs to happen ASAP. I was lucky that I found a local seller in my country, because I don't think the 64GB memory card was officially released here. Have you tried ordering online?

And another thing. Sony better release a Vita bundled with Minecraft once it's out. The game's insanely popular and with how it's shaping up to be the definitive portable version, it might just sell a ton.

It's a perfect console for smaller games too. All in all I've probably bought something like 40+ games (along with all the PS+ freebies) and I've only had it for a year and a half. I love the Vita.

I talk to a lot of people at work. And A LOT of people haven't upgraded yet. They are still waiting.

In fact: The majority of the people haven't upgraded.

Sony hasn't won this gen yet.

They need games. Good games. And they need them YESTERDAY!

Well, those are all the facts I need, if people at your work say it, and "A LOT' of people at your work are saying it, then it must be true. PS4 has no games. I was playing all kinds of these things on my PS4 I thought were games. MLB The Show is the most recent, but since it is the digital rendition of a sports "game" that people play in real life, I bet it isn't a game!

Come On Proponent!!! Get real brother!

What they need to dump is the price or, better yet, the proprietary memory cards. I'd say a PS4/PSV bundled set for the holidays would do wonders as well.
I don't think it's the price. I think it's a combination of other things, including the 3DS being a better designed portable device (it folds up to protect the screens for a start), the games, and the fact that smartphones and tablets have eaten into the market. Nintendo handhelds also sell extremely well to younger gamers (i.e. kids). I don't think bundling a PS4 and Vita together would do anything noticeable for sales, as I reckon people would just buy a PS4 bundled with a game or two instead.

There's a reason why Sony has lowered Vita, PSP and Vita TV shipment forecasts to just 3.5 million combined worldwide for the next financial year.

Yeah, like in November.

For a short month and without any big releases... outselling the direct competition nearly 2.1..... yes, it is really good.

I'd say it's ok numbers. I expected about 290k for PS4 since they fixed the demand issue but it looks like they met demand and things are "normal" now. Still not that good for a new console. 360 was 295k in the same april and time frame.

All the things on the chart are multiplatform games that sold more across all platforms combined than Infamous did. None of those games sold more on PS4 or XBone than Infamous did (presumably the bulk of their sales were on last-gen consoles.)

For a forum that promotes itself as being as smart as NeoGAF does, I'm surprised to see these "Kill Vita" comments. SCEA killed the platform on February 20th, 2013. Everything they've announced since then had a noticeable lack of money put behind it. SCEA hasn't advertised the platform since 2012. Remote Play and PlayStation Now are there to fill in the gaps caused by their software investment in the platform dwindling to just indie games and shoddily made ports. That's an exit strategy out of the handheld business, but they can't afford to just kill it off officially. If they do that, they stand to sour a userbase likely made out of their most loyal fans. Worse off, if they discontinue Vita they'll piss off a good amount of Japanese publishers as the platform is relevant over there. Given PS4 is currently underselling Wii U, Vita, and PS3 in Japan, Sony really can't afford to do that. So instead you'll see the hardware languish on store shelves until enough time has passed for Sony to pull the plug. Then they'll use their "consolation prize" of Remote Play and PlayStation Now as their mobile strategy.

Overall retail sales up 17% year over year.

Hardware up 76% year over year.

The 360 was also the only next gen console on the market at the time.

Also, on the subject of this, I'm a PS4 owner and I didn't buy InFamous. No interest in open-world style games. I haven't bought any games since launch and probably won't for a while (though I'm interested in getting TowerFall and Strider on PSN once my backlog clears). I realize I'm probably not necessarily the typical PS4 user though. I haven't turned my console on in months.

Lol what!? Only thing i have seen you do is use the weak, ps4 has no games argument when that is completely false, and using anecdotal evidence.

But why announce it and essentially forfeit a good chunk of sales in May? Why not wait until E3 to announce it? This whole situation has been weird.

Probably so they can market it like crazy and get a big enough June number to maybe
probably not but be close
beat the PS4

The 360 was a masterpiece though, I don't think we'll see something like it again for a long time.

Yeah, but the X360 didn't sell over 7 mio. after a few months. So these PS4 numbers for a "short" April without any big releases are good :)

Took me 17 days to platinum it, but then again, I don't play every day, and when I did play it was about 3 hours per evening.

It's a shame Microsoft couldn't get the $400 sku out sooner. It's gonna be a rough May for sure.

June should be interesting.

But the Titanfall SKU was $450, wasn't it?

I guess the casual consumer will bite on a $399 price tag based on perception alone, but it really isn't much of a deal when compared to the TF bundle.
