New Steam Home Streaming is AMAZING !!!

Now what I want is a computer that is *JUST* powerful enough to run oculus rift and stream, then I can play in bed, lying down, looking up into my oculus. I'll never had to leave the bedroom.

Tried this yesterday and not many of the games I tried were working :/
I guess it'll get better, but most games either crashed or only started on the client PC when trying to stream to my 2013 MBA 11".

This is fucking sick... is there a way to use a PS4 controller to a Mac??

Yes, I'd like to know this as well. I have a MacBook with a retina display.

In-home Streaming has a little hidden feature that's never mentioned, but once in an beta update log, but is a god-send: X-input emulation for all streaming titles.

Just plug the DS4 into any OSX machine and it'll be as if you just plugged a 360 controller into a windows machine. Entirely plug-n-play.

"responsive enough" doesn't sound very responsive tbh - these services will only become interesting if they provide the exact same level of responsiveness I have on my desktop pc, if you ask me. I'm not willing to make any sacrifices in this departement, especially not for just a little more comfort.

Just a little more comfort? What exactly are the use cases you're under the impression people are using with streaming? To look in a different direction in the same room?

can't seem to get my PCs too see each other :c

Are both on the same router, and signed into the same Steam account?

It HAS to be the same router too. If it's anything like a router-to-switch setup like I had, it won't see anything plugged into the switch, if the host is plugged directly into the initial router.

I love Pokken!
Just tried Dark Souls II and Metal Gear Rising in my 3 year old laptop and it runs soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good.

Kudos to Valve.

If this runs well I think I might build a HTPC to stream games from my gaming pc. For now I'll just plug in my laptop to my TV though.

Wonder if we would see a ps4/xbox one app for this from valve. Though due to steam os i doubt it.

That would be awesome but is there any way MS or Sony would allow this? It would cannibalize their software sales by encouraging people to purchase software on Steam as opposed to their own proprietary platforms.

I would imagine that they can approach it like they do other video streaming services. For example, on an Xbox you can stream any of your Amazon Video library just fine (even if it partially competes with Xbox Video), but you can't make purchases from directly in the Amazon app. And on PS3, you can buy videos from directly within the Amazon app there, even if that technically competes with Sony's services.

And of course, a streaming app on the console still means you're technically within the Xbox/PSN ecosystem, which I don't think they would be against.

So I can expect an Android app relatively soon?

*is optimistic*

Might give my Ouya a new lease of life.

You can use an app called Limelight to stream Steam games to an Android tablet. I used it with my cousins Asus Transformer and it worked fluidly. You have the option of streaming over 720/30fps,60fps or 1080p/30/60fps. 720p/60fps worked the best but the only issue is it doesn't work with non steam games I believe. Limelight only works with PC's equipped with Nvidia Geforce cards.
I then used Splashtop THD(works with Tegra tablets) and that worked even better. I could remotely control the whole desktop and emulators like PCSx2 worked fine. My cousin played Persona 4 through that in Boston while his PC was in NJ.

I didn't have a good experience with it streaming from my windows 8.1 desktop to my Ubuntu laptop (wired connection). Wonder if it works better streaming to a windows OS.

Yeah that makes sense, it is an interesting question. I feel like games may be where they draw the line, being that they do not make their profits on the hardware but the software sales (traditionally). That being said, if it were put behind a pay wall, Live or Plus, perhaps it could be beneficial to have people within the ecosystem. More than anything, I feel this speaks volumes concerning Valve's vision in creating Steam over a decade ago. Awesome to see its evolution from my day's being incredibly frustrated with its instability and forcing me to use it for the newest CS revs!

Quick question about the home computer you are streaming from.

Does the game display on the home monitor while you are playing it? What I mean is, is it like when you play New Super Mario Bros. Wii U, you can look at either the tv or the tablet controller and the same thing is happening on both? Or are you able to run games minimized on the home monitor?

Its a bummer that the tablet has to have its own copy of the game installed. The DVP8 has an itty bitty hd.

You have mis understood....all you need is steam...the host machine has to have the game installed. Not the receiving device

You can't use the home computer while the game is running unfortunately.

So the game will "run on my desktop" but I can play it on my laptop as if it were the monitor / keyboard hooked up to the computer? That is pretty sweet. If I could do this for Wildstar!

played more MGR on my laptop using the streaming, i don't know if is because my internet is really shit this days but sometimes i noticed an excessive amount of screen tearing, and the game seems to run on 30-40 fps while on my PC is solid 60.

Control response is excellent though.

Well they're both connected to the same home network/router in the sense that my host/desktop PC is connected directly via powerline adapter, and the laptop I'm streaming to is connected via WiFi.

Both are running Steam and I'm logged in with the same account on each machine, but neither show up under in-home streaming. The weird part is, on the laptop if I exit steam and restart it, I will see it on the desktop as "not connected." However, restarting Steam on my desktop does not make it visible on the laptop, even as not connected.

I tried using big picture and restarting my machines, but no luck so far.

edit: derp re-read your comment, but yeah even when I connect my host/desktop via WiFi to the same router as the laptop, I get the same results.
double edit: made sure ports were open, etc. no luck - this whole thing is turning me sour

If true, this is amazing. Time to play Mirror's Edge in bed on my MacBook Air!

Its true!

And person who said Router + Switches is a no go, my host machine passes through a Billion 7800N router and 2 Netgear GS105 Gigabit switches to a Server which i streamed games too perfectly.

The fact that Valve isn't developing apps for other devices and mobiles to stream this content is quite frustrating considering it's a no brainier.

Weird. Maybe it was my particular switch.

I could've sworn that out prompted me to install a copy when I tried it out. Will investigate further. Thanks

If you log into Steam on your second computer/tablet and it recognises the host PC being logged into Steam also, you'll see the exact same installed games on your host PC and instead of a play button, you'll see a "Stream" button instead.

My FireTV is dying to use this.

Cheap, native controller support (360, DS3/4, Amazon controller all supported out of the box), capable of decoding H.264, already connected to your TV.

Just give us an Android/ARM compatible app and let us push the apk ourselves.

Wow. Just streamed to my Intel Atom HTPC. Worked amazingly. Played Metal Gear Revengeance which is obviously very fast paced. Was crystal clear.

HTPC: Wired Gigabit
PC: Wireless N
Wireless distance to router: ~25 feet
Notes: Slight obstruction through wall/bay door

works really good, tomb raider seemed kinda laggy, and i could see it on the hdtv was smooth. but critter crunch was fantastic hardly any latency on that. too be expected i guess ( heavy 3d versus all 2d) hope it can improve. its cool that it doesnt make my laptop hot while streaming, which is one of my pet peeves of using my laptop for games as it has an ok for laptop gpu. it was nice testing a new feature and it just works well right away.

I tried on both a laptop of mine and an older desktop I use as an HTPC. It seems to not run so well on the older desktop, there must be some hardware limitations on the clientside there.

Yeah it's great. You can also stream non-Steam games and programs like emulators.
Also with the lag, maybe try leaving your controller connected to the host computer it still works like that.
