Watch_Dogs PC performance thread [Read post #1215 before posting]

1080p, 680 2GB@1240MHz, 8GB RAM, Win 7.

i7 4770K@3,6GHz
Code:
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
  5449, 118296, 10, 54, 46.062

@4,3GHz
Code:
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
  5062, 108389, 20, 55, 46.702

Reloaded checkpoint and took the exact same route both times, half the time was running and half the time was driving.

This was played at daytime with these settings.

The lowest fps was from stuttering, might be because of low VRAM or that the engine just needs some more work and a new graphics driver. Overall I would say it pretty much identical in both runs. If Asus Suite would let me disable hyperthreading without restarting the PC I would give that a try as well, but I'll leave that to someone else.

Thanks!

Very interesting. I wonder what this means?

This looks totally stunning. But for some reasons, I can't believe it'll actually look this good when playing the game

That I am GPU limited at those settings no matter what clockspeed on the CPU. So none of those settings benefited from a faster CPU in that scenario.

If someone could try the same with an i5 at stock and ~4,5GHz we could see if the results are the same. Maybe higher clockspeed is better when you only have 4 threads instead of 8.

i5-4670k @ 4.4
780 @ 1226 core (337.50)
8GB DDR3 @ CL9/1800MHz
pagefile on SSD, game installed on HDD

I am running the game in 1080p, 2xMSAA, HBAO+ low and everything rest maxed out (including ultra textures)

Game runes decent indoors, 60+ fps. However, it gets painful outdoors where it dips to 30-40 when driving fast and microstutters A LOT. I've tried high textures but no change.

I got fed up in the end and just stuck everything on high, including textures. I get a solid 60-80fps and no stutter while driving.

Another trick is to add -disablepagefilecheck to the shortcut , although I can't vouch that was the cure.

VRAM plays no part in how this game runs. I have a 6GB Titan ffs ...still won't get me ultra textures.

Very intersting, thanks for sharing. Bit strange the OC didn't have any real effect on the performance.

I don't know how it is for Watch Dogs, but for GTA4 I just turn on the normal ingame v-sync, it works fine.

Yeah forgot to switch it on in game, that's better.

What's everyone opinion on 1080 @ 30fps on ultra everything maxed v 1080 @ 60fps (slight dips) medium high settings.

Personally 60fps looks so good it's difficult and painful to revert to 30

Guys, did they get rid of the POM on the cobble stone roads?
Yes. I guess the power modern PCs have was still not enough for Ubisoft.

I have an i5 3570k @ 3.4 GHz and have never OC'd it. Anybody know if it needs to be OC'd to run this game decently?

I really doubt it'll make a difference. That CPU should be fine for any game. The game doesn't even use all threads/cores properly on many machines.

Anyone else have this blurry effect when enabling MSAA? Don't ask why the screen has this orange filter on it. Fraps captured it like that.

Specs:
Intel i5 4670K @ 3.40GHz
8GB DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 7970 Twin Frozr OC BE

Apparently it's a combination of Motion Blur and MSAA

Try disabling one of the two and see if it goes away.

I'm still waiting for the first true current gen game to come about and tell us where we should aim, round about.

I guess October's Evolve will be the earliest current gen exclusive title?

Here's a little tip. If you believe you are having cpu issues and want a cpu boost of 25%, go to task manager and look for a process called winlogin.exe (not winlogon.exe) and disable it as it takes resources away from watch_doges. If you are unsure let us know in this thread and post a screenshot of your processes and I am sure there are those in red who will help you out. If you do not have winlogin.exe then you can pass go and collect $200 :)

Is this trick ( http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=389072 ) a different one to the above shortcut 'coding' in terms of what it does for game performance?

For anyone wondering, Bokeh dof is still in the game. I just wish it was used more.
Interesting. The only times I've noticed it is during cutscenes, when you activate scanning with your phone, when you aim with your gun, and when you use an ATM. Some of these screens appear to be just Aiden standing around... I've never seen DOF appear like this... what did you do to make it happen?

FX-6300 OC
R7 260x OC
8GB RAM
1600x900

Everything in Ultra except for textures in high, SSAO and temporal SMAA, it runs fine 30-40fps but drops to 25fps when driving in certain parts of the city, also in the first load vram fills up to 1900+ but after playing a while it stays between 1600-1700.

It happens when you bring up the phone. He has probably edited so the other effects don't happen when he bring it up.

I don't agree with this, but I understand why people might think it's the case.

I worked for an Ubisoft studio (Red Storm) for years. Everyone was incredibly professional and passionate and worked every day to create their best work, even if they were just working on a small portion of the final product. Their reputation (even if just inside the studio/company) rode on it. Additionally, the roles they filled (UI/lighting/animation/concept art/etc.) are what they were passionate about and the reason they got the job in the first place.

I honestly never got the idea that anyone was just doing it for the paycheck. The situation may be in different in other Ubi studios around the world, but we often had people transferring back and forth between them and I really saw no sign of complacency. You have to care at least minimally about the end product – gaming is a volatile business and your studio/role could be shut down if the game's performance is subpar. It's not like Ubi doesn't know or care when their reputation takes a hit or XYZ role could have been done better.

Ok, thanks for explaining this too me. I apologize if I offended anyone who works there. I shouldn't have assumed they weren't passionate about their work. Right now I'm just kind of angry that I paid for something that doesn't run at good performance despite me having above the recommended specs.

Summary for those who think on playing on PC:

- Expect it to run generally really bad.
- Expect keeping textures at "high" if you have 2/3Gb video memory. High + AA may even surpass 2Gb.
- Expect the number of core/threads mattering far more than your videocard or frequency clock.
What are you basing that last point on (other than Ubi's misleading passmark comment)?

Has anyone done comparisons? Skimming through the thread, it doesn't seem like i5's are being pissbeaten all that badly by i7's.

I do and its on a AMD 7770. Not sure why this happens though. I did notice that if i change my setting alot during the game, the studdering gets bad, forcing me to restart the game to get rid of the studdering. Im guessing people who are getting all the studdering are the ones that changed thier settings during the game alot.

i5 4670k + Asus 7970 =

45-60 FPS normally
30-40 FPS driving

Everything ultra + Temporal SMAA + FXAA on top with Radeon Pro at 1080p

At PS4 settings I'm getting 60ish FPS almost constantly except when driving down a large space to load.

Related in the case you plan an upgrade:
"The i7-4790K will launch with a clock speed of 4.00 GHz and a Turbo Boost frequency of 4.40 GHz."

But not until September.

I'm hoping with my setup, 3770k@4.4GHz, 16GB, 3 Titans on a LG 34UM95 display (3440x1440) I should be able to run this with all settings on high and still get ~60FPS.

You should.

The Nvidia drivers that they released for GW2 chinese release fixed all my fps problems (running on an 3570K, 16GB, SLI GTX670). Everything's smooth here running max settings except textures at high, shadows high.
