E3 2014 | Nintendo Digital Event

It had the polished sheen, it had the colour screens
It was the best damn Zelda that I've ever seen
It's got the P-star highs, the salty fan cries
Bayonetta 2 with those kick ass thighs
Painty squid patrol, gyroscope controls
Captain Toad, they're fucking on a roll,
Then the mechs start shootin, X is rootin tootin
They'd already won but they just put the boot in

Wii U shook me aaaaaaaaall niiiiiight looooooooong
Wii U shook me aaaaaaaaall niiiiiight looooooooong

They're working double time on that new toy line
Smash Bros looking so incredibly fine
Wanted no applause, dropping bombs galore
"Everyone, our show just kicked the shit out of yours!"
Still got some shit to show, from Mr Miyamoto
"Hey kids, Star Fox U is a go-go-go!"
The floor feels unsteady, E3 got heady
My poor old body just wasn't ready

Wii U shook me aaaaaaaall niiiiiiiiight looooooooong
Wii U shook me aaaaaaaall niiiiiiiight looooooooong

So it begins.

Never ended up posting in this thread, but I have to say Nintendo totally killed E3. Even hours AFTER the Digital Event was done I was still finding new things. It's been an amazing day and I'm very excited for the Wii U's future.

I think what you fail to understand is that many people are still Nintendo fans because they enjoy solid mechanics and stellar game design. It's not they love everything Nintendo, because... Nintendo! I'll take a Nintendo developed 2D platformer over everything I've seen yesterday any day regardless of artstyle. And I find it kind of funny to describe Nintendo as "in a bubble", because that's how I felt watching the conferences yesterday. Yes, AssCreed/Uncharted/Cod have "mature" artstyles, but they were never great games from a gameplay perspective. It's the same boring, focus testet shit we've seen over the past generation and I'm tired of it.

If you need gritty themes to enjoy a game and can't look past the appearence I feel truely sorry for you. grow the fuck up.

Well I had to deal with insults in pretty much every answer to that post, but I'll be the bigger man and not answer in the same language.

Nobody said that Nintendo needs to drop the games that make Nintendo what it is.
I wrote that they need to make 3rd parties a core focus of their strategy. For 3 whole generations they have not done that.

If you actually bothered to check my post history in this thread you'd seen that in the very first post I wrote "Am I seeing things? Is Nintendo actually winning E3?", followed by my review of the "conference" in which I said they showed a tremendously strong 1st party line-up and it only failed in not securing 3rd party support. I gave it the 2nd highest score of E3.

But after everything was said and done, Nintendo didn't show me anything that said "go buy our system".
I saw the same old IP's on a new skin. Most of them with the same gameplay they've always had.
I saw nothing saying I'd have a better experience playing "Y game" on Wii U.

I know you've wrote that I need to "grow up". But the thing is, I did. I don't play with dolls anymore. I don't play catch anymore. I don't play cops and robbers anymore. I don't play games aimed at 6 years old anymore.

If you do, well then, the more power to you. But I'm 25 years old and my tastes match my age. It's the reason why Sony is and most likely will always be my favorite.

Nintendo is aimed at kids.
Microsoft aimed at teens.
Sony aimed at adults.

There are exceptions though and all three have them, but for the most part this is true.

And no manchild will tell me otherwise no matter how much insults they have to throw at me.

Yes, Nintendo games are usually the cream of the crop. And yes, they don't move systems.

You said Uncharted was not a great game? Well I'm sorry to say that Uncharted is one of the 3 games that defined the previous generation. The other two being call of duty modern warfare and gears of war.

So you want MEtroid to be like CoD or Halo

You know, 1st person perspective and shooting doesnt equal=ULTRA POPULAR MULTIPLAYER SHOOTER PEWPEWPEW

You would ruin Metroid

And you've "grown" up from Yoshi now. Games for kids aren't for you....
smh

such a shitty post

I wrote it could big like them. Not that it had to be like them.

FFS people, use your fucking brain. Stop treating every criticism like a threat to you.

I feel the same. The new graphics look like updated "Wind Waker" stuff. Not a fan of cell shaded graphics for AAA games. Looks cheap and only acceptable for low budget indie games.

Wii sports
People love to dismiss this game but seriously it sold a ton of consoles by itself. I LOVED Uncharted 2 and played a lot of COD (never could get into Gears) but none of them appealed to non-gamers. Wii Sports on the other hand was fun for everybody.

There have been clones that have better controls like Sports Champions but there is something magical about Wii Sports. I had more fun playing it with friends than I did playing a lot of fps clones.

I thought all of these conferences were terrific. Imagine to my surprise that Nintendo's still stood out. They are light on 3rd party games, but they smartly compensated with their own strengths (and some cool collaborations). I doubt next year's E3 could be as good.

I don't play cops and robbers anymore. I don't play games aimed at 6 years old anymore.
Battlefield Hardline is cops and robbers.

You forgot games like Wii Sports, Angry Birds, and Minecraft. You're focusing too much on one market.

no, I didn't.

The other three inspired several games and made several others emulate or atleast try to emulate what made Uncharted/Call of Duty/Gears of War, Uncharted/Call of Duty/Gears of War.

The games you pointed were huge successes too, but you didn't get everyone and their mother trying to make games like them.

eh... there are countless wii sports clones on the wii and on PS360 (kinect sports, deca sports, sports champions for example). same with wii fit (EA sports active, kinect fit, U shape etc.).

defining your tastes by your age is almost an ultimate sign of immaturity. it's fine if you prefer Sony over Nintendo, no problem there, but it shouldn't be because you're 25. you're putting yourself into a strict demographic, and I feel a secure adult is one that doesn't care at all for that sort of thing, and keeps true and honest about their passions.

i'm 21 and unashamedly love Nintendo. I hardly care for Sony/Microsoft, to be completely honest. And yet, my tastes "match my age", because my age and what I'm interested in don't have to be related at all. i'm opened minded and secure enough to not be bound by presenting myself as "mature".

Am I... living in an alternate universe where shovelware knock off titles contributed to the death of the Wii? Where every popular iOS game inspires a hundred clones, very often literally using stolen source code..? Did that not happen?

With all due respect, that's an incredibly out of touch thing to say. From your perspective that might be the case, but the reality of the situation is very different. In fact, I'm kind of your polar opposite. I don't pay attention to the shooter/cinematic games, so I'm usually out to lunch on the titles they "inspire". Haha.

Watching this Smash tournament, Nintendo needs to go back to live events for E3, but not for the press, for the fans. I have never seen so many people so psyched up for gaming.

After watching Treehouse, no, they don't. The Smash tournament being live is for the fans, that's what they want and it should carry on in the future.

Wow. Dude I think you just pretty much proved his point.

Also: You do plays cops and robbers, or rather cowboys and indians, you just call it COD.

Dude, I'm a teacher, I'm around adolescents all day, believe me that two things mark you out as a child mentally: an obsession with maturity and thinking that its connected with sex and violence.

Just because the games have a fun aesthetic doesn't mean its "for kids". Splatoon looks like crazy fun, as much as any Gears or COD.

This is also the first truly next gen Zelda in 12 years. The tech is going to make it possible for lots stuff, combined with the more free-flowing gameplay structure. I don't see how Zelda is all that kiddy really, Uncharted is basically a cartoon with guns.

Just watched the event now, nintendo won E3. Zelda looked amazing and palutena in smash made my day.
.

For 17 years I've been a PlayStation guy, but I've always thought there is something charming about Nintendo and their games. Well, after this digital event and that Zelda trailer I'm convinced. My PS4 is about to get a fellow Japanese roommate.

What's funny about this post is one of the trailers they showed at the Sony conference was literally a "cops and robbers fantasy". Guess you won't be buying Battlefield: Hardline?

Your view on what's considered mature is wrong.

It's like going into a thread full of people praising Pixar movies and saying "How can you guys be so childish? You need to be more MATURE, like me. Oh by the way, anyone want to come see Transformers with me next weekend?"

You need to get over yourself. First of all that machild line is real class but if you want to talk about what games definied last gen then here I have them for you: Wii Sports, World of Warcraft and Angry Birds. You don't really sound like the mature person you think you are at all.

Best "conference" out of the three by a country mile.

I'll eat some crow regarding that. They announced a bunch of actual FIRST PARTY EXCLUSIVES instead of hamming it up with ports and remasters and "2 exclusive minutes of a bonus chore quest on our console!" type of bullshit.

Zelda looks fantastic. Splatoon genuinely looks like fun. Bayonetta 2 coming with the original game is fantastic for fans of that aesthetic shitshow (gameplay was good).

Captain Toad actually looked cool. Wooly Yoshi looked absolutely amazing, as did the new Kirby game.

Sony had two games I genuinely got excited by, Microsoft more or less had none.

I've never wanted the Wii U to succeed more than I do now because Nintendo actually seems to be getting it as far as game design goes.

I can accept that not everyone likes it but to say it's cheap and only acceptable for low budget? It's a timeless art style, which is why Wind Waker still looks good & Twilight Princess does not.

Man, I just can't believe there are still people who act as if playing Uncharted and Call of Duty is some mature experience akin to reading Dostoyevsky or something.

I played all three Uncharted games and enjoyed them a lot (except for the horrible respawning enemy arena sections). But don't kid yourself, they're basically interactive direct to DVD sequels to The Mummy, starring Nolan North as Brendan Fraser. And COD is essentially Michael Bay in video game format. These games are big, dumb, explosion fests. That's not to say they're not great games, but to sit back and pass judgement on someone who enjoys playing Mario or Donkey Kong is just weird.

People are just resentful towards Mario and Zelda and other Nintendo franchises for becoming "kiddy" but their aesthetic hasn't changed much since the NES days. You were just a kid then so you didn't care, then you got old and jaded and suddenly colorful, whimsical worlds aren't adult.

Someone said the new Zelda is targeting kids based on its art style. Who the fuck do you think OOT was targeting? How old were you when you played that game?

I'm 36 and I love colorful worlds in my games. I also love gritty world's like Fallout. I'd like to have both in my gaming collection. I want Captain Toad, Yoshi, Mario Kart, Ratchet & Clank, Sunset Overdrive, etc.

I'm old enough to stop trying to label things as for kids or adults. Let's just play games and have fun.

I would hope you'd think I wasn't including you in that. There is a rather vocal section of people who define a game's maturity by how violent or gritty it is, regardless of how inconsequential its ideas or themes are.

What I'm getting at is exactly what you said - play games and have fun. It's a game. By definition that's what you should be worried about.

I didn't assume that at all, but thanks for being concernes that I may have taken offense. :)
