Just for reference, this is what it's like working on a licensed Activision game: http://www.examiner.com/article/ex-high-moon-studios-employee-on-deadpool-troubled-development

...The fact that I JUST finished watching the original Avatar series makes this all the more crazy. O_O

Guess I'd better start catching up on Korra.

Better be Sokka DLC, or it's gonna be somebody's ass.

I'm surprised at how many people seem to think that an announcement means that devs are going to be working on it NOW, and are therefore worried about the short development period.

They've probably been working on this for months if not over a year now.

Please don't. Keep your experience in that universe pure.

You have to remember most of us who dislike Book 2 watched it as it aired, and had to stew on the mediocrity for week upon week and had that 3 week break between October and November. Although the break started right after the best episodes in the series aired. It's probably much more enjoyable to binge watch it rather than week by week. :p

I think you're overestimating the care, budget and development cycle leeway Activision gives to its licenced properties based on that article Nirolak posted. And this isn't even Spiderman, Transformers or The Walking Dead. I had to Google the property, which was apparently a cancellation risk due to low ratings.

They made MGR in like a year. It's a combination of my favorite developer, who even with 6 months or 4 months, I can't see them making a BAD combat system, and one of my favorite shows ever. I think even a mediocre platinum game will be fun to play.

And it could be much worse. We could've gotten a Wayforward game that would've been nothing but pretty sprites and shallow gameplay. I think Platinum's worst is far better than what a lot of other developers would make.

Book 1 ended on a note that made me think "I can't believe they went there on a Nickelodeon show."

Book 2 ended on a completely underwhelming fantasy cliche/trope checklist.

I have a lot of hope for Book 3 returning to the style of Book 1.

Book 2's ending made me go, "I can't believe they did that to the Avatar, and what will it mean for book 3."

It did drag in the middle, and as somebody said, it might have been the long waits between episodes (I don't think so), but I thought it ended on a high note. The final 5 or 6 episodes were great.

Book 3 is sounding fantastic, though. Going back to something more like ATLA should be awesome. The villains all look great as well. I'm hoping for some fights more like what we got in the first series. Something as good as Azula vs. Zuko, Azula vs. the Gaang. Azula and Zuko vs. Katara and Aang.

Can we get a game about Azula?

I love you, Azula.

That's because Kojipro had already spent a year before laying down most of the ground work.

KojiPro also did the story and cutscenes iirc.

And there is the design work that they did previously as well. Like everyone's beloved Mastiffs, they appeared in the very first trailer for Rising way before the Platinum came along.

PG/Saito threw all of it out aside from the "cut everything" philosophy

Well, the Mastiffs made it over.

But yeah. Throwing out the original story, creating new characters, switching engines, brand new mechanics. Doesn't sound like they had a crazy amount of groundwork to me.

They're good games. But I don't think they're 'balls-out amazing".

You may not like character action games and thats fine but that doesn't take away from the fact that Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising is top tier in their genre in terms of quality.

Anarchy Reigns is another high quality/low budget game whose biggest and really only flaw is how niche and unpopular it is for a MP focused game.

EDIT: I forgot about Vanquish, I'm a horrible person. Disregard this post entirely for forgetting that. (I haven't played W101 but thats on my todo, or madworld/infinite space).

Not that platinum arn't already irrelevant in the big picture of videogames, but is the point we look back to as the downhill slide to nonexistence? doing activision licensed work

lmao what

They're working on two other games right now, both exclusives paid for by two of the three biggest companies in gaming. Platinum is probably better off now than they've ever been.

You mean aside from the Microsoft published game coming out next year?

No Wii U version, just going to point that out here and now.
Right. The game doesn't look too interesting, but that seems a little odd indeed. Would love to know what Activision was thinking there, contracting a famous developer to develop a game for every platform except the one where 75% of their previously announced current generation output and most of their hardcore fan base is.

I'm just saying, platinum fans probably shouldn't be excited about this move

I'm sure activision is fine with passing on what little hardcore fans P has to try and hit decent numbers on the back of the TV show

Has a thread for this Legend of Korra 3DS title (by Webfoot Technologies) already been made? Or is it not significant enough to be news-worthy?

I'm also fearful of the whole Activision thing, but I'm waitin til we hear about the gameplay before getting pessimistic about it. I just know Platinum is the God of action games, and has never let me down (in fact they always destroy my high expectations).

So I'm hoping that Activision came to them with the IP because they knew Plat would do it justice, and they accepted because it made so much sense.

Probably. On the other hand, the dev has experience working on the platform, and it's downloadable so there's no inventory risk - might not be much, but I believe Activision is potentially leaving money on the table.

I liked how book 2 ended (atleast storywise and the Korra fight and final choice) and quite enjoyed it even if the book's quality was rather inconsistent and the often switching studios didn't help since the season 1 studio (Mir) did such a great job and Pierrot was disappointing at matching it, but yeah season 1 was amazing, even despite the not all that well executed teenage romance stuff, and I'm still impressed they were able to get away with that amazing final Amon scene.

Also, Korra season 1 had some of the best animation I think they've done in the franchise so far taking advantage of all of the stuff they'd learned on the first show (not that some of the best fights in ATLA don't match it ofcourse), it was consistently really pretty to look at and I thought the art and coloring style was fantastic.

Yeah, can't wait for season 3. It sounds like it's shaping up really good.
