Patch out Fire Hopping (9 votes)

Remove firehopping exploit. Makes time trial leaderboards worthless, and I've been starting to see this used online more lately

Improved Netcode (11 votes)
Netcode improvements - people getting hit but not getting slowed should be fixed]

Netcode - Extremely poor with lag, phantom collisions of items and racers, frequent communication errors and leaderboards updated after races with different positions.

Proper Options Menu (12 votes)
Add an Options Menu, and the options should consist of:
-Control layout customization
-Sound effect and music volume adjust
-Surround Sound/Stereo option
-Brightness Level Adjust
-While in Pause Menu add option for small mini map for lower corner of screen

Highlight Reel/Next Race position swap (12 votes)
Change "View Highlight Reel" to second choice and move "Next Race" to first choice that is automatically highlighted after each race, so next race can be selected more quickly and would be the preferred choice.

Switch View Highlight and Next Race

On TV-screen Minimap (14 votes)
add a minimap showing the racer's locations and/or lap times for the race thus far.

The lack of map on screen is also a major flaw.

Full Gamepad View for user. (15 votes)
In local multiplayer I want the gamepad only show the player who is using gamepad fullscreen. I don't want to see 4 player splitscreen on gamepad as it is really annoying to use a quarter of the screen to play.

In two player local co-op, have the player using the gamepad have fullscreen on the game pad, and the second player have full screen on the TV. This seems like such a huge oversight, I'm not sure why this wasn't a priority from day one.

Better Item Distribution/Balance (18 votes)
Tweak item balance; e.g. 2nd place should not be able to get crazy 8 and triple reds; 8th place should not be able to get coins.

Item selection/balance - there is none. The racer in 2nd can get a Crazy 8 while the guy in last gets a coin. The 7th and 8th racers will both get Bullet Bills and the same time. Racers 4-8 will get triple red shells from the same set of boxes at the end of the race. Lightning twice in the same lap. The game just doesn't care. Either the programmer responsible for this part of the game was drunk the entire time or Ono was subcontracted from Capcom to troll us.

Player Stats (18 votes)
Stats menu option similar to MKWii is needed to show things like how many coins you have collected, your most picked character/courses, how many hits you've made, etc."

A stats screen showing coins gained, most selected character, bike, kart etc.

Battle Arenas (28 votes)

BATTLE MODE ARENAS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!
Would be nice to get Battle Arenas as free DLC, as they should have been in there from the start.
Just the Battle Mode with proper battle mode maps.

I can never find people on the current ones.

Add battle mode tracks.

real battle courses (classic ones too)

I was so close to buying this but no battle mode is no buy for me. Man, I just want to relive those old battle mode moments again. Hopefully they add in online matchmaking for it too.

I just got MK8 yesterday and I was shocked to see how gimped "battle" mode is. That's not battle mode. That's pure laziness, Nintendo. I mean, we though that MK64's battle mode was lazy, but this is just sad.

Love the game, but battle mode is a huge disappointment.

Other Notable suggestions:

Rainbow Road 64 more than 1 lap (optional lap setting stage-wide)
More varied glider and vehicle parts stats
Option to Change character/vehicle between races
In-Game Voice Chat (even if just friends only)
Larger character roster
Weight Class/Character and slipstream balancing
FIX - dupe frames glitch
Option to Choose Tilt/Traditional controls outside of races.

"Friend invite lobbies" was the first one I expected, leaving disappointed. Maybe I haven't looked enough to find it in the game?

*Reads the list*
Okay, it's a pretty good list.

Yeah, I think 2 laps for rainbow road 64 would be great.

Surely the annoying thing where you shoot someone and they don't slow down is impossible to fix as its latency issue and it's a high speed game? It would be like having perfectly lag free multiplayer backstabs in dark souls...

Battle mode doesn't trouble me at all...Is it a lot of people care about it or a small amount of people care about it a lot, I wonder? EDIT: What am I saying, the voting proves a lot of people care...

It surprises me that in game voice chat and an online invite system didn't make it into the top 10.

For me those are the top 2.
I'd be nice to play this online without having to use Whatsapp on my phone and Teamspeak on my PC to get the sort of online experience you can get in basically every other good online released during the last decade

Fire hopping is much more interesting than snaking, it can't be used in all situations and it takes skill to do. Unlike snaking it is not something you are constantly doing, but looking for opportunities to fire hop is rewarding. I enjoy it when people find advanced techniques in Mario Kart, people complain about items randomising the game too much then go on to say that techniques that make it skill based should be removed...

I still can't believe we need to worry about any of this, but holy shit. I love this game, but was it Quality Tested?!

I'd also move the Highlight Reel/Next Race to 2 and Mini Map to 3, personally. Hopefully this happens, and we get more than just Mercedes DLC. Preferably alongside good DLC, too, although I still can't help but feel some mainstays like Birdo, Jr., Dry Bones, & Diddy and newcomers like Nabbit were withheld to be DLC down the line...

Battle Mode
-Option to turn off time limit in Battle Mode
-Option to set speed to 150CC in Battle Mode (currently 50CC)
-DLC for classic Battle Mode maps

Well yes a great great list indeed. So how can we make Nin notice this? How can we ALL make sure they get the message? Does anybody have an idea of a way that has worked before and we could use again?

What is Fire Hopping ?

I was just wondering the same and came across this

Amazing list.
+1 for 3 actual laps N64 Rainbow Road (that'll make it a ~5min track on 150cc)

I'm against all exploits. Fix them all.

Also, I wasn't going crazy when I was hitting people online and they weren't slowed down. That's an actual netcode bug!

Oh and, for number 5, if it happens (I'll be very happy tbh) I want an arrow and dots for "locators" and not heads. Heads are stupid and less precise.

Number 4 pisses me off so much. Nintendo, you make your console $50-$100 more expensive by including the Gamepad, sell me a line about how it opens up amazing new gameplay experiences, and then you can't even be arsed to use it in the most obvious and practical way imaginable.

We should also add:

"Permanently ban online players who do not choose Mount Wario when given the choice of tracks"

All kidding aside, this is a great list. Thanks for putting it together. I'd still love to see my suggestion of giving you the option to permanently enable rear view mirror on the GamePad so you can glance down at what's behind you instead of needing a button prompt. No one seemed to agree, though :-(

Also....*checks spreadsheet* umm, gamepad as rear view mirror.. 1 vote :(
sorry, and yeah, it's a very cool idea, this seems to be a requested feature in many racing games where a second screen can be used.

Couldn't you use your PSP as one in one of the Gran Turismo games or am I imagining that?

Huh. I didn't vote, but I'm surprised character balance didn't make the top 10.

What is Fire Hopping ?

Hopping back and forth after you get any sort of boost. Due to a bug, doing this makes you go faster.

Watch a world-record ghost in Time Trials to see exactly what it is.

Yeah, I just noticed it myself. As it stands, there's no real reason to play one of the lighter classes, so that's far from ideal. I would trade 04 or 05 for more balanced weight classes without hesitation.

Slots to save and quickly choose vehicle setups (8 Votes) - agreed

Patch out Fire Hopping (9 votes) - didn't even know this was a thing

Improved Netcode (11 votes) - Haven't had these issues aside from the drops but always a good idea

Proper Options Menu (12 votes) - agreed

Highlight Reel/Next Race position swap (12 votes) - meh, doesn't really bother me

On TV-screen Minimap (14 votes) - I prefer less clutter and it isn't like the tracks are all that hard to memorize

Full Gamepad View for user. (15 votes) - agreed

Better Item Distribution/Balance (18 votes) - agreed

Player Stats (18 votes) - indifferent

Battle Arenas (28 votes) - Easily the biggest thing I want patched in

Not sure if it's mentioned but being able to see everyone's items on the game pad screen during off screen play so I know when to use my star.

I totally support every one of those requests, even though I'm not sure if getting #4 done is possible anymore, at least not that easily

It's really unfortunate if thats the case.
I tried just looking at the gamepad when playing local multiplayer and started tapping the screen, I was really shocked I was forced to watch the 4-way split on there...it's like local multiplayer for ants.

Character weight balance not in the top 10? Heavies have nearly all the benefits compared to the lighter classes. That's not including the crazy weight stat bumping either.

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Hypothetically if f Nintendo incorporated these changes + a healthy amount of new characters/courses, and released it as a whole new game similar to a Fighting Game upgrade/Pokemon 3rd Version, would you buy it?

I honestly probably would to be honest.

where the fuck is funky kong

I'm starting to wonder if there's some sort of "bat embargo" situation going on. Like you know when Nolan was doing Batman, the various DC ensemble series stopped including Batman characters for quite awhile.

Maybe since Donkey Kong's actually getting his own main games again, Nintendo wants to phase him out a bit from the Mario Universe and make him distinct. Might explain why there's no new Donkey Kong level, and no Donkey Kong characters besides the man himself.

I disagree that item balance needs to be messed with. I LIKE that the rubber banding effects aren't as prominent

I'm really curious why people are so against fire hopping, could you explain why you think it should be removed?

Because most see it as an unfair exploit that should be removed at all costs. I personally think it actually adds an element of skill beyond "drift at this turn, drift at that turn", so I welcome it with open arms. Hell, I think it should be patched in for indrift bikes. Might as well complain about excessive wheelie-ing in MKW, imo.

Because I see it as something of an exploit. You can artificially make your slideboost last longer if you avoid touching the ground. So you keep hopping and you go faster for longer. And not just a little bit longer, quite a bit longer.

That and it's only for karts, doesn't apply to inside-drifting cycles. So anyone who chooses one of those is automatically at a loss compared to someone in a kart who knows how to firehop.

It's a mechanic that I don't feel belongs in the game.

This is how I feel too. I think it should be embraced rather than patched out.

I find a lot of accidental mechanics/exploits/bugs in games can lead to making the games more interesting and fun. Combos in Street Fighter II, strafe jumping in Quake, wave dashing in Tekken/Capcom Vs/Smash Bros were accidental techniques that added depth to their games. Sometimes unintentional parts of games can be a good thing.

Mario Kart games have never had particularly great balance, so it's not surprising that specific play styles are better than others. In my opinion the better choice, as mention above, would be to let inside drifting bikes fire hop, or to buff them in a way to make their play style more rewarding. I think fire hopping is a good middle ground between standard racing and the craziness of snaking. It rewards skilful play without disrupting how the game plays as much as snaking did.
