Yeah although I'm sure this event was a massive financial success for Valve I have to imagine they look at is and are disappointed in a few other ways.

IceFrog might want to take a look at death ball strats (maybe tower armor needs to be buffed early and slowly degrade over time?) but the only thing Valve really needs to do is figure out a better tournament format. I think knowing 2 of the top 3 teams after a single day of the main event did the entire event a huge disservice.

Disappointment in the grand final aside, you can't really argue that overall this tournament was all bad tho. It was definitely a tournament of underdogs. There were a lot of good runs from teams that nobody gave a chance to, and that's a good thing. I think all that excitement just peaked early.

For everybody that is all like "people say they don't want traditional, long-ass, Chinese Dota games now they say they don't want fast games" the difference is, most of those long-ass Chinese Dota games feature one team getting a nearly insurmountable early lead and then not pressing their advantage and just ending it when they can, instead backing off to farm and six slot their cores before finally pushing into the base because it's "safe."

There's a huge difference between traditional, drawn out, Chinese Dota Vs. a rat game, where a rat game is unsure until the very end. Rat Dota games more often than not end with the team that does NOT have a clear advantage early/mid game coming out on top. Traditional, long-ass Chinese Dota is one team dominating kills and economy for 60+ minutes and then deciding it's time to finally win. Not saying traditional, long-ass, Chinese Dota games would have been more exciting than what we got, but rat Dota definitely would have been.
True.

I guess the solution is: if Western teams don't like it, they need to step up to the fucking plate again and make sure a Western team is in the Grand Finals next year. We got amazing Doto up until today. Then we got a pile of shit dropped into our hands.

LoL addressed some of the strength of early tower pushes by increasing the armor on towers for the first 8 minutes (iirc) of the game.

HOWEVER. LoL doesn't have heroes like NP, Enchantress or Chen who depend on their early-game impact (the later 2 in particular) and ability to push towers to be relevant. Add armor to towers and you effectively destroy Chen and Enchant. They'd never be picked again.

Back to this thread to wallow in disappointment. So I guess the finals make up for the absolute shit storm which was the rest of the event. Oh well swings and roundabouts.

You sommbitches are going to have to explain to my why you didn't just exchange phone numbers like civilized people. Forums shouldn't be your text messaging system.

Why do people think the ti finals should always be close and dramatic? That's not how it is in any other sport. Hell sometimes you wait 4 years for a world cup and end up with a penalty shoot out in the final.

I get that people are disappointed but I don't see why it being a blow-out is some kind of problem for the "meta" or a crisis for the game in general.

So now that it's over, let's look at how our fave teams did and what you think about them going forward.

For me, I'm pretty proud (as much as a guy can be proud of a group he arbitrarily chose to cheer for) of C9 getting as far as they did, but a little disappointed as well. I didn't really believe Envy when he said that they had a realistic shot at taking it, but watching how they played, I now see he may have been right. An outside shot certainly, but when they played at their best they were winning games against IG, VG etc off of their own play, not throws by the opposition. If they work on their play on certain heroes, stick together and focus on improving their early game (I'd like to see Pie and Aui act as a duo more), then I have high hopes for TI5, and any big tourneys in between now and then.

Oh, and I think with 3 euro players they count as euro, so they are the best euro team this year.

I think if teams start defending as actively and aggressively (and coordinating as precisely) as Newbee did against Vici, the "deathball" meta can be solved. I think Razor might be the only hero that needs a nerf, but most teams played him really badly so maybe not. Win Lane > Buy Mek > Kill Heroes > Buy Aghs > Kill Base looked really strong when Vici managed to draft him.

I'm curious to see what "prep time" EG will do against these push lineups. They looked really unprepared.

its just incredibly disappointing when every single other grand finale had highlights to offer while this one didn't have any

So glad TI is finally over. If Bulldog/Sheever/Xyclopz/Bububu don't start streaming again within a week or two you guys are going to have to put me on suicide watch.

Saw Rotk and other VG riding sad taxi away after and waved. I'm sure they will be fine. Now I feel bad I didn't talk more with them at Summit.

We did?

Some didn't share or some lurk or bring others.

James says he wont host another TI

Now that the finals are done, lets talk Hero model updates and shit

I dont know how theyre going to change Void. His model is already so nice plus he has so many sets that would have to be changed

PA Arcana better have a fucking amazing crit animation. Like if you get a critcial hit kill the enemy hero/creep is cut in half and the top half slides to the floor while the bottom half falls over

That is exactly what I was thinking. I would not be surprised to see the damage type of Serpent Wards changed so they aren't guaranteed to take 50-100% of a Tier 1 at level 6 as well. Upping the armor on towers might do a bit to give people time to react to deathballs.

He can be kept the same, but more fleshed out, more details and stuff. The model is a bit too plain

All this hype with The International is starting to get to me. I think I may actually try to jump in and play DOTA 2.

I installed it over the weekend and played the first three tutorial missions, and watched a few videos about the basic concepts online.

Any recommended 'study material' that I can watch outside of the game?

I would recommend Purge's written guide, but it's so old now that the game has moved on a bit. However, if you look for his youtube channel and watch his intro videos that explain basic concepts, then watch some of his game commentaries that are more recent, that's a good start. This thread is always willing to answer questions, and I believe we now have a bunch of newbie gaffers who party up a lot, so you can learn by playing together.

Does anyone know when compendium point earning stops? I want to complete my player card collection but I still need like 5 cards and for some reason they're all like $0.20 on the market right now. How much time do I have to wait and see if they go back down to $0.03?

They probably won't, because everyone is trying to fill their compendiums at the last minute... like you.

Don't make me depressed about Alliance again :(

Anyone else more hyped about balance changes than the new heroes? Not that I dislike the current meta or any of the popular heroes but it's just the most exciting part for me, listening to several analyses, theorycrafting my ass off, etc. Maybe I'm weird.

Man. I really didn't care who won between those two teams, but the games were just bad. Only Game 2 was semi good.

Also are they gonna remove the Champion's Chest anytime soon?

I need my Bulldog, SingSing, Icex3(does he even stream anymore?), N0tail, H4nni streams.

Tinker removed from game

Ice said he will stream probably when he goes back to Singapore initially. He will head to China after that, at which point who knows, depends on what team he ends on probably.

And goddamn I cannot wait for Sing to start streaming regularly again. I feel like part of me has been missing.

I'm just really sad DK lost so badly.

For the record, I don't believe TI4 was rigged though it may sound like I do in the TI thread. Haha.

As fun as these ultra aggressive games are to watch, they snowball incredibly fast. When teams play this good and manage to exploit every little advantage, it becomes one-sided really fast after one team makes a mistake. There's wasn't really a lot of back and forth either, because if you lose one or two fights you are already on a disadvantage and if you then try to force something to happen it's a recipe for disaster.
Really its just this. I don't mind the speed, I don't mind the heroes or anything, it just feels like the games we watched were consistently one sided escalation. There was a relative lack of back and forth development

Because they didn't pick enough stall or counter push or pickoff imo
