Destiny: Only one area per planet

Well I played a hunter and titan, leveled them both to 8, did multiple strike runs to gear them up, played PvP, played missions multiple times with different friend groups.

Probably boils down to a matter of gaming habit. I'm the guy who lost months of his life to WoW, creating new characters, leveling and running the same missions over and over for the fun of getting new gear and experiencing things with friends.

Not everybody has fun replaying content I guess. For me, though, this game is going to be a huge time sink. I'm hooked.

Only complaint was the mission structures were redundant. But I'm excited to see where Bungie takes this trilogy. This is just the first glimpse at where Bungie is taking us.

That's fair - and if that's the case I know a lot of people who will love this game. Maybe it just isn't up my alley then, I'm primarily a single-player guy and I was hoping for a really lengthy and meaty campaign. As such I found the narrative a bit disappointing and the story structure felt very odd. Like, I didn't even see a single NPC to talk to throughout the entire game.

But the gunplay is very fun and the items are cool, I'm not one to grind but I can see the incentive there for people that do.

That is what Destiny really is, Explore the frontier, absorb the environment your in and be a Legenadry badass while doing it

But that's just the thing...if there's not much to explore and absorb, then what's the point? Not sure how I'm gonna feel like a Legendary badass. Especially if you're not doing it solo.

I dunno but I'm glad this thread was made. I didn't want to hang around the beta thread expressing my concerns and being called a concern troll. Not my fault there are a lot of people in there using the usual "This game guys...THIS GAME" like they're about to explode with excitement and stuff. Like it's an amazing experience.

Don't really care what percentage of the game this is. It's demonstrated very little to show where the fun is. All the missions were lame. And seeing the enemies just having color palette swaps on the moon was lame. Even in the trailers you don't see many types.

I normally don't like PvP, so that's not gonna be a selling point. I don't like the PvP on this either. Haven't really fallen for a competitive MP game since Lost Planet.

And grinding for better gear seems pointless if the game isn't that long.

Just gonna take the safe route and rent it.

In the grand scheme of things, this one stupid thread on a message board isn't going to determine if Destiny is a success or not.

At all.

Like not even close. GAF probably makes up less than one percent of all sales on games.

I think you understimate the power of internet, forums and social media these days.

Not just GAF, but every message board from Gamefraqs, IGN Forum, Reddit....

Don't underestimate social media, it can hype a game to sales higher than it would and it can go the other way.

I think one of the things that bothers me about this is that they chose Old Russia for Earth. Yeah, a old boneyard is nice and all, but I'd much rather explore a dilapidated city like Old Chicago. Maybe we've had too many post-apocalyptic settings in video games, but Old Russia is pretty much just a field with old wrecks and a few falling-down buildings. At least with Chicago you get to explore. Then again seeing how limited the exploration is in Old Russia, it'd probably be just a few small areas linked together by the subway system.

’But it needs as much content as [ insert MMO here ]!’
No it doesn’t. This isn’t an MMO. This is a FPSRPG with some MO ( notice the missing M? ) elements and should be treated as such. Expect Borderlands-level amounts of content for the initial release ( which they seem to already be passing ), not MMO-levels.

Sorry to ignore your overall point but I don't see them passing Borderlands in terms of content. Borderlands first areas seem to have more content than Destiny's first. This is especially true if there are only 22 story missions of the length we've seen on the moon and earth, not to mention the sidequests are a joke. Have you actually played a borderlands game to completion with the sidequests?

Don't get me wrong, I have a preorder and will be keeping it, mostly because there's not much coming with this kind of multiplayer in the near future, but yeah, not seeing this point of it having more content than borderlands.

No I really don't.

Majority of GAF: "Kinect will be an absolute failure, no one will buy that shit".

Kinect goes on to sell 29 million units. GAF's opinion is close to meaningless in terms of sales outlook. Mainstream gamers determine if games are successes or not, the same ones who aren't refreshing GAF, Gamefaqs and IGN everyday.

I've been reading through that redtit topic and it seems like they told lies about how big the planets and levels are?

I enjoyed the beta but I think I'll wait for more info before getting this game.

Came into this thread expecting to see GAF defending Destiny with all their might. Was pleasantly surprised to see most posts are sensibly calling this disappointing.

I'd be less disappointed by this if I didn't fear that much of the content will be more "protect Peter Dinklage while he hacks a computer" copy paste missions. I'm also of the mind that the invisible kill walls totally ruin any sense of adventure and exploration in the outdoor levels. I hope they dial those down in the final version. It should at least be readily apparent where you can't go-- if it boils down to a 50/50 chance you will die if you jump into/onto X then they're doing it wrong. That's some Bionic Commando reboot level shit.

I still plan on buying the game (mainly because I want to play my friends) but I'm definitely a bit let down by all of this.

Agreed, Borderlands had a lot of content, they way this is going I'm not seeing Destiny having more without resorting to DLC.

GAF is not a hivemind, people have different opinions, and since GAF has a lot of people, you know how it goes.

I think I fear most for the story. What you got from the story was incredibly uninteresting in the beta. Halo has a pretty solid story from what I've played (never played 3) so Destiny has no excuse.

It's Sunday, believe it or not the world doesn't revolve around NeoGAF.

They're a little over a month before release. They're probably in the "All hands on deck" mode.

If anything, they're figuring out how to properly speak to this whole thing while minimizing who's going to be angry.

Ofcourse GAF doesn't determine the success of a game (the hyperbole pre-Watch Dogs launch proved just that). With that said, the amount of content, if true, is disappointing for people who are considering picking this up. 22 missions isn't very long given the length of the beta missions.

ElTorro

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Why do people say that the game is being ripped apart on GAF when half of the posts in this thread are defending it, and the second OT for the Beta is already past 18k posts?

Even if the scale of the areas is somewhat disappointing, it's apparently a good game.

My main concern isn't just that it sounds limited or has little to do, my issue is that the beta had a few missions that were all incredibly similar, which made it feel like there was less to do. I hope that changes in the final launch

Sshhh, no facts. Only arbitrary expectations.

I've said IP, not game. Destiny IP has 500M$ invested, or it will be.

Responding to a question from a fan, Bungie’s Eric Osborne repeated the developer’s Chief Operating Officer Pete Parsons’ explanation: “For marketing you'd have to ask Activision people, but for development costs, not anything close to $500 million,” Parsons told GameIndustry International in an interview. “I think that speaks a lot more to the long-term investment that we're making in the future of the product.”

Oh, I thought there were five planets.

I thought there were going to be more than five alien star systems, each with several planets open for exploration. That, combined with an epic story that took full advantage of all that content. Long story short, I expected Destiny to be "Mass Effect meets Halo" in a massive scale. No pun intended. RPG elements and inherent differences aside, of course. I expected to be seriously impressed.

In any case, my unmeasured expectations might have had something to do with the "Explore the Universe" line I thought I kept reading/hearing in past game shows, interviews, previews, etc. Can't deny it's totally my fault for allowing my imagination to run wild with this one. My bad.

I don't think it is unreasonable to expect some people at Bungie are working on the last day of public beta.

Yes, because Joe the data analyst, Jane the programmer and Bill the IT admin are so excited to comment publicly on rumors on a weekend without management approval.

That doesn't mean anything. The amount a company plans to invest on a game has absolutely no bearing on if PR should work on weekends. It's an entirely arbitrary expectation.

hmmm I was thinking that we would only have the Earth, Venus, Mars, Mercury and the Moon in the campaign and this confirms my suspicions..

Anyway, after the multiplayer, I am back on the fence with this game...

in one you go to an objective and hold the scan button

in another you go to multiple objectives and hold the scan button, but with more people!

LOL! I still think Raids will be challenging. And I think you need to play all Strikes before you say it's all holding the scan button. You're bullshitting as far as you're going.

I've Platinumed Borderlands 1 and 2, even have all the DLC's the game offered
You can't match Destiny Beta with a full retail game
Most of BL side-quests were the same ol' shit in different zones with you going out of your way to collect something, shoot something, open something or a combination of both
Destiny does the same thing

I don't know why people keep putting Borderlands on some goddamn pedestal, like it's the be all game Destiny is fight against

Borderlands 1 & 2 were fun games, the main story made no fucking sense at all, the side quest were the same shit you have experienced before in countless rpgs, now you can do them with literally RPG's by blowing the objective sky high
The saving grace of BL was it's meme ready content for the masses to latch onto and trying to throw humor into the mix which paid off for them

I'll wait till Destiny's release before I make these ridiculous/absurd judgements just basing it off a BETA and data-mined info until then, the game has been fun for me
Destiny doesn't feel like BL at all too me, and i've put in ungodly hours into BL, to get both Platinums, you have too (that's with the DLC's include and the game breaking shit that came along that a lot of players fucking forget about)
BL matach-making was broken as fuck for the first month+ cause of shitty gamespy servers
Destiny alone shows to me that if I want to join someone or they want to join me, it's always a smooth experience, not some shit-astic error upon error

Yeah, the mission design we've seen leaves a LOT to be desired. I am more forgiving based on how much we have, but if there really is one area per planet then I'm going to be much more critical of it when the full game comes out if that stuff isn't improved.

Cancelled my pre-order. I'll wait and see what the reviews say so I can make an educated purchasing decision on this game. If this game does honestly have more varied and exciting missions with many more areas to explore then that should come across in the reviews and I will order the game again.

Also does anger me a little that when you look back at what Bungie advertised the game as. For example the claim they made during their E3 demo that "This is all real. This is not a skybox. This is all actual geometry: I can actually go and take a stroll down that road... I won't now, in the interests of time." So either they were lying to our faces and falsely advertising their product or areas were cut from the game. If we make the assumption that Bungie wouldn't knowingly lie to us and instead consider the implications of the latter, I think one needs to really ask the question of whether these areas were cut on Activision's orders for DLC. Recall if you will the leaked contract deal between Bungie and Activision and these two bullet points about DLC and sequels. That could be an explanation for where the promised content vanished to.

Eh, I'm not in I guess. I've been on the fence this whole time anyhow, Less area to explore takes away a lot of my interest too. Sigh...
