So beautiful. I don't understand though. I'm cramming money against my screen and nothing is happening.

I really like how Capcom is re-doing the items in the backgrounds too and adding a new ones also... makes me really excited to explore the mansion and discover what else they added and re-done.

I also love how the new lighting reflection on the characters blend then even more what the background instead of being noticed that they were standing out of them.

The Mansion is my all time favorite setting... it's just a perfect setting a game could dream of.

It's a cobbled project that's picking stuff from Darkside Chronicles and tries to make it play like an original RE game.

I'm sure the dude is passionate but it takes more than that. You need to start from scratch and create new content, not use past games' data as a crutch. Feels cheap.

Yeah, some scenes might be recreated using ripped assets but it's just a fantasy really.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
It can't because the animations are tied to framerate. The game runs too fast if you play it at 60fps. The only things in the game that run at 60 are the door animations I believe.
I honestly believe some people can't tell stuff are moving abnormally fast when setting some games to 60fps, they just think it looks great which is true from a IQ point of view but it also looks wrong and stupid sometimes.

the gamecube version can be run on 60 FPS on emulator

No it cannot.

Running it at 60fps runs it at 2x speed. Only the door opening animations are 60fps.

This of course doesn't mean that the animations are inherently only possible to be rendered at 30fps. It just means that the framerate isn't unlocked.

For example, Kingdom Hearts II runs at 30fps, and if you render at 60fps in an emulator it plays double speed.

However you can also use an AR code in the emulator which allows you to render the game out at 60fps, or 120fps, or any arbitrary framerate and be completely smooth.

I think REmake is the exact same. I would be that if someone had the knowledge on how to do it, they could set remake to render it at 1/2 speed, then emulate it at 2x speed to allow for 60fps gameplay, and 120fps door opening animations, similar to how you can do such a thing in Super Smash Bros Brawl for 120fps gameplay.

Now that I can see these on pc, I hope that those crushed blacks are just poor settings from captures on their overly bright tv's, they lose at least half the detail in each scene at first glance on them.

Some angles are going to look really tight and annoying with 4:3 widescreen cropping, I do suggest on a first play that you use 4:3, this game was made around it after all, the game shows you all you need to see.

Still sort of hyped but eh, wait and see on this one.

REmake is pretty much up the with the all time greats of survival horror.....an RE2 remake would be the greatest survival horror game of all time if done correctly. Would be sitting there alongside Silent Hill 2.

This has to be a success for it to happen.

If they lost the CG backgrounds how did they do Resident Evil UC? Don't tell me they did the house and zero chapter all over again.

Probably gonna buy a Japanese PS3 copy just so I can have a physical version. Probably will have english voice overs too. But will get PS4 digital also. lol

I´ll stick to my launch GCN copy, but this is pretty great news for all those that are yet to experience this masterpiece. Fantastic game.

I'm hoping Capcom does like they did with Ducktales Remastered where they released it digitally at first, then not too long after that they released a physical retail copy.

I'm thinking about just going ahead and pre-ordering the PS3 Japanese version.

But you aren't fighting the controls, you're fighting your willingness to try things that are unique.

I simply cannot ever stress this enough. The controls of classic RE are not difficult or cumbersome, unless you're unable to reverse left from right depending on your perspective, which I'm sure you can if you try.

Good job, I'm surprised by how similar it looks.

For what it's worth, I think this is going to be an excellent port.

I can't seem to upscale it to 1080p and make it look ok though. The higher resolution the more "artificial" it looks if you try to de-blur the image.

Let's see how Capcom will handle it.

FYI the capcom-e edition is now sold out at play-asia. but the collectors edition is still available

I'm probably just getting standard edition. I don't see the 48 page artbook being worth the extra money. It'll probably consist of pictures you can already find online.

A while ago I was doing this my own as a "HD" upgrade and I think the end process looks okay.

Normal rendering at 1080p vs 1080p rendering with SweetFx + custom scaled pre-rendered background.

To best view it, open the images in separate tabs then tab back and forth between them.

The SweetFx has moving film grain added as well as bloom.

Here's how it looks rendered without the SweetFx.

Here is just a comparison of the raw pre-rendered background, scaled bilinearly (as Dolphin and TV's would) compared to my scaling.

A bit off topic but in light of this announcement I would like to play RE5 again and RE6. Where is the cheapest place to get both? I would get the gold edition of RE5 if it's much better than the original version.

But does anyone know if a collection of the RE games is coming out? I'd wait for that if possible.

To my awareness, XBLA is having a Capcom sale right now and you can pick up a digital copy of Resident Evil 5 along w its DLC for a total of $11. As for RE 6, you can likely find a cheap, used copy on Amazon.

No one knows that the animations are locked to that framerate, and I severely doubt that they actually are.

The only thing that would be locked to that framerate would be animated backgrounds, which make up a pretty tiny portion of the games environment. Even so, your character moving at 60fps across a 30fps background isn't even that weird.

In RE4PC the 30fps reload animation stood out because it 30fps animated character, who is usually 60fps in a 60fps world.

In REmake it would be a 60fps animated character, moving across a 30fps animated section, who us isually a 60fps animated character moving across a completely static section.

I'll differ to you on this as you are an expert in this area, I haven't even played the original Resident Evil.

When do you think we'll have the first gameplay trailer?

Next week at Gamescom or next month at TGS?

I would assume farily soon as the Japanese release is in November.

This is the original 512x448 image from the original GC game (saved in jpg):

This is the upscaling/filtering/postprocessing Capcom did:

announcementscreen001-1407232565.jpg

This is a quick and dirty but also somewhat sophisticated, upscale I did:

newnewhlfpy.png

They look similar but Capcom seems to have additionally processed the upscaled images to remove compression artifacts. Take a look at the windows for example.
So the 1st is direct from the GC ver, the 2nd is the new Remaster and the 3rd is your personal attempt at the 1st?

I think the bloom factor's a little too strong in the 2nd one and the tone is a bit warmer with the lighting; it's a great shot in itself but some of the creep factor is sucked out by the warmth and bloom. Maybe there's a way they can rid of compression artifacts and strike something more like the 3rd image and scale back on the sepia tint just a teeny bit.

That's nice. Something about the blood splatter in the 2nd looks a bit fake tho. It's too evenly lighted and too warm in color.

Holy shit that's a nice find !
Forest (that's his name?) has been moved to the right.
The plants' have been replaced (the one on the right was aliasing even in the original version).

I can't tell if this has been done using image editing or if the actual pot and herbs have been altered in the original 3D scene file.

I would go with the former.
I did some quick digging in the orginal GC files and the other find was this:

The mansion was textured with close-ups in mind, they used very high-res textures for the time. It's basically a CG movie of the 2000-era.
I thought that maybe they tried and there were too many artifacts because the source material wasn't of enough quality, but no.

What this means is, rerendering wouldn't bring about too many artifacts of whatever kind(even if it did they could just upscale the source textures instead ... but I guess that's too much work). The source material is high-res itself. Just look at the material applied on the "S" shapes in the garden and the level of detail even when the viewpoint is really close to the chair.

This is really maddening because we get upscaled images that are retouched by hand instead. Well I guess we should be happy it's getting ported.
Background-wise, this is nothing more than a quick job (for now ?).

Do you have link to the tools used for extracting backgrounds? I wouldn't mind taking a look at this too.

When playing through Dolphin you can dump textures as they appear in game. All the backgrounds are just textures, so every time you enter a room or camera change it can dump the background.

I'm actually dumping a bunch right now because I'm trying my own scaling on them to see if I can get something that looks a bit better than what Capcom has put out so far, and much better than what REmake looks like typically scaled up.

I'm uploading a fat group of the backgrounds to my Sta.sh now (it should be about 217 of them).

You can check that folder out and it should be updating as the rest upload.

REmake was a marvel.

It definitely is. I made these as well from some specific backgrounds.

I originally tried to make the strikes longer and more realistic, but I wanted to keep them under 1Mb and the better looking realistic ones were about 1.5Mb

If anyone has a specific background from semi-early in the game (I'm currently playing through my first time!) that they'd want a lightning GIF for I can see if I could get that.

I must've played REmake a zillion times on my game starved (but still wonderful) GameCube. I'm gonna buy the shit out of this. Probably on PC. It will be a joy.
