For a series that sale at least a million in its home market. I doubt 100k+ would be something Capcom happy with. This REmake use as much money as producing full new game. It was only Shinji ambition to put this game exclusively on GC.
REmake (came out in March/April 2002) was expected (by Capcom) to sell...
Japan - unknown
America - 250,000
Europe - 180,000
It sold...
Japan - 400,000
America - 490,000 (1.96 times their expected sales)
Europe - 360,000 (2 times their expected sales)
For a total of 1,250,000 in it's first year (1,350,000 lifetime).
As a result, they increased their expectations for RE Zero, which came out in November 2002.
Expected - 1,420,000
First year - 1,120,000 (21% below expectations)
Lifetime - 1,250,000
REmake was technically not a bomba, while RE Zero was. Even if Mikami says that REmake "didn't sell very well", or that RE4 would have stayed closer to RE1 if it had.
Even RE4 didnt sell that much more. Hence the end of exclusive. Capcom put 2 of the best RE on that console and sell like shit.
Capcom pulled the plug on RE's exclusivity well before RE4 sold even one copy on GameCube.
