Pokken Tournament co-developed with Harada and Namco Bandai Announced for arcades

Honestly I hope that they don't dumb down the game too much.

I really don't want Pokken to be another dissatisfying Jojos All Star Battle situation.

Please keep the main game technical and competitive. To lower the entry barrier, they could add a simplified control scheme for newcomers akin to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom's Wii Remote Controls.

While providing a simplified control scheme, they could focus more on the game mechanics and add in certain things like crashing, bounds, etc. Just some way to extend your combos at the cost of your red life and create a fast paced, competitive fighting game.

Obviously this wouldn't be the case with an arcade first release, but an alternative, simplified control scheme does alleviate some issues with the game being"too hard" while maintaining needed mechanics and skills.

Plus since the official Pokemon Metagame is Doubles, why not add tag battles. Mind as well. If not, who cares Pokken is happening and I hope it becomes very technical. Not TTT2 level, but at least one that makes the game satisfying.

Q: Congrats on making Pokken a reality! And thank you for that! Rather than tweet you a request, today I've got a bit of a query: in Pokken Tournament it seems like Pokemon trainers do not exist? It's not that I'm requesting for them to make an appearance, but rather I'd just like to find out if that's the case.

Harada: Worry not.
Going to make a not so great leap and predict customizable trainers as avatars.

And, if they like money, they'd ride the DLC clothing and accessories train straight to the bank.

Not to rain on anyones parade here but is there a reason why we dont get a normal Pokemon RPG on consoles?

I think i've been waiting for that for over a decade now, and all i got was Pokemon Snap, Stadium, something else and now this?

I haven't seen this posted before.

director of this game (Harada) responding to Twitter questions

Q: Is it true that Tekken characters [will] be making guest appearances in Pokemon/Pokken Tournament?

Harada: Ha, ha, ha. Nope, Tekken characters will not be making an appearance.

Harada: As we're making a Pokemon fighting action battle game, I've already touched on this while on the livestream, but in this game there will not be a high/mid/low guard system mechanic. Instead, we're planning to include a new type of [mechanic]

Q: -As it's a fighting game, I'm a little worried that the roster will be full of humanoid-looking Pokemon.. I'd rather be surprised with unexpected picks instead.

Harada: That's not a problem at all. Technologically-speaking, we shouldn't face any problems in implementing whatever Pokemon we want. In terms of the system mechanics, we'll be looking at what fans would want, so please rest assured.

It just occurred to me that Lucario, the pokemon shown in prettymuch every shot of this game so far, takes double damage from fighting moves :3

The creators want mainline entries on portable.

I don't know why people have this idea that somehow releasing a game on arcades first automatically makes it more balanced or free from other problems.
It's a different strategy, to appeal to a different audience, gain an additional revenue stream.
Often times the former is a consequence of this strategy, but that's not necessarily the case.

In Namco's case for instance, the games don't change significantly between the arcade and console releases.
Tekken 6 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 were different from the initial arcade games because they were updated in arcades prior to being released on consoles.
The same is true of other companies like Arc System Works or Capcom.
I'm not too familiar with Namco's arcade releases, but in the case of those other 2 companies, many glitches still persist on the console versions of their games. For the most part the games are not further tweaked prior to console games (Ultra is like the only exception), and so on.

Errrrr. Ttt2 console version is vastly different from arcade. For starters, the arcade version is lacking like 14 characters the console version has. Plus, arcade version had stuff like hwoarang unblockable during TAs. If console version launched with that, it would have been crazy.

Weren't those changes in Unlimited?

Any guesses on the system that replaces high/low?

Different blocks for special and physical attacks?

That sounds like a cool and plausible idea. I doubt they will integrate type effectiveness into the game unless it is a highly diverse cast and not mostly fighting types like most people expect.

Dear god can't wait till the A-cho vids start popping up! How big do you guys think this game can get in Japanese arcades?

Quite big, indeed, especially if it's fun to play.

I mean, Namco already has two certified juggernauts in the form of Tekken and Gundam Vs. that consistently do well for them in arcades and top Arcadia popularity polls. A well done Pokémon game would just make their reign in arcades even more absolute.

I wonder if it's going to have a, "anime" styled 4 button system (3 attack buttons and a special). I could see this being true if the game has sidesteps and such.

Because the Main series was created with the handheld in mind, hence why it stays on the handheld.

I'm not seeing hardcore fighting game fans getting excited for this in my opinion. This game appeals more to the Smash playerbase.

I couldn't care less about Pokemon, but Namco Fighting brass behind this makes me interested, and it's the same with several other people I've talked with today in my local competitive scene.

Also, Smash has one of the most hardcore communities out there, lol.

What an actually good idea that both can be used as a strategic element and also ties to the pokemon series in a way that doesn't alienate fans.

I can't wait to see them not use it

Just watched the Trailer. Honestly? Not impressed. At all. Graphically? Wow. It does not look good! The animations looked pretty good but the feet didn't even look like they were on the ground! Textures weren't good either. I hope it plays well but I'm not feeling it. I hope these graphical issues are just because of Arcade first?

It's not even in arcades yet that was probably an alpha build.

Game seems sorta halfway-ish in development from how he responded to questions. He never straight out said that but it feels a little implied. I'd say even earlier if it wasn't a 2015 release. I can imagine the animations will look better before the Arcade release.

They could also NOT use a KOF inspired tag mode where upon defeating an opponent's Pokemon, both players get a small amount of time to decided which Pokemon to use in the next match ( the winner decides if he wants to switch (unless it's using the variation where the winner can't switch out))

Obviously, but when was the last time you saw Arcana Heart 3 get top billing at a tournament? Yes, we as the FGC play everything. Doesn't necessarily mean that every game gets players. I see it relegating to KI status and having a small base of dedicated players.

Who said anything about top billing at a tournament? And AH isn't the only animu girl fighter, Melty Blood got top billing at evo 2k10, and the community is all over its successor. Then you have all the other anime games in general, hell Skullgirls gets some play.

Also unlike all those doujin games or small fighting games, pokken is Namco, Nintendo and the Pokemon Company. Hell one can argue that Nintendo/Pokemon Company have done esports better than fighting games for years.

Not saying this will be for esports, but you decided to bring up tournament play anyway for what ever reason.

I hope this means they'll be taking the poll on this leading internet message board into consideration.

You guys think we'll get Mega Machamp? Like in ORAS?

His fellow Link Evolvers Gengar and Alakazam got one...

In fact, what if all the playable Pokemon end up being ones with Mega Evolutions like Lucario and Blaziken?
