Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Bottom screen on the n3DS is also finally bigger than the screen size on the DSi. Didn't like that the bottom screen shrunk going from DSi to 3DS, so it's nice to see it going back higher again on the regular 3DS model.

You, sir, have it correct.

For me, the DSi was the perfect mix of screen size and form factor.

Even though the top screen was bigger on the OG 3DS, I really hated the shrinking of the bottom screen. So I bought an XL but, honestly, it's too big for my liking.

N3DS is shaping up to be the DSi of the 3DS line which is amazing.

I'm so hyped.

A DSi done right. No cutting corners like removing backwards compatibility (DSi had no GBA port like the Lite) while still supporting features for future New3DS games. It's shaping up to be more like the GBC of the 3DS.

GBA games on VC, (and a darn good lineup to start with) would push me over.
It's already been made rather clear that GBA VC will not happen on the 3DS. Nintendo is not putting any GBA development effort towards the dead-end 3DS OS. The 3DS OS is not compatible with their future hardware, so any development on it now will be rendered worthless very quickly. They will save it for the next hardware, which will be using the Wii U OS architecture, and should theoretically be able to run existing Wii U GBA VC with little to no modification.

DSi couldn't have been what it was with that giant cart slot. Just like moving to microSD squeezes more room into the n3DS.

Old 3DS maybe. New 3DS is a different ball-game. It also doesn't have much to do with the OS.

The smaller N3DS

I will trade my LL to a normal N3DS, the new bigger screen seems big enough.

That white looks super sick.
Does anyone know if it's matte or shiny? It looks matte in the picture but you can never really tell unless you're in person.

The move to microSD is a welcome one, as I think they are still using the SDHC format although its easy to use SDXC ones provided you format them correctly. And microSDs cost as much as regiular SDs, you can use an SD Car adapter, etc.

Man the white n3DS looks might fine, but I always avoid white due to the color wear over time....decisions decisions.

Yeah, they get dirty and yellows pretty easily.

I'm probably picking up a black one, really hope that the west gets some good faceplates when it hits.

In fact the pessimist in me thinks that this new regular 3ds won't even be here because of there is something that is called a 2DS

I didn't really feel the need for a GBA slot on the DSi.

The DS phat needed one because the library was small at the start, but by the time the DSi released it had matured sufficiently to not warrant GBA compatibility.

Or at least that's what I felt, anyway. I had more than enough to play on DSi but for the first year of the DS phat I was playing GBA that I could finally see after suffering through an OG GBA.

Any news on performance improvements to existing 3DS games? Any impressions written about IQ improvements on the new 3DSLL?

Iwata said all existing 3DS games will run exactly the same on the new 3DS, so there will be no performance improvements.

I actually wonder how that's possible. I'm definitely talking out of my ass, but it would seem that if the hardware is better, the games would just automatically run better? Or am I missing something key?

Rewatching the preview video, I noticed that the underside and sides of the N3DS XL appear to have some sort of a textured appearance.

I'm assuming this has already been covered and I'm just behind, but is this actually textured like that? Is it slightly grippier? Or is it still smooth hard plastic, just with a fine-striped finish?

We won't even get the Famicom colors here, and I bet that we won't even get a white edition. It seems Nintendo thinks that the market doesn't like white handhelds.

Reggie flat out said it in September 2012.

"We have launched silver- and white-colored GBAs, DSes, DSis, and in our [North American] market they don't sell very well," Fils-Aime admitted. "So instead of approaching this lighter-colored product as a mass [product], we're going to look at the opportunity on a much more limited basis. You might see a limited-time offer with a white or silver 3DS XL, or we might colorize it slightly differently. But in terms of an ongoing SKU, the consumer has responded in our marketplace and said that, for a handheld gaming device from Nintendo, that kind of white or silver doesn't sell nearly as well as blue or red or even pink."

Would anyone be so kind as to calculate the dimensions of a 1:1 GB/C VC titles on New Nintendo 3DS? tired of Micro-sized GB games. Would this be actually closer to GBC size?
I'd really appreciate this too. The worst thing about OG 3DS was the choice between postage stamp sized 1:1 or fuzzy ugly fullscreen for GB/GG Virtual Console

Yeah, on Famitsu but it's in Japanese.

Thanks so much for this link! Got my very excited. The very first photo of the man holding the white New 3DS says this in the caption:

"Even when the system is tilted this much, the 3D footage does not break down. This made me smile when I tried it out in actuality because it's too strange and cool."

That's is pretty freaking cool!

White N3DS looks superb :3 So hyped. See, if NOA doesn't bring the white one and/or removes the colored buttons, I'm importing a Japanese one. I'm keeping my launch 3DS anyway, so I don't lose access to my existing collection of games.

Yeah just read that myself haha. That's actually really impressive. Sounds like this will be amazingly awesome.

It's odd how for me the most exciting aspect of the New 3ds is the 3d finally working ideally.

That's stupid, market and consumers change habits. Also US is a huge market, you can't just completely ignore a color because it sells less...

On the one hand, I agree. On the other, why mass-produce a color if it's just going to sit in warehouses.

Assuming they actually follow through, I don't see a problem with white and other non-selling colors being limited editions, or special editions. Get them to the people who want them without wasting money

If Nintendo's sales data shows that mass producing and selling a white model portable is a bad business decision then it's not stupid at all. What he said is that the white would still be available in limited edition models, so fans who want white will have the opportunity to buy one.

It's just absolutely not true though. The DS lite and Wii skyrocketed to the heavens like nothing else before in sales when ONLY white was available in the US....so much that I'd argue the color became symbolic for Nintendo systems... so I have no idea what Reggie is smoking but it's something potent. Sure the white Wii U didn't sell, but it was a dreadfully awful value and gimped to the max. The fact that there hasn't been one single white 3DS sku here, not to mention they stuck with pastel blue and red only Xl's for like a year, is as big of a marketing self sabotage as the name Wii U IMO.

Everyday I get a bit more curious about the new 3D Effect. Especially since there are some reports that it apparently really improves the experience. I'm surprised Nintendo went that route, because I was expecting even less focus on 3D in future 3DS revisions, not more. I thought the 2DS was a strong indicator for that.

This attitude is really cool I think. Instead of doing damage control (because, let's face it, the 3D Effect didn't catch on as expected), Nintendo is doing an offensive. It seems like they really want to make this feature work. They want to prove that it works. They want to show people.

Pretty big contrast to let's say Mircrosoft, who, when they experienced resistence to Kinect 2, immediately dropped it.

I hope TGS hand-ons from the folks trying MH4G out will tell us more.

Nintendo must have realized that the 3D feature is the one thing that separates the 3DS from the sea of mobile devices on this planet. No amount of resolution on a flat screen can create the same visual experience as 3D. I personally find the 3D effect very useful and appealing in games, and am very happy that Nintendo is improving on the technology. Those complaining that 3D is making them dizzy should start getting used to it, lest they'd really get left behind once VR becomes mainstream.

I love 3D, and the improved 3D has really excited me. I can't wait to try it out.
I'll be sad if Nintendo's next handheld ditches it, I really hope it becomes standard from now on.

You know, I just thought.. I never finished Pokemon Y due to disappointment in it, but if the eventual Pokemon Z can run the full game in 3D, full speed, then I'll probably give the game a second chance.

Seeing Super Famicom edition and the addition of the c-stick got me inspired to mock up a Gamecube version for the west. Thought I'd share here.

Again this is just an artist mock-up and not an actual product.

Much like the DMG01 OG 3DS design, this is too good for Nintendo to ever make it. =(

This will be bundled with F-Zero GX, the Orange version will bundled with Super Mario Sunshine, the Black with Eternal Darkness and the Silver with Metroid Prime.

That colour scheme looks great. Don't think it's enought to shrink my 3DS back down to a smaller screen though.

Yeah, there is no way I'm going back to a regular 3DS after owning an LL for awhile, even if this new one is slightly larger. It's not just the larger screens that I prefer, but also the form factor of the LL makes it much more comfortable for me (particularly the dpad placement).

That's a shame. I'd love to play Luigi's Mansion at above 20fps.

Framerate irritated the shit out of me in that game. Couldn't stand how unstable it was a lot of the time. It would have been nice to get a small performance boost, but I doubt I'd play the game ever again anyway lol

That seems like a bit of hyperbole..

They did confirm this is not coming west in 2015 correct? Any ideas why considering the platform is somewhat floundering here? I'm struggling to find the logic behind passing up a Holiday season.
