Been buying records like a madman this week. I was really stoked to find the Smashing Pumpkins boxset in the wild for retail brand new, but the Janet finds have been grail status for me.

Just curious with your set up here, are you using a mono switch for your amp (or phono stage) or a double Y cord for combining the stereo signal....or just straight up mono record through a stereo set up?

I really want to try the Beatles mono lps but I only have a stereo cart/stereo amp with no mono switch. So if thats what you are doing and the sound is still great then thats awesome.

Here is some info about a the double Y cord if you are interested:

http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threa...ords-in-true-mono-how-to-do-it-cheaply.81073/

I'm still doing some research on this but I'm still unsure if what is stated in the thread you linked too applies to modern mono records or only to old mono records cut solely with mono equipment (=pre 1968).

I'm really a novice in the matter and will try to look more into it. Still, the records play and sound fine on my stereo setup (without mono switch or double Y cord).

As they should. All modern records are cut to be played with a stereo cartridge/needle, mono or not. I guess there could be slight difference with surface noise without using a mono switch or double Y cord, but I rather doubt that it could affect your enjoyment unless you are an audiophile with golden cables ears

Some recent gets. My friend bought me the Ghostbusters RSD release which was very nice of him. The Menomena - Friend and Foe is so awesome. Now to complete my Menomena LP collection with I am the Fun Blame Monster!... that one ain't gonna be easy or cheap.

Pickups from the last month or so.

Tom Waits - Heartattack and Vine
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs Really surprised to find an original pressing of this in store. Must have just got put up on the shelf.
Tom Waits - Frank's Wild Years
Spoon - They Want My Soul Great album. Seeing them this weekend.
The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream Another great album. Seeing them next week.
Beck - Mellow Gold Somehow got a gold version for $20 used.

Also picked up the Neutral Milk Hotel box set. It's a really nice set that basically includes everything they ever did. My favorite thing in it has to be the Ferris Wheel On Fire EP. Some of their best songs are on it (Oh Sister, Engine).

Between Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Led Zeppelin all re-issuing their stuff I'm going to have to start whoring myself out at truck stops to afford all the shit I want.

Still waiting on Amazon to get the Black album back in stock. I had that shit per-ordered for weeks and they still didn't even get enough for me to get my copy and now every place around is sold out. Fucking lame.

It's on my list. Metaphysical Graffiti was a great score for me, as it is so hard to find. FYI, the Milkmen are releasing a new record next month...

I only got them until Metaphysical but I only recently (well in past few years) heard the rest (as they aren't on LP) and I really like Not Richard, but Dick. Hopefully they'll reissue the rest on vinyl eventually.

There's a funny story how Epe Helenius, one of the biggest record labels of Finland in the past, Poko, thought that Dead Milkmen was going to be the next Dead Kennedys so he ordered tons of copies of Big Lizard to his store, Epes. So now there's tons of Big Lizards everywhere in Finland. And now looking that Discogs it's like a 25 dollar record. Wow

I need to get Big Lizard. Sadly, I don't think their back catalog is going to get a re-issue treatment. Their new record is limited to 1000. I would love to get a copy of Soul Rotation on vinyl.

*Looks like I am wrong. Big Lizard is getting a rerelease for RSD in Nov.

How is the Vinyl Me Please service? I have an invite and I'm like a click away. Just wondering if anyone has any impressions on it.

It sounds neat and I wouldn't mind getting some records every month mailed in and getting to go through their $17 selections.

The idea seems cool, but I kinda feel like if I really wanted something, I would just buy it. If they're sending out things they feel every person should own, I would think I would have at least listened to most of the albums they would select and bought what I wanted already. Maybe that's just me. Could be cool though.

Edit: Now that I say this, I looked at the site and the current album is Madviallainy which has led me to search that album out and listen to it again. I don't own it, so yeah maybe don't listen to me!

Hmm, yea that's how I feel too. I go to one of the many record shops in SF at least 4 times a month, so if I find something I'd like I'll buy it anyways. Figured it could be a neat experience and maybe get a limited pressing of something I don't own yet. Though they didn't specify what the weight was of the vinyl (as much as people will harp on about that 90/180g isn't very different from each other), but I'd still like to know. Having something a bit thicker and solid just feels nicer and more secure. No shipping though! So that's neat.

I went through with it though and my service will start next month. I'll report back about my findings. $27 total for a monthly subscription, $72 for three months and $248 for a full year... Those prices seem right I guess.

Yeah I edited my post and I also signed up for an invite. Really want that Madvillainy LP now :|

I got my invite like 2-3 days later (even though they claim it'll take 1-2 weeks). Hopefully they'll still have copies of madvillainy because I don't own it as well and that would be neat!

Any way of filtering Discogs outside of the site? I mean going through 100 listings of The Doors LA Woman to find the lowest price is a right pain in the ass.

Like UK only> Price> and never showing anything but vinyl would be lovley..

There's an app called VinylPrice that does what I believe you want. It uses discogs database and searches for the lowest, higest, and median prices of specific albums or barcodes, if you have the vinyl in front of you to scan.

You know you don't have to go through each listing to list all the items for sale, right? http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?so...&ev=mb&ships_from=United+Kingdom&format=Vinyl

On the main LA Woman page, just click on "Vinyl and CD" then filter it.

Or maybe you already do this, idk.

Yeah I just kind of want a script or something that does it automaticly. There is no way im ever ordering from the USA or well most of Europe and I wont ever be buying a CD so id rather it just not be part of the search atall.

Minor but would make spending money go faster.

you know, i just bought Rubber Soul in mono, and it sounds fantastic. which other albums are worth buying in mono? i'm not a huge Beatles fan at all, in fact i mostly like the singles.

definitely buying Mono Masters, already have Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road in stereo. Wanna get the White Album in mono as well. what else is worth it?

As the albums went on, more time was put into the stereo mixes, White Album was the last to receive a mono mix, but, in my opinion I still consider the stereo mix of the White Album to be the definitive mix. Everything before that is probably best in mono. There's no "bad" Beatles album (well, maybe Yellow Submarine... but I wouldn't consider that an actual album), and they're definitely an album band, they have great singles but most of their best songs are on albums (the exception being the Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields double A side 45, which trumps most of Sgt Peppers). Revolver is their best album from start to finish, so I'd suggest that, and it'd definitely be best in mono.

Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Please Please Me. Mono Masters as well. All those early singles like I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Day Tripper sound amazing in mono.

I signed up for an invite, finally got it and actually looked at their past releases and have decided to pass. Thought there would be more classic stuff in there. Seems like a bunch of artists I've never heard of / newer stuff / stuff I already own. There's nothing in there I'm interested in I don't already have. I am intrigued as they said the next 3 months were pressed specifically for them, but it's not worth the $27 risk. Hell, I can buy Madvillainy for $16 on Amazon right now. The only thing that seemed interesting I don't already have is that Thelonious Monk record. They also had the Sisyphus record which was awful.

Got my invite... but... no Madvillainy and International plan is just ridiculous. $44 for a month and $37,50/month for a year. That's a lot more than the most expensive US plan and shipping is not THAT costly. I like the idea but come on.

I haven't listened to any of the vinyl mono releases but from what I remember from the last release, Sgt Peppers sounded the most noticeably different and is just sublime in mono so I'd definitely double dip. Get Revolver, too.

Must have in mono is definitely Revolver. Mono masters is worth it too for those awesome singles (Paperback Writer, Lady Madonna, Revolution, Get back most notably). But really everything up to the White Album is worth it depending on which you prefer.

The only album that is sub-par in my opinion (not the mono version, the album itself) is With the Beatles. Still, I have listened to the entire set back to back and there is not a single bad song. Incredible.

That Amazon autorip is so great for vinyl you buy there. I bought Misfits Collection I, and about 15min later, wham, there the album is on my phone. I guess I'm buying all vinyl from them now if this becomes the case with every release. I know it is with the new Aphex Twin I preordered.

I ordered Oasis - Definitely Maybe from Amazon, and it arrived in the worst packaging ever. It wasn't a vinyl mailer and my album came destroyed. Autorip is great though.

Is this a Prime feature or can anyone use it?
