Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

That artwork is absolutely outstanding.

You should check out The Laze's other albums. Here's another standout:

Also did I mention that the LP comes with a code to let you stream the original movie synched to the new soundtrack?

Pretty psyched to find two Tatsuro Yamashita albums (For You still has an old 100 yen thrift shop tag still on it) and an autographed Chuei Yoshikawa ("dear Charlie, I hope you can feel the warmth by one Japanese guy." 84-4-11)

Also: Eugene McDaniels' Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse, Whitney.

It took me this long to realize you lived in Japan. There's some sick record stores there. When I went in '04 or something we hit several tiny little shops that were like a closet with two bins of ultra-rare krautrock and psyche.

Whoa. That's pretty cool that you can find that stuff in Seattle. I guess it makes sense.

I mean,

That's just in the past 8-10 months, most of it from the same shop (near the international district, natch). There's always something new around, but a lot of it is obscure enough that I can't find any info or reviews and they've priced it outside my typical blind buy budget. Only exception was this (pretty valuable) Aragon record that I splurged on because it was kind of a Geinoh Yamashirogumi spin-off group, and thankfully, it doesn't disappoint.

Oddly enough, I can never find any YMO -- although someone had recently traded in a boxset on cassette that I sensibly passed on.

Funny. You would think there would be a bunch of it. Keep your eyes peeled for Sadistic Mika Band. I am sad that I let go of the record I had.

Here's a brag (sorry): I had dinner with Ryuichi Sakamoto once -- it was a little meet and greet put together by Sony, we ate then he played like six records (lots of Oval type stuff it was '99-00 at the time so...)

That is EXPENSIVE.

Yeah, but consider these points.

 • The Beatles albums on mono haven't been reissued since 1982, which was only in Japan. Consequently, they are in high demand which has driven up the prices of UK mono albums. You will not be able to find a UK mono Beatles album in great shape for under $80, even at that price you are pretty lucky. The White Album and Sgt. Pepper's monos are ridiculously expensive.
 • Unlike the recent stereo reissues, these will be all-analog and pressed at Optimal. The 2012 reissues were pretty much higher quality versions of the 2009 digital remasters. They were also pressed by Rainbo in the US, which had terrible quality control issues.
 • Aside from The White Album and Mono Masters, each of the single albums is priced at $22, which is pretty standard for most vinyl releases these days. Adding all of the separate LPs nets about $315. You can get the set for $336.99 on anywhere besides Beatles website. So, for about $25 more, you get a nice box to store the records in and a book.

Abbey Road was mixed in stereo and has always been stereo. You can buy a new vinyl copy of that already.

Question about vinyl remasters, is it not true that the original vinyl of a pre-digital album is the best master available? I figured that vinyl was the only way you could be sure of getting a proper master...but is it just as easy for an old vinyl to sound lousy?

The best case scenario is that the remaster is made from the original tapes. But as it is, they often are long gone, lost or being hoarded by someone in which case a minty vinyl can produce a 1:1 master.

The worst case scenario, like it was popular at times, is the just press the most recent cd issue on vinyl, which was just that: cd on vinyl, often compressed to hell (sound war etc.) or otherwise just having a mix unfit for vinyl.

And when remasters are done from original vinyl, it's not just "old vinyl" that someone bought from a flea market, but usually the mintiest copy found (hopefully). When kept properly, vinyl doesn't degrade or detoriate, dust or even small surface scratches can be cleaned and so on.

The best master is the original master tape the original vinyl was pressed from, not the vinyl itself. These master tapes were also copied and distributed to different locations/countries for pressing locally. Best case scenario is to find the original master parent tape or a second, third gen master tape which was maintained in pristine quality and create reissues from it, and perhaps re-mastering it to enhance quality here and there, which is all upto the mastering engineer anyway. What's done more widely is to find the master tape, digitize it at a very high bitrate, as tape will eventually disintegrate , and press vinyls from that digital source. Audiophile issues are usually all analog, they crate a master disc from the tape and then press vinyls from it, but they still make that high Rez digital copy for archival and digital distribution.

Is there a production problem going on?

It's anecdotal but I've received two emails from two different places this morning, Amazon and Merchtable telling me that my orders were suddenly going to be delayed..

Thats the email from merchtables.com

Shuri,

We got word from the vinyl pressing plant that recent delays have pushed back the release date of the Mitch Murder vinyl. They should now be shipping the week of October 21st. All customers who purchased the pre-order should have received an immediate digital download. The delay is a bummer, but it just means that more albums are being released on vinyl and the few pressing plants are having a hard time keeping up with demand.

Thank you for your support!

Mad Decent & Merchtable
My other order with them got delayed (another artist), and Amazon wrote me that my order of Metallica's Master of Puppet 2LP vinyl was delated until mid october too

I have the original Tron soundtrack on pre-order too :(

saw this elsewhere

this is hella fake, right?
It's not an official pressing but it's not fake. just a bootleg.

Only review I can find is one on discogs saying it's a bad pressing with an ugly looking cover, so only buy if you're a desperate diehard fan who needs it on (clear) wax.

yeah was going to say looks like a nice bootleg. I have a The Weeknd and a Kendrick Lamar one and they sound and look nice. Worth buying if your into his music
Edit: Ah yeah that site is legit, always gets the rap/hiphop bootlegs

Received the Beatles mono set yesterday. Man, it is a nice set. Too bad my power was out most of the day so I could only stare at it in anticipation. Today, though, I listen.

Been listening to them in chronological order with mono masters in between (god, that Paperback Writer!). Now up to Sgt. Pepper.

Fan-ta-stic.

How is the audio quality on the new Beatles Mono pressings? I saw the youtube video about the high quality packaging and being true to the originals, but now I'm interested in the audio from those that have theirs.

Also, anyone pick up Cocteau Twins Heaven or Las Vegas repress? I'm also curious of the audio quality of it since it's one of my favorite albums and the original is a bit high for me in price.

For what it's worth, as I'm neither a Beatles or audio specialist, they sound really great. Sound is clear, detailed and powerful. I think I only ever listened to the Beatles on stereo tapes or stereo (digital?) mixes on cd (not the remasters) before and I can definitely hear the difference. For heavy titles like Paperback Writer, Revolution or Back in the USSR for example, it's really mind blowing. But I honestly have no idea how it compares to the original pressings.

Last thing I need is a good Abbey Road pressing (already got Let it Be - don't have Yellow Submarine but who cares) and I'm set.

Been listening on a good-not-great setup (Rega RP3, yamaha amp, small klistch speakers), with stereo cartridge.

That's great! I'm not a crazy audiophile or anything but I like to know that the stuff that is repressed is of very good audio quality and an equal or close substitute for those that can't afford or find the originals. Thanks a bunch!

Just curious with your set up here, are you using a mono switch for your amp (or phono stage) or a double Y cord for combining the stereo signal....or just straight up mono record through a stereo set up?

I really want to try the Beatles mono lps but I only have a stereo cart/stereo amp with no mono switch. So if thats what you are doing and the sound is still great then thats awesome.

Here is some info about a the double Y cord if you are interested:

Wow didn't know I had to take the Mono output into consideration. Luckily, my H-K amp has an mono switch so I'm set. Thanks everyone for the input! Looks like these releases are really top notch.

Anyone have any comments on the Cocteau Twins represses?
