The idea that a simple role reversal is a problem because it's not ok for it to happen to a woman? I find that infinitely more offensive than the role reversal itself.

I have to agree. That kind of abuse happens way too much when a tsundere beats the everloving crap out of a male in most harem shows I can think of. When it happens to a woman, the IDEA that its any more right or wrong is whats sexist, not that it happens.

I tried watching Guin Saga when it was airing and found it dull and cliched before dropping it, but the clips of the dub really make me want to try it again.
Can't listen to the bad? good? dub at work but I wouldn't expect anything really out of Guin Saga. It was alright as far as it went but it was more like a standard JRPG tale than anything with all that implies. Of course, it's not helped that due to the series it's adapted from being so long that it kind of peters out at the end without any proper resolutions to the questions it raises.

Also, Happy Birthday to KuwabaraTheMan!

You don't even have to go to the tsundere violence dynamic (which I don't really like) to understand that relationship in Nozaki-kun, though. The dynamic between Hori and Kashima is basic manzai stuff. Violent slapstick physical response to stupidity is all over the place in Japanese comedy. Their relationship is no different from that of many other comic duos, and is meant to be read by the audience through that lens.

Nozaki-kun makes a point of not linking anybody through romantic feelings, outside of Sakura's one-sided love for Nozaki. Hori is Kashima's upperclassman in a club, and that is how they relate to each other. Forcing that pairing through the prism of intimate romance completely misreads the context.

I don't even remember what happened but Sakura still has the best faces

Majin Bone Episode 26

Good backstory, which at least makes the events of last episode feel truly not that serious. Still Victor and Gregory need to defect hopefully.
betting Shougo is saved by Victor

You know what? I agree with this as well. So many of these harem shows have the normal guy main character constantly getting the shit kicked out of him by a girl.

I wish there was a show where there were at least some consequences for that action!

Like, something like this:

Random anime plot I made up on the spot said:
A new, seemingly generic male character transfers to a school, yadda yadda. Only for it to be revealed that he's got a serious medical condition that triggered when the infamous, serious, tsundere girl couldn't help but end up punching him right in the chest. Guy goes to the hospital to get treated and the girl ends up getting charged for assault. But, before a verdict is reached and the girl gets some jail-time, the guy sees an opportunity to his advantage and decides to not have her thrown in jail, but rather for her to work for him and his family to pay off the medical bill she caused them to have.

I'm not gonna lie, I'd watch an anime with this kind of premise.

Also, Happy Birthday to KuwabaraTheMan!

I admire your perseverance. Suddenly School Days doesn't seem so bad.

School Days 09

In the face of Katsura's idiocy even one note bullies come of as a voice of reason. Even after being left out of the dance I struggle to believe she will finally change her ways.

That new addition to harem sure moved in quickly. I'm not even surprised anymore.

At least the second half of this trainwreck is delivering in the lol department.

You're quite right. Domestic violence of any kind is NOT good and on a personal level I lost family in a horrible way because of it, but the way its presented in anime is quite often comedic slapstick in nature and more focused against males. WOmen in anime are NOT delicate flowers. Many times, though sexualized, they are pretty tough independent characters, who at least dont depend solely on a man to get things done. Actually the men seem dependent on the women to achieve any success, and many otaku have this submissive nature in which this sort of female dominance excites them.

Blue Spring Ride 12 END

I enjoyed this, but I cant say I cared about anyone besides the main couple. Kou was annoying but I slowly became sympathetic towards him.

The little exchange between Tanaka sensei and Kominato was hilarious. Otherwise the episode felt extremely slow and dragged out. Like they ran out of ideas or something.

My biggest disappointment was the lack of cat in the show. It was featured prominently in the OP and ED but had a total of 10 seconds of screen time the entire show! I figured Kou would have adopted it by now. Ah well.

I wouldnt mind a S2.

Yeah I always liked the idea of taking a normal series that contains this generic tsundere slapstick beating and turn that aspect into something more realistic and serious (be it for a one-off episode).

Would be so great to see Tsundere girl punching a guy full force after she fell onto him and actually ends up breaking his nose while everyone around goes "what the fuck TsunGirl123, it wasn't even his fault...are you fucking crazy?"

Overall I think it could be really entertaining to take a show with a—compared to reality—ridiculous world or premise and then have a bunch of episodes that with a more realistic and serious approach.

Like, what if in NIsekoi the entire police and criminal gang stuff actually mattered for once. Or maybe the harem protagonist gets called out on his many quasi-girlfriends and how these girls feel about that.

This is why TWGOK S3 was actually entertaining to me while I didn't think much about the previous two seasons. It was fun to see how the MC deals with the kinda ridiculous (yet standard for this genre) harem he got going when it suddenly turned a bit more serious.

Love Live! S2. What a monster in sales...

Mahouka is selling well, and KLK didn't sell as much as I expected per volume.

They don't, but the author certainly plays around with it.

This is kind of like reading about how Mahouka was not about incest.

Maturity, bitches.
Just saw a certain someone's recent additions to their to watch list on hummingbird. Oh you naughty boy.

Finalizing my list with some new notes and picking the first five I'm going to watch next. Going with an order of "older-recent-older-recent-older" when it comes to picking them to start off, while also making sure I get a variety of genres in the five, too.

Doubtful, Id really be interested in NA sales of anime.

How is Love Live! so popular, I don't understand.

Wake Up, Girls! 10

Some Engrish juice there.

The preliminaries of the idol competition to become the official rivals of I-1 Club gets underway and WUG competes against all kinds of other groups like demon idols and nurse idols. And they win of course, a mother and daughter makes up and everybody are happy, but then more problems are revealed.

That's equivalent to asking "Which drove you less insane?"

Hey, I thought YamiBou was entertaining in it's randomness.

Megumi Hayashibara has a role in Crossange, apparently. Why she'd come out of retirement for a trashy Sunrise mecha show is beyond me.

There is Nielsen Videoscan which tracks point of sale retailers, but TRSI isn't one of them, so it's pointless as two companies mostly sell through them.

In the past, some distributors would quote numbers, but it's more rare now as there's little reason to publicly tell customers what your numbers are. Funi heads Adam and Lance often taunt people by going "subscribe to Videoscan to find out" when the service costs 10k per year and you can't publicly tell anyone what the numbers are. Thankfully people at 2ch do that for Oricon for us, but no one in the US dares leak anime numbers.

The Rose of Versailles - 01

Hmm, A rather wonky start for this one, mainly because I thought the pacing was kinda bad. Oscar is pretty cool, and her dad is an asshat (though it's not too hard to see where he's coming from). The art direction is good and the animation is OK, but it gets better during fight scenes. It has that same narm/unintentional humour that Dear Brother has, especially when it tries to be serious (i.e. Oscar going "How dare you use reverse psychology on me you asshole!" and the fight between Oscar and Andre following that). The music however is great, especially with the OP, it's fantastic. And it may be just me, but the ED reminds me of the theme from Gravity Falls. *shrugs*

Ashita no Nadja 06-12 (France Arc)

Compared to the relative smoothness of the England stories, France was more of a collection of one-offs, with varying tones, themes and characters. The land of Croisse in a Foreign Labyrinth, though obviously set some decades after that series. This is what Precure has done to me, because when I saw Nadja's CGI jewelry music box, two thoughts crossed my mind. One is "it's too early for her to get that, that's more of a mid-30s thing" and two "So, Crescendo Nadja?"

Episode 8 was probably the standout episode of this arc. Sylvie and Raphael's tragic love story, and that beautiful duet at the end of the episode. The return of Oliver was romantic in a different sense. So many guys expressing some degree of interest in her - and she has her own love interests that aren't any of them - and the show's barely started. And then there's episode 12. TREASURE HUNTING. The treasure was inside them all alo- no, it was
a field of lilies.
Nadja's and Ken's increasingly ridiculous fantasies were fun, and it provided a nice break after the more emotionally heavy episodes in the city of Paris.

With all the talk of lost loves, and Sylvie and Nadja's conversation in episode 8 in particular, this show's got some emotional depth to it. Writing is often more important than visuals, and I say this because it was 2003 Toei. This was the year they literally used a plush doll as Luna when they weren't using terrible CGI, and the ballroom scenes, well...

I can't say the composition of that image is all that great. Nadja, the background and the dancers clearly look like they're existing on separate planes. It's a sign of the times, and episodes at the ball don't come up super often, so I can let it slide. The dancing with Dandelion is more pleasant to look at, in many ways. (And I'm pretty sure Nadja's outfit influenced Hime's Sherbet Ballet form in the present.)

The grand tour of Europe continues.
