Please remember that what I write is just my personal opinion of the game so far. :)
The combat could very well get repetitative after 20 hours of gameplay, and the enviroments so far isn't very varied. There's one big, open map with a lot of rocks and brown buildings.
As for the story, you dont get much presented at the start. You have to progress with story missions and treasure hunts to piece the puzzle together of what has happened to you and Celebrimbor. It's interesting, but I have more fun wreaking havoc on the different groups of Orcs and leveling, rather then chasing these answers at the moment.

With that said, I still enjoying the game so far. I dont need more to be entertained.

I still havent completely understood the Nemesis sytem though.
There seem to be a lot of events that come and go, where one or more orcs battle for promotions or strenght. These seem to change location and type at random.
For example, while exploring, I can find an ongoing duel between two different Orcs, batteling for the role of captain.
If you chose to intervene, you can somewhat control the result (If you shoot orc A in the head, orc B will win, and get promoted and strenghtened).
I guess this is how you're supposed to manipulate the chains of command and internal power struggles.

But whenever I complete a main mission or die, the AI seem to finish all these events based on randomness or statistics.
So there is quite a lot of promotions from left to right, that I dont quite understand if I could prevent or not.

I'm actually more impressed that the world is completely dynamic and outside of your control.

This is a large world and not everything can be within your sphere of influence.

Thanks for the ongoing impressions. Though I don't think you're intended to be able to directly influence every orc conflict or event--one man can't attend to every orc at once--and that's probably why you see the results of these events happening elsewhere. I think this is for the better, as the world would feel more alive if there's all these things going on despite your lack of involvement.

Edit: Dammit Grief

Yeah I want stuff to happen out of my control and view otherwise it feels so convinient that everything happens when Im there.

Kudos to Monolith for having the balls to go from this super-heavy scripting and holding the players hand.

That sounds awesome!
I wanted this kind of dynamic world since forever!

Shit I just realized that Monolith are the devs who made FEAR.
That just makes me so happy :)

This in a gaf post sounds really good to me !

I've been looking back at my past posts to see how many times I've been talking up this game, and it's cool to see so many other OG hype men from the first gameplay video thread. Ironcreed, VanWinkle, SJRB, and everyone else who knew this was going to be special from the beginning: we've been vindicated.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul mod had a bit of this. Vampire factions fighting for control n stuff. Glad to see this type of dynamic content being used more in open world games. Hell even something as simple as a rival gang trying to take over your territory in San Andreas was a breath of fresh air.

Haha, nice! Forgot I even posted in that reveal thread, but I remember being blown away. So happy at the reception the game is getting, and I especially can't wait until Tuesday to play it.

I like this aswell!

Im just wondering what the triggers are. Like, when does the game decide to end all the events and run the results?

At one time, I managed to kill half of the low level orcs on the Nemesis board, and they all stayed dead untill I died myself. Then all the other orcs were strengthened and and promoted, while the empty slots were taken by newcomers. (And in one case, the orc had surviced and came back with more strenght and a payback wish).

The only conclusion I can draw from playing is that it seems to happen when you die or complete a main mission, but I dont know if there's more to it yet.
Maybe the promotions, strenghtenings and replacing all happen in the background as you play aswell, and are just summarized for you upon death?

I am probably going to get this after seeing reviews I was not expecting. I guess I had made the mistake of lumping this in as a cash in movie franchise type game. It's looking like it could be the Sword & Sorcery open world game I thought I was going to have to wait for The Witcher to provide. I have wanted an open world S&S game forever.

Here is my problem. I recall seeing something early on saying that maybe they had stolen AC animations or something. This only concerns me because the only AC game I enjoyed at all was Black Flag. It was tolerable. The fighting mechanics and "feel" of the movement and the bugginess and so many other things feel off and eventually wear me down to quitting in frustration due to a lack of immersion. I'm just not a fan of much of anything in those games.

This game has me very leery because it looks SO similar in so many ways. My question is, will I hate it if I hate ass creeds? Is it AC with a new skin? If it is or if it feels the same control wise and in enemy engagements it's probably not the game for me. Also, this might help, I like the Arkham series combat but dislike AC combat.

God dammit GAF. Didn't even knew about this game's existence until earlier today. Damn this OT, damn the review thread. Fuck this shit, wallets gonna cry. Pre-ordered.

I hear you man.
I knew about the game, but I wasn't going to buy it because it was just another LOTR game.
Then damn, I ordered the game after reading the rune/weapon and nemesis system.

It's difficult to answer this question seeing how the game hasnt been released yet D:

This ugly rumour is something that keeps popping up and it's been addressed by Monolith several times, for instance at Gamespot:

But Shadow of Mordor design director Michael de Plater has flat-out denied any claims of copying code and animations. "Honestly, we built everything from the ground up for this game," he said to GameSpot.

Monolith did look to UK developer Rocksteady and its Batman games for inspiration, though. "We absolutely, at the inception, looked at Batman, in their combat and stealth," he says, while maintaining that "as soon as people play [Shadow of Mordor], any experience we've had where people get their hands on, it's totally its own thing."

The combat system is more akin to the Batman Arkham series, Sleeping Dogs or Remember Me. The main things it takes from Assassin's Creed is the parkour traversal.

Yep, going to pre-order this on PS4.

How long until I can pre-order a game on PSN? If this one is getting released on the 30th do I have until the 29?

Sorry. I did not mean to perpetuate that rumor. Didn't know all that. To the other person who commented I realize the game is not out yet, I was just under the impression that some people here had it early or might know more than my limited knowledge of it.

Batman combat sounds awesome and has me hopeful. I'll do some more research. The nemesis system is what has me highly intrigued as I sort of like to make my own internal stories up as I play. Seems like it would give a nice framework for that.

Very dissapointing open world, has nothing on the locations in the Lotr movies, was really hoping for an epic open world ... sigh

If you like Batman and didn't complain about that "open-world" game.. why this one? They are basically the same thing. In Batman, I could travel all around and things more or less look the same. It's all about gameplay to me.

I have this thing preordered. I was going to wait on getting it, but seeing as how the reviews are really good, I might bite at launch.

The game can look incredible at times. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

:( Did you get a good amount of time in both of the main locations?

PC or console, PC or console, PC or console, PC or console AAAHHHHH.

Really torn on this issues. I wish DF had something up, I want it on the big screen but it's cheaper on PC and it'll probably look better.

I would have been right there with you guys, but I quit posting in the Shadow of Mordor threads early on because I got tired of arguing with people that - despite being a massive Tolkien fan - I didn't share the view of some that this game's existence was an insult to the man's legacy.

PC if I were you. I assume the PC version will have mods also.

Well after reading the reviews, watching gameplay and reading the thoughts of some GAFers I decided to give it a go, I got a £15 Steam voucher to play with for my birthday so I may as well.

I guess the only other game ill be buying this year (reviews pending) is The Evil Within.

Can someone pls link me to a good video that's similar to a GiantBomb Quicklook for this, preferably at least an hour long, not a developer walkthrough but showing something of a vertical slice of the game

Thanks :)

(I'd check Youtube, but I assume it's full of annoying people doing Let's Plays :p)

It's mostly in Mordor, yes? Mordor never seemed like a place that'd get me a really awe inspiring open world, heh. Maybe if we did something like Moira, I can see a Metroid/Dark Souls-esque open world in a place like that.
