Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

I would have been right there with you guys, but I quit posting in the Shadow of Mordor threads early on because I got tired of arguing with people that - despite being a massive Tolkien fan - I didn't share the view of some that this game's existence was an insult to the man's legacy.
Odd position to take by them. Yours is a position that should be commended my friend. The open-mindedness needed amongst the Tolkien community around the world.

I've been looking back at my past posts to see how many times I've been talking up this game, and it's cool to see so many other OG hype men from the first gameplay video thread. Ironcreed, VanWinkle, SJRB, and everyone else who knew this was going to be special from the beginning: we've been vindicated.

Lawds. Time flies, does it not? Here we are and it looks like it turned out even more promising than we imagined.

Please tell me "invert aim" affects the on-foot camera, and not just the bow aiming camera.
Sorry for the self-quote, but can anyone who has the game answer this? I know some people can just adapt, but I just can't adjust to a non-inverted camera.

Haha, nice! Forgot I even posted in that reveal thread, but I remember being blown away. So happy at the reception the game is getting, and I especially can't wait until Tuesday to play it.

My wife found that topic video before me, vividly remember as I was asleep in afternoon and she came rushing in to show me something awesome (I sleep a lot with having MS and heart condition with the pills) and this was it.

I've never seen her so exited for a game and she has been like it ever since so far as to preorder online Xbox 1 day it went up. We have made sure Tuesday is free. I've always had a gut instinct it's going to be good and it never lets me down.

3 more sleeps :)

Thatta guy. Open-mindedness is always appreciated by the silent majority. You're a cool dude.

I've watched a large number of play-sessions of SoM ever since it was announced...and I'm still amazed by the variety (and overall quality) of the Orc designs; they look fantastic.

As usual Dantès, you just get me :)

The combat is more arkham, the traversal is more asscreed.

Traversal is my favorite part of the Asscreed games. In fact it was Prince of Persia: Sands of Time that really scratched that itch where entire levels were essentially climbing puzzles. I really wish that kind of gameplay will appear in this generation some day. It seems that it was perfected in the one and done shot of the Prince of Persia game.

A standout memory with that was climbing the outside of that huge castle on the cliff to the final boss.

I am not sure how much of that is in Shadow of Mordor, but I figured it was worth a shot discussing so the idea goes into the wild for a mechanic that isn't fully realized any more.

Obviously an insult to the man's legacy is strong, but you could you explain why you don't find this game's approach... distasteful?

If there are difficulty levels, I will definitely be starting this off on hard.

Also, streamer is obnoxious.

There aren't any difficulty levels, I asked one of the guys who was streaming at like 4 AM today. The game just scales how hard the orc is to kill with its powerlevel I think.

Because I have never been bothered by others playing around with the Middle-earth Legendarium. The reason for that is fairly simple: all of the adaptions of Tolkien's material are completely incidental to what actually matters - the material itself. The books we've all come to love will always be there; you can be a Tolkien enthusiast and never give a rats ass about anything but what the man himself (and his son Christopher) have written. You can completely ignore the films, video games, table-top RPGs, LEGO, board games, action figures, etc. None of it's canon, none of it is being spliced into Tolkien's books, none of it really matters at the end of the day (if you get my meaning). Peter Jackson's alterations to The Hobbit aren't permanently changing the book , and Monolith's liberties with the timeline and setting aren't either.

Plus, I'm all for more people getting into Tolkien - no matter how they come to it. It's been a while since anything Tolkien related has been regarded as cool or relevant, so the fact that so many people who aren't even fans of the Lord of the Rings seem to be latching onto Shadow of Mordor and are excited to check it out makes me happy. It looks like the game may indeed generate some new Tolkien fans, which I fail to see as a bad thing.

One thing I don't like are all those:
-notifications on screen
-symbols
-glowing bodies when in stealth mode

It really may break the immersion. Will we be able to turn them off?

You can turn off outlines, counter icons and effects (like the stun animation) and objectives. Think there's one more thing I'm forgetting.

Edit: Lol. It's on the previous page man.

Good points. Do you think there's a point where an adaptation can become so unfaithful to the original works that it jumps the shark, so to speak? Or does it not matter as long as it ultimately points back to Tolkien's works in some manner?

Haven't there already been several streams of the Xbone version posted here?

I thought it looked fine.

Nobody said it won't look FINE but I guarantee it won't reach parity with PS4 and PC. That's the only reason they would hold videos back when they've already lifted the review embargo. Speaking of which, have you seen any reviews for the ONE version? Going off a stream isn't going to tell you shit when it comes to whether it's 1080p and 60fps on the ONE or not. Reviews however have said that it is that on PS4 with occasional dips in fr.

I'm wondering whether to get this on the PS4 or PC.

My PC specs are:

i7 2600 OC'd 4.4 ghz
780 Ti Classified
16 GB memory.

I'm thinking PS4 since I know I won't be able to run the game at ultra textures which I heard the PS4 version has, but also the exclusive DLC the PS4 is getting.

Where did you hear that?

Pre-loaded my copy of mordor a few days ago on the Xbox One, can't wait to get my hands on this. I'm not even a huge LOTR fan but this looks spectacular.

Nhaa I hardly think so, if so console version may be mid - high settings.. but who knows if that is like stuff is really important to you just wait for the DF analysis.

IMO steam is a better ecosystime that PSN or Xboxlive to throw money at, also payed $35 for it because I sold a bunch of steam cards.

Oh absolutely, but I think it would take someone who clearly has utter contempt for what Tolkien was trying to do to make even me throw my hands up and walk out of the room while yelling, "I CANNOT DEFEND THIS, PEACE OUT." Despite their own fudging of the timeline to fit the needs of the game, the team at Monolith clearly have a passion for Tolkien. And I would say for the most part it doesn't matter to me personally how someone came across Tolkien for the first time ("Hey I just saw The Hobbit porn parody and decided to check out these books and they're just swell!"). Just so long as someone doesn't come in and demand to know why Tolkien chose to not have Legolas shield-surf down a set of stairs because that would have been way cooler than what happens in the book.

PC or console, PC or console, PC or console, PC or console AAAHHHHH.

Really torn on this issues. I wish DF had something up, I want it on the big screen but it's cheaper on PC and it'll probably look better.

Me too man. I went on ahead and pre-ordered both of them. I'll finally decide come early next week. PS4 is looking really good though and it does have some extra content for it.

Not really the biggest Tolkien fan.
Hate the assassin's creed games.
Thought Arkham was okay.
Monolith studios you say? Day one.

Surely you jest, PC without a doubt.

Rewatching LOTR..so fucking good. Gets me more hyped and also buying battle for middle earth 2 on pc..very hard to get but i need that game.

I really want to give the Xbone version a shot, but I find the lack of information disturbing. All I want to know is the resolution / framerate. By them not saying anything about it (religiously withholding info, it seems), it's making me want to know more.

Then again, I could just buy it for PC.. Bought an R9 290 Directu ii a few months back.. Need more games to test it out.
