PAL Charts - Week 39, 2014

Nooo Pokemon Black and White are gone. Did Argos run out of copies? Or did Fifa exert its pressure.

It didn't chart in the 3DS top 5 either. Top 5 you say, don't you mean top 10? Week ending 6 September 2014 was the last time the 3DS had a top 10.

Oh and SmokyDave will be happy to hear the Vita and even the PSP still have a top 10.
I noticed (and mentioned) that in the last thread. I wonder why. The Wii and DS have top 5 instead of 10, and have for a while.

3DS owners are gamers, not dirty casuals who pick up any old reskinned pos.
Nah, they're largely kids that get bought 1st party titles on holidays and birthdays. I'd say that's become obvious by now.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Oh, right. Good debut for Fantasy Life, given this was FIFA's week too!
And not a bad hold for Hyrule Warriors (again, given all the new entries in top 10).

On tier 2 launch countries FIFA is being heavily advertised as an Xbone game. If Microsoft were banking on this to somewhat offset the almost one year launch delay then they completely failed...

Same here in Germany, every Fifa ad ends with Xbox.

Retailers make their own ads and promote the PS4 + Fifa bundle though.

The X1 version didn't even chart on its own at Webhallen in Sweden (pretty large chain for gamers)

the X1 bundle at 9 is with Fifa 15 and Forza 5 though.

The numbers of last gen really show how much of a difference it was between ps3 & 360. It still amazes me none of that transferred over to this gen.

FIFA has been pretty synonymous with PlayStation for the past decade, at least in the UK (and probably other countries in Europe). I think it's more of a culture thing than anything else, something Microsoft doesn't seem to understand as they muscle in on the action year after year. (That's not to say they haven't nibbled away at the FIFA/PS attachment).

Edit, look at the breakup of sales on home platforms:
PS: 451670
XB: 499720

Looks like FIFA's new home is slowly becoming Xbox.

This is incorrect. 360 sold more FIFA for almost all of last generation. If anything, the PS4 is just helping Sony close that gap.

That's not correct, the YoY drop is kindly provided, so we can work out that last year PS3 sold 320k and 360 sold 506k. So a gap of 186k in the 360's favour, and a ratio of 1.58:1.

Fast forward to now and (rounded down)...
Next gen only, PS4 vs. XBO - 307k vs. 211k, or 1.45:1 in favour of the PS4.
Platforms, PS vs. Xbox - 451k vs. 499k or 1.1:1 in favour of Xbox platform.

That is quite a big shift assuming my maths hasn't failed me.

it's one of those shitty legacy edition, so thank god that it didn't.

By the way, I'm still confused as to why PES leaves months to FIFA to sell.

Because Konami aren't very smart. If they were they would release it a week before to cannibalize sales. Wtf is the point of releasing a football game in November

It wont even break the top 20 imo

I would assume it's probably not ready, but it's also just plain dumb to not have it ready. They should have thrown some manpower behind it to have it ready to be out at least day and date. Especially since judging by the demo they finally have a product again that can actually compete.

It's already been pointed out twice, guess I meant in general. I wasn't really thinking about last gen at all.

Wow would you look at that. Fifa results are a bit surprising but if the bundle and marketing weren't there I wonder if that gap would be more? Is Fifa a multi-year deal like COD? I foresee a similar result with COD:AW. Only thing good from this is hardware sales increase for the weeks leading on and after launch. Looking at amazon the PS4 Fifa bundle if it was introduced earlier could have done quite a bit of damage and completely offset the XB1 bundle.

This is why hourly charts mean little - For this week so far that isn't the case - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsellers/2014-09-22/videogames/ref=zg_bs_tab_t_bsar#1

XB1 Fifa is 7, PS4 Fifa 18.

I wonder if new IP's like Evolve and The Division will fare better?

Konami doesn't have EA manpower and they are trying to gain back the hardcore football fans who want more simulation and less 9-7 scores. This is the worst Fifa since a lot of years, PES will do fine, not in UK because UK never understood anything about football (even when PES was light years ahead of Fifa in quality, Fifa still sold more in UK, while in France, Italy, Spain PES was king), but the rest of Europe will give it more love.

Wow at the FIFA rise from 2009 to 2013. Has EA ever released figures to the dev costs of FIFA? Probably not.

No.
They made a shitload of money with the Fifa Ultimate Team though, so even if the costs went up, they are making truckloads of money for EA.

Ms are bundling the wrong games. I think they'll get more sales if they bundle new games not existing IPS that everyone know is coming to a lot of platforms.

Give UK some credit, PES was nibbling away at Fifa during the PS2 days to the point where EA moved the yearly release date from October to September, Pro Evo also used to stay at the top end of the charts for as long as Fifa to.

But you know, Japan, HD, EA pulling their finger out of their ass and whatnot.

HMM that sounds like a very good idea. PS4 and destiny? Xbox 1 and evolve?

But with MS creating a destiny bundle, i think sony beginning with fifa will match them to take sales away

They're bundling IP known to be popular - for example FIFA in UK. It makes sense generically: you tempt large customer base with deal for a really popular game.

Bundling new IP is generally seen as riskier - if the IP isn't a big hit then bundle won't do much business.

The question is would sales for XB1 version have been the same with or without the deal? If essentially the same then MS is just wasting money and if not then the sales would be lower and MS are somewhat forced to spend just to slow rate at which PS4s lead grows.

Either way unless things change dramatically by Jamuary is say basic trends for most of the world will have been set.

MS just has the less desired product this time around and it doesn't look like these deals are going to change that.

The only thing that's going to work is some serious marketing/image refresh (kinda what Sony had to do with the PS3) and maybe a more meaty official price cut. As things stand, Sony isn't even breaking a sweat.

I think this was a no-brainer when they decided to ignore the Wii U despite the lack of any competition from Fifa.

I'm going to assume that Hyrule Warriors debuting at #2 in France and #1 in Germany means that Destiny held up better in France, seeing as the other option probably isn't so likely.
