Man...so much complaining about non controllable party members from a lot of the people that praise the KH series. Can you wait to see how the game plays before complaining just to complain?

Tabata has said exactly the opposite. "It is still very much an action game".
In his post he's referring to his expectations and personal definition as to what that term means.

This isn't KH though. This is FFXV, a different game.

So far I think Tabata is doing a fantastic job on damage control in this Q&A. He's addressing various question head on and not evading anything. He really has cleared up a lot of concerns for better or for worse.

- He says that the E3 gameplay battle footage was playable, but an earlier version. I believe he said you can still play the game on that level, but it was showing off more advanced moves and so on. I think he said it was a prototype concept that they are working towards in development.

- With regards to the "hold button for awesome" comments, he says that the defensive stance drains MP, so you can't just hold the button forever and be invincible. There are also more technical aspects of evasion which are more advanced. For attacking, you hold the button for basic combos, but there are also advanced action aspects with regards to timing and attacking in certain directions, or influenced by equipment.

- He confirms you can jump in the game. The battle system in FFXV is Active Cross Battle (AXB), and Noctis is the only playable character. You control Noctis because the entire battle system is built around him and how the other party members interact with him.

- He also talks about the the weapon switching too. Instead of active weapon switching during combat, it uses player settings prepared in advance. This is likely part of the gambit-like system he talked about before. The weapon used is automatic based on the conditions, but it sounds like the player has control over how those conditions are determined.

The new video was pretty good too. The game is still pretty far away, but I think he's making serious efforts to address concerns and get people excited for the game. It's really good PR compared to the normal stuff from S-E.

I must be playing a different series then. Most FF story revolves and evolves around the maincharacter. Without the hero, the journey wouldn't begin.
Everyone is there to support the main hero. The party is created because they want to go with the hero and help him.

I still don't understand how the ability to switch up Player 1 status relays that feeling of a party. You are still surrounded by other cast members even if you are in control of a different character or stuck with one character.

You make fair points. I think the expectations stem from older videos showing the switch in play, FF Type 0 doing it, and well, we've advanced so far technologically it just seems like a given. Then there's how unique the characters appear to be in battle.

I think XII was the only one where you could actively control every party member in and out of battle. I feel like XII was way ahead of its time, and come XIII they walked backwards.

Anyway, the game still looks interesting enough, and who knows, they may add character switching into an International release. Would not surprise me if that has tons of new features that get dropped in the first release.

It doesn't seem like that to me with all the deck stuff and really two button simplified gameplay. It more like simplified action game with strategic elements

He never called it a super deep action game, but it's still an action RPG where you have to engage the strategic elements in a simplified action game manner. (MP determines your ability to evade/guard instead of your twitch finger speed)

There's no rule where ARPGs have to be like KH to qualify as an ARPG.

Reminds me of FF XIV.

Yoshida had constant streams during ARR development and very open to answer to fan questions.

Duckroll ftw.

This isn't KH though. This is FFXV, a different game.

I'm aware of that. My point is that you front need character switching for a game to be enjoyable and that people need to hold their judgement for the final product.

Do you look at someone painting and say midway through their work "OMG, that line is too thick! Ughhhhh this color is wrong! This is horrible! This needs more blah blah blah"

Wait for the finished product.

When asked if the battle system is more like KH or Type-0, he actually evaded the question by saying that it's more like FFXV. He seems pretty adamant that they're doing something very different and new here.

Well, seems quite different from Type-0, but definetly between the two games seems closer to Type-0.

I could say the same thing about the people getting excited for the game, too :p

This presentation has really convinced me that Tabata is a very aware person, and he isn't just all talk when he says he cares about what fans are talking about and thinking about. This entire presentation is directly targeted towards everyone who has been talking about FFXV since TGS. I'm impressed with his honesty and passion.

Good to see him being open and honest. Still hoping for the the chance of a more manual way of playing like was mentioned in the patent. Nice to know jumping is still in.

Wow they really are sticking to the plan of showing us the game, I'm very pleased.

I won't speculate on why...but there is a real difference in information post and pre-Nomura.

Nice summary! I was ok with all the news lately and this clarification is even better. The approach with going aggressive promoting the game shows at least some confidence. I like it.
