Shinji Mikami's THE EVIL WITHIN |OT| Where's everyone going? Tango?

Honestly, I really dig the letterboxing and it's never been a thing for me. My plasma has really good blacks, so i'm not noticing it much.

That being said, above and below the bars we display content - save status, subtitles, etc. If you're disabling bars and manipulating the game to go full screen (on an extra wide display), you'd have to disable that content and play the game without getting the information it provides. Like the 60 FPS part, it's not a supported option.

Appreciate all the info Matt. Your not going to be able to please everyone but I think you guys are putting out enough info at this point to satify most.

Hey all. We just finished putting something together that answers many of your questions. Per this thread, you'll want to take note of this one.

I’ve played through the game and I’ve also seen the game played at 60fps on a PC powerful enough to handle it. It looks great, but personally it didn't look right to me. I felt like I was seeing a "soap opera effect" and that took away from the atmosphere and feel that I think the default setting captures.

Well thanks gstaff.
I will play in "soap opera" mode if that doesn't break the game's logic, animations, physics etc.

gstaff, probably can't answer this, but I do actually really want to play on Nightmare difficulty my first time playing Evil Within (not Akumu, I'll save that for another playthrough), especially hearing from some that Survival is pretty easy so far and supplies are pretty good on that difficulty (and I play most my games on hard difficulty the first time I play, including a lot of old survival-horror games), would it be possible on PC to unlock Nightmare difficulty with debug commands for my first playthrough?

Vanquish had a cheat to unlock God Hard on a fresh save. Maybe this does as well.

why can you pre load games so early on xbox one ? i just saw its oct 12 for ps4 why ? i thought the publisher regulates pre loading stuff ?

Hey, it also seems PC players don't need to worry about the 4GB VRAM requirements. They used this ridicolous logic for recommending the 4GB VRAM:

Why does the PC recommended ask for 4 GB of VRAM?

The PS4 and Xbox One both have 8 GB of unified RAM which can be used as both system and video memory. Because our PC version is functionally identical to those platforms, we recommend 4 GB of system memory, and 4 GB of VRAM for the best experience.

They equate the 8 gigs of the consoles to 4 gigs VRAM and 4 gigs system RAM, which isn't applicable in reality.

Thanks for the replies Gstaff.

So the game functions acceptably at 60 FPS? Animations aren't sped up for example? What issues can we expect?

As mentioned, I checked it out on someone else's PC. I know it's unsupported... Mikami intended for this game to be 30 FPS. Generally if we have something unsupported, that means issues could arise. It also means that's it's not a focus of the development team.

I'll try to pop in and answer more questions as they arise, but I have to catch a train for Comic Con.

Hmm, not sure. If we have that option available, I'll post it when I post the other info.

Survival is really hard. I beat the game in over 18 hours and had something like 116 deaths.

I don't game on PC, so I guess the framerate thing doesn't bother me much. I've known this was 30 fps for a long time and didn't care.

Two new thing of impressions. I asked this question:

"I'll ask the question. Scares are subjective, and honestly while I expect the game will have a few moments (and I know it can have a few tense and startle moments, from the PAX demo), have you experienced anything you would say is scary, or creepy, or struck you particularly in these first 6-7 chapters?

On that accord, you should be getting close to half-way through the game (either half-way through chapter 8 or at the end of chapter 8 would be the half-way point, depending if its 15-16 chapters). So far, what's some thoughts on the game, like how good, compared to recent horror games, compared to the old RE games, to you, how does it compare?

Sorry if a bit hefty, can decline them, just very curious."

One replied:

"The atmosphere is really oppressive, especially chap 5, the enemies themselves are not really scary imo. Probably because Survival has a lot of supplies, way more than I expected and when an enemy can drop 6 bullets I don't feel that scared."

The other giving more detailed non-spoiler impressions;

"I think RE4 was the best game of the 6th generation of consoles. Its pacing was awesome as you said and this feels no different than that. Yes, so far it does lives up to the legacy of RE4 so far. And in some cases it surpasses it imho. Like atmosphere, art design, characters, story...

This game is tense and at times scary. But the game's main point is being tense and putting survival above all else. First of all there are really rare games which i would call horror games like Silent Hill 1-2-3 and maybe 4., Fatal Frame series, Amnesia The Dark Descent. This game is not a horror game, if anyone is expecting stuff like the games i counted, they will be disappointed. This one is more survival-action oriented one. And when it comes to scares the games scares are not jump scares. It scares you mostly because of the atmospehere. It just keeps you on your toes because of that but never like the jump scares of RE 1-2-3-5-6. It don't have anything to do with old RE games except 4. It just takes 4, changes setting, makes the tone more serious, darker, takes away most of the cliche story related stuff of it and gives you more gameplay mechanics (fire, upgrading, stealth) to have fun with.

There are not many games i could compare this to, it is much more action oriented when compared to the likes of Silent Hill and it is much more serious when compared to RE4. Think of this as an adult man's RE4. (RE4 fans please take no offense as its one of my favourite video games ever but the story was too shitty or childish for that matter). Also say hi to my fellow GAFfers.

Well I thought I was getting Xbox One version but apparently not. I'm going in later tonight. Hope to see you guys at launch with all my thoughts, reviews, etc. I've been waiting for this for what feels like forever and now I feel very surreal about it all. Embargo is at 12:01 EST am Oct 14th, I can confirm.

Sounds as bad as I was fearing. Yet they keep promising ,,classic/nostalgic horror'' even until now. Keep your umpteenth RE4 clone next time, thx.
What the fuck happened to you, Mikami? Your ass used to be beautiful...

Hoping this will at least be on par with Dino Crisis, which wasn't that atmospheric, but at least was fun because of the tension coming from tough ass enemies.

Hmmm... I wonder when GMG is planning on sending out pre-order keys so we can pre-load the 50gb download? Does anyone know? I just sent a support ticket in for S&Gs so, if nobody has gotten an answer yet, I will post in here again when I do get a response (if it's before the keys are released).

Generally, keys are sent out just before release. Sometimes sooner, depends on when the publishers make keys available.

Yeah, I know the standard drill, but after the USF4 upgrade fuckup, I'm still awfully sketched out having pre-ordered through GMG. :\

I know I could've pre-ordered on Steam directly, but at a $15 difference, that pays for The Legend of Korra... :|

Person who posted the second impression above has this comment to say going into chapter 8.

"I have zero bullets for my pistol, zero slugs for shotgun, zero ammo for the rifle, one shitty syringe for the health and 2 shitty flash bolts for the crossbow :("

Says so far he'd rate the game 9/10, and the point reduced mainly has to do with technical things on the PS3.
