According to a statement made by Square Enix, the SNK Playmore lawsuit was a little more than just a standard issue copyright complaint: it was a criminal complaint. As a result, Osaka Prefectural Police conducted a domiciliary search at the publisher's headquarters on 5th August.

Outraged by such a strong overkill to the mere mention of some of its materials in a comic, Square Enix is now seeking a "declaratory judgment" proving that it in fact does not infringe on SNK's copyright.

According to Square's statement, the publisher "has been cooperating fully with police investigations since the domiciliary search, and will continuously maintain the cooperative stance with good faith."

The lawsuit of the millennium is still going on apparently

Searched, didn't see a thread.

Raiding SE over something a manga artist drew was pretty harsh tbh.
Either way SE's GANGAN publication has some quality manga that's been adapted, so I can't really hate them.

I would play a fighting game comprised entirely of million/billionaire characters. Their meter can be growth potential and their supers can be liquidity.

Fuck SquareEnix? Why. I don't even like SquareEnix anymore, but...
No, you see, any chance to hate on SE, even if they're not the primary aggressors, must be taken because reasons.

Yes SNK shouldn't waste time on those police raids and instead bring in King of Fighter 14.

New KOF is in development right now.

Also, legal department =/= the developers

Huh, this is months old.

No, it's not. The first lawsuit was from SNK suing SE because of copyright infringement.

SE is suing SNKP now for being agressive. Please read the thread.

Man, they should restart Hi-Score Girl, make a time skip to show the characters living in the early 2000. SNK were dead by then, no more arcades from them, no more copyright infrigement. Done.

...SNK still released Garou, The Last Blase and two more KOF games around that time?

Well, is in hiatus and dunno how the mangaka would feel about continuing a love letter for Arcade video games when two video game corps are having a legal e-dick competition.

Maybe by then the manga will be about pachislots!

Hopefully Square wins tons of money from SNK, and then SNK has no other choice but to use the rest of their money to make Garou Mark of the Wolves 2, so they don't have to sell out.

Or make more pachinko machines, which is more likely...

Hey, who allowed them to join the battle? They're way too strong to compete! I mean, what's up with that? Someone is going to have to take that company down!

The "overkill" on the charges I guess is fair game, but I'm still refusing to believe SE didn't infringe on copyright, when the information available says SNK wasn't aware of the fact they were credited in the manga until the production company in charge of the anime asked them if they could use their characters and music in the anime, and that they tried to contact SE and didn't receive what they thought was a good response to the matter. It sounds like whoever they talked to either never transferred them to the legal department, or they got a lower level person at the legal department who couldn't help them and didn't let them talk to their superior(s).

In all honesty, it's probably whoever was the editor of the manga's for not informing the author that he should make them different enough but still the same type of character. Also whoever was in charge of putting the licensors' names in the back of the book considering SNK is one of the companies listed, implying they had their consent. If they had their consent, they wouldn't be suing Square Enix.

I think the serialization is (still) halted.

AFAIK, the guy responsible for whatever shit that should have been done to avoid this didn't get any punishments (or only minor ones), while the author of the manga seems to be bearing the hit of all this. No serialization and voluntary pull out of the manga.

Personally, I hope Square-Enix loses this battle.

Some may say that it was luck that brought them victory...

Well that doesn't matter to me, because the bottom of the line is: this company won!
