Is that series on Netflix yet? Seems like every other Spider-Man cartoon has had its turn on there by now. Hell I think even meme-tastic 60s Spider-man is on there.

Okay so I see what all comics are actually a part of the "Spider Verse" event, but it mentions having other comics necessary to understand what's going on. Can anyone give me a good list to start with going into this? I have absolutely -no- actual comic book background, most of what I know about Spiderman is from the movies, the old TV show, and GAF talking about it (I read the threads! But not the comics themselves. :/)
I'm particularly interested in Miles Spiderman and the events leading up to that, this Spider totem stuff (wtf?), and Superior Spiderman, but don't know which comics to actually get.

Marvel Unlimited is a subscription service for digital Marvel comics. For 9.99 monthly, you get access to over 15,000 comics in Marvel's library. Sometimes there are great deals; in July one month was 0.99.

Ah, that's cool. Now those great deals, can I get those and stockpile months? Or is it just like I'll sign up for a subscription and one month notice my bill is cheaper?
And this might sound like a stupid question... but is 15000 a lot in comic terms? It seems like there should be billions of comics right now from Marvel, am I gonna notice some huge gaps? Or is pretty much everthing worth anything on there?

15,000 depends on what you want to read. Most of the newest stuff is unavailable, but I read a lot of the older runs that I was always interested in. I read a couple of Dardevil runs, Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, and Astonishing X-Men. There's a lot of stuff available, one month wasn't enough!
Sorry for not being more specific. If you want to just jump in at the start of the event, you'll be fine, but here's a more comprehensive timeline breakdown for you:
Amazing Spider-Man Volume 2 #30-58
The first part of J. Michael Straczynski's run on Spider-Man, this series will introduce the concept of totemic spider-gods, introduce you to Morlun and Ezekial and begin to introduce the concept of the Web of Life and Spider-Man's impact and role in it.
Amazing Spider-Man Volume 1 #500-
This is still part of JMS' stuff, they just wanted to go back to the first volume's numbering scheme because 500 is a much more impressive sounding milestone than 59. The key arcs here are The Book of Ezekial (#506-508) and The Other (#525-528). The rest is all flavor text if you find yourself enjoying the run, but those two storylines are essential for the same reason as the above.
The Gauntlet and Grim Hunt (Amazing #608-637)
This storyline mostly is meant to reintroduce and evolve classic Spidey villains like Electro, Rhino and Kraven, but it also brings back the Web of Life from JMS' stuff. It's super important to the status quo of the Spider-Family today; it's where the current Spider-Girl, Madame Web and Scarlet Spider's stories really begin.
Spider Island (Amazing #663-673)
Dan Slott's first major arc in Spider-Man, this is where Scarlet Spider comes into his own as a character, and leads into the next big thing;
Superior Spider-Man (Amazing #698-700, Superior Spider-Man #1-31)
This is where Superior Spider-Man comes from, how Spider-Man 2099 gets to where he is, explains what happened to Peter Parker most recently in the comics, and is the most recent major arc that will have huge repercussions here in Spider-Verse.
Scarlet Spider Vol 2 #1-25
This follows Kaine, from the above storylines, as he goes to Houston. It further expands on the concept of The Other, introduced in the second set of JMS' stories here, and brings everything up to speed.
The Current Spider Books- Amazing Vol 3 #1-6, Spider-Man 2099 #1-5, New Warriors #1-12
These are the most recent happenings to the characters on the road to Spider-Verse.

Ah, see that's the deal breaker for me. I get that they want me to pay for the recent stuff separately, but honestly I'd rather pay $5 more for the new stuff (like Spiderverse!) than be restricted to old comics only.

Marvel Unlimited is essentially Netflix for comics, if that makes sense. It has pretty much everything available, with new issues hitting the service 6 months after they're released. It would be the most cost-effective way to read all the stuff you're looking for.
My personal recommendations:
All of Superior Spider-Man. There are 33 issues out now, not including the teamups. You can get all of them in TPB form if you'd like. There are 6 volumes for the main series, with 3 volumes of teamups. There's also Superior Foes of Spider-Man, which is amazing but not really related. Still, everyone should read it. Fucking great book.
Spider-Man 2099. He pops up in Superior, which led to him getting his current run. The 5th issue comes out on Wednesday, so it's still early enough to get caught up quickly. It's a good read.
If you want to get into Miles without reading all of Ultimate Spider-Man (it's really good, but that's a lot of stuff to read), you could start at Death of Spider-Man and Death of Spider-Man Fallout. You'll see Peter die and Miles get introduced. Here's his first TPB volume. There are five volumes of that, then you'll want to read Cataclysm.
Post-Cataclysm, Miles is in Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man. Issue #6 comes out on Wednesday. Miles is also a member of All-New Ultimates, which just came out with issue #9. It's good stuff. Great Cloak and Dagger.
Subscribing to Unlimited for a month would be the easiest way to do it. They have all the Superior up with the exception of the recently-released Edge of Spider-Verse books, and all of the Miles stuff up to the current Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man. Get a month subscription and burn through them.

I really feel like Bendis had a cool idea with Miles Morales, and he's managed to fail at executing on it at every conceivable level, and that's a real shame. I want to like Miles, I'm just not being given much to work with here. Also, the road to Spider-Verse claims the first victim that actually bums me out:

I do really like the concept here that Morlun and his family are actually scared of crossing into Earth-616 and of Peter Parker there, since the last time Morlun was in that Earth, he died. I'm guessing this is how Peter is finally going to learn about The Great Hunt, now that someone in Earth-616
Spidey 2099 continues to be my personal favorite of the spider-family ongoings right now, even if the art is still pretty weak.
Edge of the Spider-Verse #5
This is literally Evangelion fan-fiction, and it even has the cast of Evangelion and TTGL's Simon show up in the background, and it is glorious. This isn't just my favorite book this week, it's also my favorite issue of Edge of Spider-Verse and maybe even my favorite spider-thing since Kaine got cancelled. it looks like he might actually be the real deal and alive again. He has all his memories, his grave was empty- even if it's somehow not literally Peter, it's as close to him as one could actually be. It would be pretty hilarious if Bendis brought Ultimate Pete back to life for the sole purpose of murdering him again in Spider-Verse.
miraculously just saves the day with his OP venom blast bullshit that solves literally all of his problems with no consequence or risk. Again. This time he manages to solo Osborn in a one-on-one fight without breaking a sweat because of it.
RIP best J. Jonah Jameson, you were the coolest dude in the whole Ultimate Universe.

The Spock that was transferred to the future never came back to the present, and is still out there. He got sidetracked trying to get home and stumbled into the Great Hunt.
I don't think we actually know if they can use the 90's animated universe Spider-Man. Hopefully he'll be able to chase Morlun to the ends of the earth.

Marvel rarely brings it up, and are using these events (this and Hickman's incursion plot) to put and end to it I think. DC used it all the damn time and it got really annoying for awhile.
I wonder what had Morlun so spooked, that was really odd. Maybe 616 Miguel tastes like coconut, nobody likes coconut.
