Whart game is this?

I demand to know: Where is our Nintendo Direct! With New 3DS and moar amiibo details on other games than SSB and suprise holiday reveal!

Gief info nao!!

Still can't decide if I want the regular or XL when these come stateside! I've owned an original 3DS and an XL, and I vastly preferred the XL. But I think a big part of that may be the better build quality.

I really like the idea of the faceplates, and I like the colors of the N3DS better than the N3DSXL. I'd also enjoy being able to comfortably put it in my pocket again. I will probably miss the bigger screens a bit, but I'm looking forward to things looking a bit crisper again. The pixel ratio of the XL is not the greatest.

I'm mainly just hoping that the increased screen size of the regular N3DS will be a happy medium between the OG 3DS and XL.

Also, the design of the regular thing just gives me DSi vibes, which had my favorite design of any DS.

How much would it be to upgrade from an XL to a new XL?

Gamestop usually runs promotions to encourage this type of thing, but I don't think any details have been announced yet. I know when I upgraded from the original 3ds to the 3ds XL, gamestop had a promotion that you got $100 trade in credit for the original 3ds... so it wasn't too painful to upgrade.

I plan on doing the same thing this time around, assuming that they run the same promotion.

Remember though, since Nintendo's online account systems blow, you need both systems in hand at the same time to do a system transfer. That means sitting in a wifi enabled gamestop for 45 minutes or so before handing over your old 3ds or negotiating with them so they let you take both home and return with your trade in the next day once you perform the system transfer.

Pro-tip: If you can do the SD card data transfer at home (you don't need the new system in hand to do it - just copy from old card > PC > new card - if that's your plan). You'll shave about 90% of the time required to move everything from one system to the next by doing so.

Do those of you that import Japanese consoles/handhelds actually understand Japanese? I'm being totally serious. I just wonder how you go about playing with the language barrier.

OK, if it wasn't obvious to me before it definitely is now. See those rubber bumpers on the top, just above the screen? They're definitely taller than on previous models, including the OG 3DS XL. That's a good thing.

Lets hope this model doesn't scratch itself like all the others now.

Wow that's awesome! thanks for the information! You just pop the new card into the new system and initiate the transfer process in the same way? Or is there some way you need to alert the system that you did the SD card data transfer?

While I haven't imported a console in ages (PS2 era), it's really not all that hard. Many Japanese games either have their menus in english already, or use katakana (which are easy to learn and are usually transliterations of english words).

Many games don't require an intense understanding of the language as well. Platform games, for example, are usually pretty light on story and even more complex games usually have online guides to give you the gist of things.

- Old SD card in PC (with a reader), copy folder titled 'Nintendo 3DS'
- New MicroSD card, copy and paste folder from PC to the card.

When going through the system transfer menus, it will give you the option to say 'It's cool, New3DS - I did this on the PC already, bro" :)

I never had a problem with screen scratches. I assume it's from having the system pressed under other objects in a bag or something. I carry my systems, both regular and XL in a front or back pocket and they are fine after a year. My pockets are by no means large or loose. I do get the finger oil "ring" from the circle pad on my original upper screen, but it wipes off.

My launch day 3ds phat and xl have never been in a pocket or pressed, they just on my desk charging most ( I game mostly home) and still got scratch marks on my screen protector. It's just shoddy design.

Also both my 3ds have the wobbly hinge which is annoying (since day one). I hope I have a better luck with the N3DSXL

Neither my OG or XL are actually scratched but if you look closely there is likely a greasy line along the screens. It's mercifully hard to spot when playing.

I do hope the New SKUs can avoid it altogether.

I really hope when it launches in NA I don't get a yellow LCD screen. I hate that.

What causes such a thing? Some screens being cool and some warm?

Screen protector is the variable here. It seems fairly common with that added thickness. The screen protector is also likely made of softer plastic.

I'd be willing to bet that virtually every report of "scratches" from closing the lid is with a screen protector. The two halves obviously touch occasionally, shown by oil residue, but scratches shouldn't happen unless there is a material between the two screens that is more abrasive than plastic.

I have no screen protector. I have marks from the edges of the lower screen visible on my upper screen. Used to clean it off but now I just ignore it.

Just to note, the n3DS units come packed with a piece of foam in between the 2 screens out of the box. Probably indicates that screen scratching is still a problem. Also probably for loss prevention for units that get scratched during shipping.

That's actually the normal thing to do clamshell style devices. I remember my launch model 3DS had a foam slip and that was before the screen scratching stuff started to come to light.

My LL didn't have one in there and arrived with a nick on the top screen aligned where the bottom screen bezel was :(

I bet these screens still scratch!
Why does the bottom screen have to protrude in the way it does anyway?
If it was flush it would look a lot better and the scratching likely wouldn't be a problem...

why couldn't australia get the black one

i mean, i probably would have still got the XL anyway... but this definitely is the best looking of the bunch, and there's a chance I would have got it instead. the slightly bigger screens, lighter weight, smaller size, and great looks, could have been enough to beat out the XL.

Sold on getting the New 3DS, and cannot wait for it. Hope there's a Nintendo Direct announcing the US release date soon
Problem with wanting a direct soon is that it makes ZERO busyness sense to have one for the New 3DS this year.

Let's hope will get a BIG Direct in January with an offical annoucement of the New 3DS and updates in some important Wii U games. For the Wii U this would be fundamental to carry some good will for the system going forward. Extra Zelda footgae would before the E3 blowout would be a wise decision.

I've recently decided to try to get back into console gaming and I really want one of these new 3DSes... damn it Nintendo! Why you do this!?

I already have the regular 3DSXL! I guess I'll just have to sell it to GameStop...

I asked before in another but with these in the wild, are the screens better or the same as the old 3DS screens? Is the contrast and colour saturation better on the new 3DS and Xl?

Here's a bit of a copy-and-paste from a reddit thread I made about Smash on the New 3DS.

-----------------------------------------

I just got my New 3DS in the mail yesterday, and I've been playing for hours now. It feels one step closer to real Smash, and I honestly feel like I have a bit of an unfair advantage when I play online. I absolutely LOVE how ridiculously responsive the new C-Stick is. It's crazy fast, it helps my aerial game a ton, and it's brilliantly placed. My thumb sort of naturally wants to C-Stick below the buttons, but after a few hours of practice, it seems very natural. The only thing is that I'm using the normal New 3DS (as opposed to the LL/XL), so I'm used to a slightly larger grip. That being said, I'll be getting the Smash version of the New 3DS LL (XL) in a couple weeks when it releases in Japan, so I'll have a better idea of what it feels like, then.

But seriously, I LOVE this new little C-Stick nub. The addition of ZL and ZR buttons are nice, but you can't individually change their function... It seems the ZL will always do the opposite of L, and ZR will do the opposite of R. (Unless they're just always preset for ZL being shield and ZR always being grab... I should test that.)

That stupid Sheik "chain grab" is a lot easier with a c-stick, and obviously so are smash attacks. I'm a lot less sloppy now, and I feel like my options have gone up by 20-30%. Seriously, if the 3DS Smash community ever really gets going, everyone is going to need one of these. Not to mention, for those of us that play in 3D mode, you practically NEVER lose the 3D effect. It's fuckin' crazy - there's an infrared camera near the normal camera, and it tracks your face in real-time and adjusts the screen (WTF? We have this technology!?) to always showcase the 3D effect. I personally love playing in 3D, but in a game like Smash, it's usually too much of a liability. But I'll tell you what, it's actually useful in gameplay (with the New 3DS) because the screen on a 3DS is so small, it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly where the characters are and what they're doing. If you have the 3D on, it gives you depth as well as normal visual, better allowing you to see the characters. Love it.

I seriously recommend this New 3DS to anyone who thinks they'll get competitive on the 3DS. It's only available in Japan right now, but that didn't stop me from buying a couple of them. I'll get the US ones, too, when they come out.

I can't think of anything else about the New 3DS that's different... The control stick feels a lot nicer, but that might just be because it's new. It seems more precise. Oh yeah, worth mentioning, Smash loads about twice as fast on the New 3DS. Everything - first screen, matches, online, home menu, everything. It's just a faster system. And, yes, it still plays Smash at a full 60fps, even in 3D mode.

Worth getting.

If I had any complaint whatsoever about Smash 3DS, it's that left and right smashes feel like a crap shoot. When I watch what I'm doing, I can see that when they don't work, it's because I'm doing more of a down-right or down-left than a pure right or left. Still kind of annoys me in the throes of battle though.

C-stick definitely helps that. A lot.

Any findings with this?
I play with L being shield and R being grab, but I was hoping to be able to have L/R be shield and ZL/ZR being grab!

Also, man, I can't wait to try the new 3D out. I always have 3D on when I can, but sometimes the small viewing angle is disruptive.

There has been a LOT of labeling the Stereoscopic 3D as yet another "useless ginmick" from Nintendo. Posts like the one from Dacvak above makes me hopeful that the improved 3D is good enough to make detractors open their eyes about what exactly Stereoscopic 3D adds to gaming and how meaningful it can be.

The 3D effect goes beyond of just working as a presentation tool and could have meaningful impact for improving the gameplay experience. The amount of positional feedback the user gets from stereoscopic 3D can be fundamental for correcting navigating virtual environments. A very ilustrative example is Mario 3D Land and 3D World, the former shows how benefitial the enhanced sense of dimension is for correctly judging jumps. The latter shows how that camera perspective chosen to present the game to the player (and shared by both games) losses some functionality when the stereoscopic 3D is removed.

Are there any differences in the screens (like better picture quality)? Or are the old and new 3DS screens about the same?

I already own an XL, but I think I'm gonna have to pick another 3DS up once they release here in the North America. I hope we get that white. That thing is one nice looking piece of hardware.

Man, I thought I was the only one who thought this. I had WAY more difficulty positioning myself in 3D space in 3D World than in 3D Land. With the camera angles they chose for those two games, 3D visuals were a huge help in making sure you knew where you were at all times. I've never struggled to simply jump on a goomba correctly in a Mario game like I did in 3D World.
