Seriously? FUCK Cross-Gen games!

OP, you should probably take a different approach next time than being aggressive, it's why the thread turned hostile.

I sort of agree with you. Last gen has been out now for what, 7 years? People know that a new console is inevitable, they should be prepared. Save a little here and there and you're set. But in truth, some people just don't care about improved graphic. I don't personally understand it, but it is what it is. My own Father still won't buy a blu-ray player because he doesn't think there is much of a difference than DVD and he owns a large HD TV. He prefers to spend less on his DVDs I guess. People have their own priorities and you shouldn't judge.

Yes, I would be annoyed if a game like Fallout 4 was cross gen. But it's way too early for a thread like this. It hasn't even been a year yet. I don't blame anybody for not upgrading. Now a year or two from now and games are getting bogged down because of cross gen, you'd have a point.

Cross gen is cool, because people are able to play games without having to spend their hard earned cash (some more hard earned than others) on a whole new console.

95% of the time, people having access to games is more important to me than getting better graphics.

Thank goodness for cross-gen games.

According to your train of thought she should have to suffer a life of bare minimum because I couldn't land an executive job in time, which is pretty messed up to be honest.

Oh for fuck sake!

I would have thought someone who probably gets cares allowance, would know the difference between levels of disabilities.

Your girlfriends disability sounds severe enough that there is no alternative other than state aid and I dont think anyone would have a problem with that.

The op hasn't given any indication that its anywhere near that level, as he says he is able to work.

I was all set to agree with the OP when I entered the thread, thinking it would just be a post about cross-gen games holding things back...but it lost me with the "why can't the poors just save up" stuff. Yikes.

OP who are you to decide what systems the developer are releasing their games on? It's normal that they release their games on the PS3/360 and on the PS4/XBOX One. But OP is like "No, The ps3/xbox360 peasants dont deserve all game that are made in 2014, they should force themselves to buy a Next Gen system" Nah I wont buy a PS4 untill Bloodborne, so...

Same problem I have. My best friend who always games with me is off/on depressed for various reasons. I knew he wasn't going to get a PS4 day-one, and I was fine with that. A year later though, he still doesn't have one because he "can't afford it".

My current situation is I'm a customer service rep until I can get something better in IT. My wife has a pretty good job. We're like a sort of mediocre poorer middle class, but we manage money well. Him and his wife? His wife is a nurse at a hospital, and he's got two jobs in radiology. He's not broke at all, never has been. But he always claims he "can't afford" anything.

I'm fine with my friends not owning a PS4, a PC, a Wii U, or whatever else I own. But my best friend? A friend I've known since 6th grade? Insane. It would be different if he wasn't into games. I mean we both took off work for Diablo III and Borderlands 1 & 2! He loves his PS3 and I know he wants a PS4, but he's incredibly cheap when it comes to spending over $10 and always has been.

A few years ago when we were playing Titan Quest, his video card broke and began outputting graphics with jacked up polygons such as:

HST8Dwv.jpg

He dealt with it for several months until I finally peer pressured him into buying a new card. He actually had a panic attack buying it. To make sure he kept the card, I went to his house afterward and made sure he installed it. When he played Titan Quest without screwed up graphics, he was completely happy and said he didn't know why he was pretending like he couldn't afford it.

So yeah OP, I sorta feel your pain. I need the next Borderlands to hurry up and come out ONLY on current-gen/PC. Cheap friends!

OP, I'm going to out this out. There are people who are employed who are getting less money than you are. I will include myself in that (retail which these days you don't get near full time hours and of course they are variable so makes it hard to coordinate 2 jobs). I'm getting good hours that week if I make 200 American $'s, and that is not even £'s which are worth more.

I did buy a ps4, but that's from money I had saved up and I consider it an irresponsible purchase but still wanted one. I certainly wouldn't be telling people if I could afford one you should too. For one not everyone has money saved up. Two, it's smarter to keep that money for emergencies (for example if your benefits get messed up like you mentioned is a fear. Maybe first you should save up a rainy day fund then start thinking about entertainment once you have a savings (since you can). Hell, because I managed to it's the only reason I'm not living paycheck to paycheck (which still wouldn't pay my rent and food honestly).

In the end while i don't think it is bad some one on benefits gets some spending money, I do look badly on you for looking badly on others for not spending their money on what you want them too. Especially when you have this attitude that if you can do it, so can they. You should be feeling lucky you can do that. Not everyone can (and that includes employed people). i wish I was getting enough money I could actually save towards getting a ps4 rather than eating into my savings. And knowing every purchase I make is making it sooner for me to have to try to live paycheck to paycheck. And to be fair if my landlord wasn't also my bf who is forgiving on rent I probably would have been better pushed not to buy the ps4 cause then definitely every purchase I made was one closer to having no roof over my head. Would you still wish for people on a similar living situation to be forced to upgrade or not game at all just for your convenience?

We'll see more of a move to the new consoles when the must-have exclusives happen, it's that simple.

Holidays will help sell a lot of units to people who won't want to go back, but it's going to come down to exclusives.

Also, there's no way in a million years that I could ever have afforded a £350 console while on benefits. I was literally weighing up what I needed to buy to eat at that time. A £35 game was a decadent luxury.

To be perfectly honest though, it's kind of a catch-22. A lot of people in here are saying they have no reason to upgrade, and the exact reason they have no reason to upgrade is because they are happy to buy an inferior version of a game. To be perfectly honest, cross-gen games have clearly left their mark on this year, since this is probably one of the worst years for gaming I can remember. I'm not saying the games released this year are bad, but most of them are quite mediocre.

I got grudge sucked!
A lot of cross gen games started on the older consoles, since they have a large install base, it makes sense, especially today to maximize your potential audience. I also don't remember too many people enjoying playing uprezzed versions of Gun and other PS2/Xbox games on the 360.

Also, I have two kids and don't have the money to spend $400 on a new console right now. I won't until one of them is sub $299 at least. And while I know its not altruism on their part, I appreciate that the PS3 and 360 haven't been straight abandoned like the original Xbox was.

I am interested to see how Shadow of Mordor turns out. I've heard there are some differences/limitations in the nemesis system, and then I've heard that its fundamentally a different game. We'll see I guess.

Oh bullshit! My girlfriend is stuck with a life long condition which I've opted to care for and as a result am on the benefit system. She is completely unable to work and needs somebody to take care of her, something I couldn't afford on my measly pay leaving me little choice but to do it myself. The government chooses a rate from one of 3 options and decides which category we fall into for disability, care and mobility then gives the amount they chose. They never tried to express any concern over what I should or shouldn't be spending it on.

When the disability is a lot more severe so is the amount you receive so some people will be on better than the average wage on the benefit system. For someone who has friends on it you have a really poor understanding of it and are extremely short sighted.

According to your train of thought she should have to suffer a life of bare minimum because I couldn't land an executive job in time, which is pretty messed up to be honest.

nobody is saying disabled people should not get help.

the op clearly could work as stated by his "over qualified for work" but doesn't. he uses the money for ps4s and then bitches because his working friends don't buy one.

Cross gen is a testament to how good the 360/PS3/Wii generation was. Millions of gamers who don't feel any need to upgrade because the previous consoles are still pretty damn great devices... some 8 years after they were released.

But that argument QUICKLY loses all it's momentum when you realize that people who're in employment are on a lot more money that I am, and it only took me a month of saving a little out of three benefit payments

So if it's a big priority for you why don't you save up. It only takes you a month and then buy a PS4 for your friends/family?

OP it will be like this for at least two years, you can't just fob off the massive install base the 360/PS3 have, so if people don't feel the need to upgrade yet then that is their choice.

It's a good thing that companies aren't forgetting last gen, it would be a massive mistake and they would lose out on all that extra revenue.

There is always a cross gen period for a while whilst people look to a reason to upgrade, it's only the more dedicated/hardcore gamers that look to buy a console mainly in the first year of release.

OP is spending a bit too much time on GAF. Time to visit the real world where gaming is a small hobby, where people don't give a rat's ass about "p"s, UI,IQ, fps, all that other jazz. Their old hardware still lets them play the latest games and that's all that matters. They'll come aboard when the prices fall.

Some people need to reevaluate their priorities in life.

I would be fine with cross-gen if the PS3/360 versions got their own teams.

Just building games around last gen limitations and up porting them is pretty shitty imo and it benefits no one. The PS3/360 versions would struggle to run, screwing over last gen owners. Whereas next gen owners get a game that makes zero use of the more powerful hardware outside of resolution.

This is a good and bad thing though.
Splinter double agent is a perfect example.
The different versions are literally 2 different games . With the older version actually being better .

I personally don't mind the version for all since a competent team can push out great work. Alien isolation is a good example. Looks fine on whatever platform and for the most part plays to its strengths to be quite the improvement.

Yeah. I get approximately £200 every two weeks. Last time I checked the national minimum wage for full time employment was somewhere around £200 for one week. I paid my rent, bills and food shopping and still managed to buy myself a PS4 in around a month's time. If someone is making about double the money I am, it's a good bet that they have more disposable income than I do. Having a mortgage is typically a lower cost per month than renting privately like I do as well. It's not as easy as saying 'not everyone can afford a new console'. The last gen lasted like 8 years if not more, and we're a year removed from the launch of this gen. It's a question of making the new consoles desireable or justifiable. And my opinion is that cross-gen games seriously get in the way of being able to do this. For casual gamers it is probably the single biggest stumbling block, rather than lack of DLNA and things like that which only affect hardcore gamers/media streamers.

I bought an iPhone 6+ instead of a PS4/Wii U. Other people went on vacation instead of buying a PS4, or bought a new car, or did repairs on their home, or countless other things.

OP - not sure if serious? People can buy what they want with their money. Also, I don't know what your situation is, but bragging about using your benefits to buy an expensive console and complaining about working people not doing the same doesn't sit well with me.

The pain is real, I am sat here as the sole PS4 owner amongst friends and family who flat out refuse to upgrade.

The main problem is cross-gen games getting released into the foreseeable future (2015 releases will still be on PS3/XB360). Certain people aren't going to plonk down money on a new console in order to play a better version of a game they want, they'll just get the game for their already-owned console. For them it's the difference between £50 on last gen and £350+£50 on the current gen, and price will always win. The only way to get those players to upgrade is to literally only put a game on current gen, so if they 'really' want it that much they will suddenly be able to justify getting a new console.

I realize that not everyone can afford a new console. But that argument QUICKLY loses all it's momentum when you realize that people who're in employment are on a lot more money that I am, and it only took me a month of saving a little out of three benefit payments (after paying rent, bills and food etc) in order for me to walk down to my local TESCOS and pick up a PS4 for £350, and a copy of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. The PS+ game(s) kept me stocked-up until I could afford to pick something else-up two weeks later, and so-on. Someone who is on a full time wage wouldn't have to save-up for a month in advance, or wait a further two weeks to get a second retail game etc. And the fact that now that time has gone-on the console isn't always £350, sometimes it's £330, or £320, or sometimes has a game bundled-in etc.

Note: Sorry is this isn't thread-worthy, didn't know where else to put it, and I wanted to see if anyone has any for/against discussion points regarding cross-gen games.

Get new friends. Yours are obviously going nowhere in life.

J/k

Seriously though, you'll make new gaming fronds and once your current friends feel like they are missing out enough they will buy on as well. Just be sure to tell them about how great of a time your having on the superior current gem version. Have them try it out on your system too so they can experience the difference.

OP, you need to take a step back and chill out. These systems aren't even a year old, their libraries not compelling enough or large enough, and are having a hard time convincing people to make the jump. Give it time. In the meantime, enjoy your super elite status or whatever.

Sad.

As has been already pointed out, this does indeed sound similar to the PC "elitist" attitude that is so often mentioned around these parts. "I don't care about those last gen peasants, fuck them" isn't a very reasonable thing to say.

Looking at the current-gen consoles from an outside perspective, IE someone with a PC or playing on last-gen. There aren't too many compelling reasons to pick up a current-gen console.

WiiU had a very strong 2014, but the PS4 and XBO won't be interesting until the end of 2015 at the earliest.

This is a good and bad thing though.

That was such a strange decision on Ubisoft's part.

Delay one of the releases, so you could maximize revenue. Release the 360/PS3/PC version, then 6 months later release the last-gen version under a different name, then port it up eventually.

Stupid argument.

Before this gen, game consoles couldn't run next-gen games just by bumping down the resolution, textures, and model quality. This is the first generation where the majority of the processing power and GPU updates are going more towards expanding how good the game looks versus how good the game runs.

This is the way forward.

All other previous gens, releasing a version of a game which would run on older hardware would have entailed basically rebuilding the game from scratch. It was done (rarely), because it wasn't worth the investment.

Now, it's a simple matter of managing graphics expectations. You can get the awesome version in 1080p with 4X AA and such for PS4, or the alright version in 720p without the bells and whistles for PS3.

You could not scale back Uncharted enough to run on the PS2. You could not scale back Dynasty Warriors 2 enough to run on the PS1. You could not scale back Crash Bandicoot enough to run on a SNES. You could not scale back Star Fox enough to run on a NES.

This is good. Even if they're gimped, more games for more people is always a good thing.

It's not stupid. I don't want developers to be limited when creating new games because they have to scale them some how to 10 year old hardware. Also wasting time making additional game assets that will look decent on consoles that have 1/4 of the ram my damn cell phone has and on radical and difficult hardware to program for vs easy to program for. I want developers to be able to make games that no amount of scaling would be possible to get even remotely the same game and they will never be free to do that until the idea of cross gen dies. I for one applaud CDPR and Rocksteady for making their new games current gen only. They are free to dream of new ideas that could never work on the older hardware because they are not hamstrung by the very idea of making a new game for the lowest common denominator. If you want to play new and relevant games buy new and relevant hardware, this past gen had more than it's time.

This has been my biggest takeaway from cross gen complaining. I just sit back and think "Welcome to the world of PC gamers...since around 2004." Except, for the most part, we just got over it and wait for sales on games that we know should be PC led instead.

I had to reread the OP like three times it's so bizarre. So you, an early adopter, are angry because the people you know don't see value in the new console, and want third-parties to prematurely shift development to next-gen only so that those people you know will be forced to upgrade to the new console that provides a lot less value, so that you'll have someone to play with?

Fucking LOL. Video Games.

I easily could afford a PS4. Nothing compelling for me on it yet.

It's know as the "Bourdain & Bloodborne Box" in our household. Glad it streams stuff real good!

What it sounds like you're really saying is "eff buying a next gen console until your friends are ready to upgrade", which sounds pretty reasonable if one of your main concerns in playing online with your friends.

This sums up my problem with this new gen: my friends and I mainly play Nintendo, so the Wii U's focus on couch co-op is all i need from next gen. My friends dont *have* to upgrade to be able to play with me.

In fact, even when we all had Xbox 360s or PS3s we didnt all have the same taste in games, which limited most multiplayer games to be online with strangers, since split-screen has been played down since the end of last gen, and most all of the current gen so far.

Even without worrying about a whole group, my girlfriend and I live together, and I cant justify dropping a sum of money on a console I'll mostly be playing alone, since we totally cant afford two setups with two copies of the game and two 15/mo accounts to be able to play Sunset Overdrive or GTA together.

If all the consoles focused on couch mp, my wallet would be very sad

Big whoop...

It's always like that. We too had plenty of cross-gen titles when the Xbox 360 launched... The first year of a console, cross-gen are bound to happen. For plenty of good and acceptable reasons, one of them obviously being that the new generation console market is too small compared to the old one to return a profit for big games.

That first year is turning to a close, and we have plenty of big next-gen exclusive third party games. Assassin Creed: Unity, Batman: Arkham Knight, The Crew, Final Fantasy 15, The Witcher 3, Evolve, ... The old gen will is dying. A nice and slow death, but I really see no reason whatsoever to speed up the process.

I am still playing on my PS3, I am sure plenty still do. There are even exclusives that still comes out - albeit we are seeing more and more PS4 port, a trend which definitely goes in the direction you want.

The fact of the matter is that for most people, these consoles simply haven't proven their worth. When my friends played Killzone, trumpeted by GAF as being so face-meltingly amazing looking that anybody who can't see the improvement from PS3 must be blind, stupid, or both, their reaction was a resounding 'meh, doesn't look much better than my PS3 games, the jump from PS2 to PS3 was way bigger'. These 'huge' differences just aren't huge to most people, and all the GIFs of Nate's face under the sun can't change that.

This is compounded by the fact that gamers' tastes, for the most part, are getting more expensive, meaning that major publishers need to spread AAA games to as many platforms as possible to recoup their costs.

Is it frustrating? Sure. I have to say that for the most part my PS4 feels like a wasted purchase. But having seen the generally underwhelmed reaction from my friends I completely understand it.

So nobody's gonna do it? Okay, I'll bite.

This post is not OK and you should be ashamed.

Why would he be ashamed of himself? I mostly agree with him/her. The OP gave no context as to why he/she is receiving Benefits. I live in the United States and I'm sick of about 90% of the people on Welfare. I grew up shit poor and saw first hand how most of these people play the system, it's fucking sickening. My wife is a nurse and she sees how these sick fucks would play the system. I've seen good people, honest people need and a apply for benefits for themselves and their kids and not only get denied but accused of trying to cheat the system! These are people with mentally handicap children too!
I have a genuine hatred for people who are able to work but are too lazy to do so, so they take advantage of the system. If the OP falls into this category then I agree with the person you quoted and I hope the OP gets shitted on, if he has legit reasons then I hope the OP learns that people who work sometimes has a harder time making it than people on benefits.

If you can't afford $400 every 8 years then you probably shouldn't be wasting time playing video games.

I'm with ya, OP. Lets move this shit forward.

The 360 and PS3 are still viable systems. I mean how long did they keep manufacturing the PS2 last gen? Loooong time if memory serves. The library for these systems is also extensive. Some of the best games ever made. Some reverse compatibility would aid in adoption of the newer hardware but that's never going to happen. So give it time. Eventually the developers and the install base will be right for a current gen only game.

This thread is dumb.

You bought a next gen console too early and your friends don't care enough to upgrade yet because pretty graphics aren't as important to them as other things. So now you blame cross gen games.

Not everyone is you OP. Me and many others wait until there's a good reason to upgrade, so far there is NO reason to own a PS4 or XB1 unless you want nicer graphics. They'll get there eventually, go enjoy your games.

This is one dumb fucking thread. Your financial assumptions are ignorant and if cross-gen sells games to more people, then leave it be. Let them enjoy their games and save their money.
