The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

well what kind of cpu do you have? Per core Cpu Perf is far more important in this game as it doesnt appear to load balance correctly.

Well it's a first gen i7. But it's an i7 950.
I doubt that would cause much of a difference in performance seeing how it hasn't really bottlenecked anything for me till date.

The i5 3500k is quicker but not by much, and at the same time my GPU is quite a bit faster than his 280x.

Yep, that tells me there are players running around with their lantern on 90% of the time....why?
Cus it's pretty :3

Also glad to hear that Bethesda plans on optimizing it, I love the game but if I was playing on consoles I'd have traded it in ages ago.

A shame the PC Metacritic is permanently lower because of technical issues.

As someone who upgraded from a first gen i7 920 and to a 4770K, the difference was significant. There's something people miss when they're just looking at benchmarks, and for me, everything became much more consistent, higher minimum framerates, smoother framerates in general - I didn't expect the difference to be significant at all, because on the face of it, it doesn't look like it would be, but it really was.

I'm running home to install my shiny new 970 right now. I was planning on grabbing this as my game to break it in with, but it sounds like I should wait for a couple of patches anyway.

Running the 60 fps unlock, seems like the aiming/running animations seem to still run at 30 if that makes sense? IDK what it is but it's not 60, despite the in-game counter saying it is.

But the difference between an i7 950 vs 3500k is not wide enough to get the performance he claimed, especially considering he has a slower GPU compared to mine.

Yeah it isn't, your 950 is probably OC as well, and so is mine (4.4 Ghz)
But anyway, iDTech 5 is very CPU dependent, but it's probably my readings.

I'll try to get some this Friday with screenshots.

Id Tech 5 typically scales very well across multiple CPU cores but the conversion from OpenGL to D3D seems to have killed that entirely for Evil Within.

With framerate unlocked at 640x480, CPU utilization stays pretty much fixed at 50% on my 2500k. That means it's only using two cores out of the four.

Has this game crashed on anyone? I've spent about 6 hrs on the game so far, and yesterday, I got my first crash.
When I played at default (locked 30fps) with max settings, I didn't crash.

It was very stable throughout the whole game even during the most graphically intensive moments.

I'm looking forward to the update. I'll play it through again with NG+ once it's updated!

anyone figure out a way to enable true fullscreen mode? Just started playing and I'm getting mad tearing. I can't use my gsync or any external vsync.

This is one of the worst ports/performing modern pc game in awhile

This game for me runs 60 fps 99.9 % of the time r9 290x vapour x what a beast! this card is.
My settings

R_swapinterval -0 unlocked frame rate, (60 fps lock in game caused big fps drops).
vsync through driver
hyper threading off
aa through driver
ssd evo maximum performance

Installing this game to my SSD doubled my framerate.

Interesting that an SSD actually gives performance improvements. That rarely happens.

Are there any good comparison shots showing the difference between r skip glare on and off?

Whoa.

This is really frustrating. I have 3 monitors, the 2nd one being the primary. It was working fine in fullscreen mode on the primary monitor, but after trying flawless widescreen the game just refuses to go fullscreen if not on the 1st monitor. And when I turn of FW, it only runs fullscreen on the 3rd monitor. Can someone help me?

is "skip glare" a console command? does enabling the console disable achievements?

I tried changing the skip glare to 0 that was already in the config file but it didn't work. I have to do it in console. EDIT: Wait, I think it's working through the config file. I had it at the wrong value.

I do believe enabling console disable achievements. My config wouldn't save the 60fps command so I had to enable it in game eveytime. No achievements. When I delete the +com_enableconsole 1 from the launch option and load the game I got like 8 achievements instantly.

So far I'm liking the new glare option. It's not just the colors it adjust but it gets rid of the blurry distant smear on the village level. The background becomes very clear.

You can save your settings in your autoexec.cfg (Check the OP) and still get achievements.
Just forget about the console after the initial testing, unless you want to keep changing settings at will

Patch out for the Steam version:

With this update, players with high-end PCs will be able to go in to their settings and toggle between running the game with a 30 FPS cap or a 60 FPS cap. Additionally, players will be able to disable the letterbox "black bars" in the game settings -- allowing you to maximize your screen's real estate.

Update Notes
Frame lock settings added
In settings, you can now toggle between a 30 FPS and 60 FPS cap.
Letterbox setting
UI toggle to disable the letterbox bars
Fixes gameplay issues when running at >30 FPS
Fixes for visual issues associated with removing letterbox framing
Achievements now work when console is enabled
Fix for game starting in windowed mode on first run
Minor localization fixes

not really seeing any optimization with the newly patched in 60fps option. still getting around 45-50fps at the start of that early chapter with the dock and canoe. only played for a minute though.

770 4gb
i7 3770

will still run 30fps locked if i end up buying DLC.

A good step in the right direction but the performance is still dreadful. Also...weirdly if you force AFR2, it will use 70-80% of both GPUs but still get about the same performance.

It's pathetic, they enabled 60 fps, but locked with v-sync. What it means is that even though I activate the 60 fps mode it still runs at around 30-35 fps with my GTX 770 because of v-sync.

And it's still impossible to start it in fullscreen, so impossible to use g-sync.

Come on, how hard is it to patch the game to run fullscreen without v-sync and locked at 60 fps max? That's ALL I'm asking for. If there's a videogame god out there please hear me.

Yea, didn't they say it starts in fullscreen now??? The game is still booting in Borderless for me....

Yeah, 60fps has not been optimized, just easier to enable. Boo

Hmm that is disappointing. Hopefully there's another patch that addresses this.

So there is the 30 fps cap (r_swapinterval -2) or 60 fps/vsync (-1) option in -game now, but no 60 uncapped (0) anymore?
Did I get that right?

Does forcing the 0 option via config file not work anymore? That seemed to run better than the vsynced option.

Just tried it with the new patch and I'm hovering around 35-40fps in Chapter 2. Pretty disappointed, I feel like I shouldn't be having issues with it.

i5 2500k OC'd @ 4.0GHz
GTX 980
8GB RAM

What is wrong with this game? Reporting 60fps, 16,6ms frametimes, 70% on my GPU and around 50% on my CPUs and it looks and feels like a sub 30fps game...patched Demo version here. What the hell? That is creepy for sure.

what resolution? at 2560x1440 and below, i can get a solid 60fps.

i5 2500k at stock speed
970
16 GB ram

Hard to believe, tbh. I have the same setup, my 970 is almost at 980, my i5 runs at 4.2 and I can't get solid 60FPS on 1080p.

Anyway, game is utter shit. 60FPS feels like The Last of Us on PS3. Constant motion judder and lag is through the roof.

Look at dem frametimes:

It's a horrible experience, but for all the wrong reasons. Completly unenjoyable as a game, feels like like work playing it. Glad they released the demo. Will never buy, if they do not patch these through the roof and back till it's completly smooth. Graphics are ok, but not THAT great.

I'm about to try out the demo. What can I expect here?

My Specs:
i5-4670k @3.4GHz
8GB RAM
GTX 760 2GB

Intended Settings:
60fps cap
Black bars on
1080p
Lowest possible AA

What other settings am I gonna have to turn down? Like, what texture setting is fine for a 2GB card?

Black bars on at 1080p should run quite well. Not 60, but still smoothly. It won't eat up 2GB of VRAM, either, even with max settings.

I can't reach 60fps with an EVGA GTX 480 SC but I'm holding 30fps without the black bars and all graphic options enabled @ 1080p, which makes me happy. (i7 920 @ 3.6ghz / 12GB / Win 7).

Gtx 660
i7 3770 3.4
16gb ram
1200p max settings with black bars

Game runs great overall, indoors is 40-50 fps outdoors is 30-40 fps, the only exception is if i have the lamp active near a fire or lots of grass it'll drag it down to 28fps if the lamp isnt active it stays above 30 bit of a strange issue but its not too annoying.
