343: Halo 5 beta runs at 720p/60FPS, focused on gameplay, not final resolution

Good

Framerate over resolution should be the focus for the multiplayer. Get everything nailed down, then optimize.

(I'd be fine with 30fps in single player though ;) )

This generation is so graphically stillborn, it's pathetic.

Graphics have been incredible in some games.

Are you talking about framerate or resolution maybe? That's a different subject from graphics.

Lol. Why the need to throw Bungie under the bus? Plenty of developers are going with 30fps.

I love 60fps as much as the next guy, but this is a bit ridiculous.

1080p and 60fps are bother important, to varying degrees depending on be game.

Ideally Halo SP should be 1080p 30fps on XBO, with multi being 60fps. IMO. In another world where the XBO was more powerful, then sure, go for 60/1080, but since it isn't, I worry that H5 fidelity will underwhelm at 1080p/60.

Really hope I am pleasantly surprised. We are a year out after all.

I threw Bungie under the bus because they were the previous developers of Halo, and kept games at 30 FPS. One thing I will say is that there games were almost always locked at 30 FPS. Halo 4 had a shitty frame-rate.

Ideally, yes, 1080p & 60 fps would be nice. No one is arguing we don't want 1080p. We do. But if it cannot be done, I would gladly take 60 fps over 1080p. You wouldn't?

Do people here choose 480 60 over 1080 30 ?

More like 480 60 and 1080 10. Which would you choose?

Don't make dumb non-equivalent comparisons. You're asking people whether they'd take 1/8 res for twice the framerate when the reality is 1/2 res.

Halo 3 was not even 720p on Xbox 360 so everybody should relax when they think back and consider how much they liked that game.

Plus, 60fps is good. I'm betting the full game is gonna have 1360x1080p or maybe 1280x900p or something.

I was actually thinking back to this; Yeah, Halo 3 was 640p only, but 640p with DX9/10 level shaders and high FP precision HDR was a huge leap over 480i with DX8 level shaders and lighting. 720p with DX11 and some tessalation is hardly a jump from 640p with DX9.. You see the problem, I hope.

Eh people still complained a ton about how Halo 3 looked back then.

Anyway, this is a beta over a year out from release. If the final release of the game ends up at 792p then you should probably be concerned, but not right now.

For some reason I was expecting to be blown away with the graphics in Halo 5 (maybe because Halo 4 looked so good) but this beta has been so disappointing in that regard. Arena 4v4, small maps, no destructibility and this is all they could do? Even for a beta, I think it's very underwhelming.

If this game doesnt hit 1080p I wont touch it. Im skipping the beta because I dont do 720p in 2014.

...gamers these days man. Wow.

60 fps is the only number that matters for multiplayer.

If their aiming higher for the final product it's no big deal, is it? We already know the Xone can do better at 60fps (Killer Instinct Season 2, COD: AW).

perfectly acceptable. its a year out . And a legit beta not a glorified demo. Assuming it'll be 900p or 900p+dynamic resolution on launch. (could be 1080p but I doubt it given 60fps and that they'll push for greater graphical fidelity)

60 fps mandate for Halo multiplayer is an interesting change of pace. Should make for an amazingly smooth online experience compared to say, Reach.

They'll probably drop the SP down to a locked 30 to push out more effects and units.

Did they say if the full game would have larger maps with 8v8? I can't imagine a halo game without some form of bloodgulch.

720p in 2015 shouldn't even be legal.

60fps is great though.

That won't be the final resolution.

"So, for the beta, we're going to be coming out at 720p and 60fps. That's not the final resolution for the game. You can imagine as we go through the remainder of the project we'll be focused on polishing the visual look of the game. You can expect it will look amazing when it comes out."

Although it could mean 792p like TitanFall. I keed I keed.

Awesome to see them aiming for 60FPS. I'm sure final Res won't be 720p but closer to 900p or maybe what COD:AW has.

But that 60FPS target is great. More devs should be aiming for 60 fps

You're probably dead right with the AW guess. They've shown it can keep a pretty closer to 60 fps at that resolution and they can still plaster on the box 1080 and people that don't know better will believe them.

You sure it has nothing to do with the fact that it scales better? They've been putting 1080p on the box since 360, so I'm pretty sure if they go with AW res is because it works better.

Well that's an advantage of course, but if they wanted better scaling they could go with the titanfall res and be fine. With the aw res they get the benefit of possibly the dynamic scaling plus the fact they can say 1080 and being able to say "hey we can match or competitor on this bullet point on our top game" for the people that don't know any better.

Persons who think this is going to suddenly jump from 720p 60fps to 900p 60fps over a year are fooling themselves, something has to give. Since Halo5 is going to be a new game on new hardware, they will try to push more effects, use more advanced graphical features and that will task the hardware. People should really turn off the blinders, Halo 2 anniversary runs at a lower resolution than even 900p and that's basically a remaster of an old game, yet, it still dips quite a bit from 60fps in the campaign.

I just want them to enhance the graphics because that is so underwhelming. Looks like Halo 4.

Reserves judgment for the finished product.

720p one year from launch in a first party game with fps arenas and mediocre graphics?

Are they having problems with development? It's very worrying, this is not a launch title.
If the multiplayer runs this way I wonder what's the state of the single campaign.
