I should also add for people who don't know, once you beat Chapter 7, that's when the story gets really good, you start getting 2 battles per chapter, skirmishes in those news report things, so yeah. It's definitely worth the frustration. (Though this wasn't frustrating for me this time, which is hilarious because I put the game down years ago because of Chapter 7. xD)

As someone dislikes very "anime" animes (as in useless boobies, horrible humor, fan service). This has none of it. Instead it just has fantastic art, a cool story, freaking fantastic gameplay and is cheap to boot.

I can only recommend it.

The actual anime of the game, in another hand... poor Alicia, made tsundere to laughable levels.

I'm pretty sure you can cheese your way through mission 7, but it takes tons of time and is still pretty terrifying. If you spread your units out a lot and spend as much time as possible running away in awkward directions it works better and you can finish with no losses, it just takes like 2 hours or more. It's definitely the worst mission by far, though.

As for losing Marina, I would definitely just keep on trucking through, you will definitely have a better time, and it's not like the game will be that much harder without her.

Chap 7 is not that hard actually.
Selvaria is nuisance, but she can be silenced by pinning her against wall with edelweiss. After I got her into that position, she basically just shooting futilely to edelweiss. I didn't know you can lob grenade to the generator, I just use lancers and engineer to beat butomy into scraps. And know where to shoot the ruins at is also crucial

On the ps3, I completely did every mission +DLC and NG+ so I did a no-leveling/no upgrading run and got as far as mission 9.

I was disappointed though because there was no way to win that map without upgrading your troops to do more damage, given how that particular mission is.

First time I play this, but going by what I read in this thread I think I got lucky with my first draw:

Also Nadine, saw her mentioned too but didn't screencap. (Actually all my picks were based on traits and if I liked the characters, but these were among them. :p)

No crashes at this part, thankfully (1080p, big picture mode).

The RNG gods seem also to benefit me for once. Got all of those minus Marina in my first draw, then got Marina when they give you new ones for the first time. The funny thing is that before I knew they were the better people to have in a team, I already selected them because I found their face designs the better of the bunch.

Couple of questions.

I should bother for A ranks my first time through right? I'm not sure what it measures but it seems impossible most of the time.

The guy in cemetery who offers orders, are those tied to your position in the story? I hope I didn't miss some.

just out of curiosity what exactly is new R&D upgrades unlocking based on?

is it pure story position or is unit level a factor too?

I wouldn't bother trying for A rank the first time through. It is a nice challenge but not necessary for progression.

I believe he offers new ones as the story progresses but you can't miss any.

Story progression I believe.

Mission 7 spoilers:

I just made a team of lancers, 2 engineers, Marina and Rosie, cleaned up the map, sent back Marina and Rosie, shot all the turrets from the big tank with the Edelweiss and the lancers, then shot the ruins to make the big tank use the main gun, got an engineer up the tank ladder, blew up a vent, repeat. When Seldaria arrived I just kept getting my soldiers out of her range (ruined buildings are great as cover) and kept pounding at the big tank. Got through the mission with no losses and an A. As long as you take the time to destroy the tank's machinegun turrets (and mop up all the footsoldiers before Seldaria appears) you shouldn't have any issues clearing the mission.

If that's the display resolution of your monitor, that's as high as it will go. Normally.

You'll need GeDoSaTo if you want to downsample.

ah i see, everyone was talking about how you could set the resolution to whatever you wanted so i didn't think it was tied to the monitor.

Valkyria just took the top revenue spot on Steam again.

You don't need Gedosato if you have an Nvidia card, just makes the whole process easier.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person that feels that mission 7 isn't hard at all once you understand how it's played. All you need is Welkin and the CP officers, 1 lancer and maybe 1 engineer. What's the main enemy force comes out just retreat everyone except for Welkin.

Also you people should be ashamed. Mid level saving is practically cheating.

I am manly man. As with all games in this genre, I refuse to ever mid-level save.

People think Chapter 7 is hard?

Sure, it once made me ragequit the game until the horrors of Halo 4 made me abandon ship on the FPS genre, but now I understand the level well enough to know the exact timings and movements necessary to A-rank it with no sweat.

Also, honestly - I don't think outselling CoD and ACU is really a hard feat right now. CoD's sales were more than likely frontloaded, and all the bad news around ACU's port probably scared off most people.

The port is eventually going to outsell the PS3 version overall by March at this rate.

Doesn't change the fact that they're still AAA Ubisoft and Activision games. They've got clout no matter the platform and Valkyria Chronicles is LITERALLY selling 3 units for every single one they sell. That is no small feat for a six year old JRPG port.

would appreciate this. If you can't be stuffed making a tool just tell me explicitly how to get those PS3 icons and I'll do it myself :)

Hmm yeah, all of the interface stuff in the texture_replace folder has dualshock icons, wish they'd let people use them.

I've played a bit with my Playstation button prompt mod, and I think it's working fine.

If people are willing to give this a go, here's the download: http://www.tzarsectus.com/tools/VCPS3buttons.rar

Extract the program to where the game is installed (same directory as Valkyria.exe), and run it. It'll modify Valkyria.exe, and also create a backup of it should you wish to revert changes. If game gets a new patch, you'll need to run my tool again (and it'll most likely be compatible with future versions of the game).

There's two minor downsides to the program:
- It won't reflect button mapping changes.
- Save/load menu still shows 360 button icons.

If anyone uses the tool and runs into any problems, let me know.

And if anyone's afraid my tool will scan your harddrive and steal any Jann x Largo fan fiction, here's the source code to ease your worries: http://www.tzarsectus.com/tools/source/VCPS3buttons.rar (the tool is very simple, it just scans for and replaces a bunch of texture ID numbers)

I had a lot of trouble with Chapter 7 back when I played it on PS3, but beat it this time on the first try.

As a general rule, you can hide at least four units behind the Edelweiss, and even more along the side. It's a great way to create movable cover. And if you have an engineer handy, you never need worry about taking too much damage from enemy tanks and lancers since engineers can heal it so quickly. So long as the tank's rear is facing away from enemies, there's really nothing to worry about.

Yeah, it suits the WWII infantry+tank tactics the game is based on.

I was stuck on Vash'j for 2 brutal months. It can be done. I will prepare. I will succeed.

Meanwhile, it's happened again.

It's just sand in my eye, I swear.

All dat JRPG Goodness topping sales charts. A fair bit better than the superstitious, backwards days this game originally launched in, huh?

Only problem seems to be is that it's reading the Japanese instruction set for the game so X and O are switched but other than that it's just fine! I suppose remapping things in the config would fix this well enough to be 100% accurate.

I don't remember having any trouble with chapter 7, but chapter 9 was so incredibly frustrating. So many attempts.

I'm up to chapter 4 and the game is pretty fun but man there is a loooot of story here and it's all so plain and uninteresting. I kind of assumed it would be a little cooky like a persona but they're playing it straight and plain so far. Does it get better/funnier later on?

Not really. It's a pretty straight forward story that explores the horrors of war later on.

Hope that if Sega ports VC2 and VC3 to steam they rename the games to "Valkyria Chronicles Gaiden" and "Valkyria Chronicles 2", its better this way...

Having fun with the game, but yeah the scout class is broken.

It gets better, but it doesn't get any funnier, quite the opposite actually. (With a few exceptions)

Which screens show X and O button prompts? I could try editing those textures directly.

It's possible to complete every mission with no upgrades or leveling, including mission 9.

The battle voiceover isn't subtitled in any way, and this is how a lot of the minor characters get characterized at all.

Huh, so those voice clips aren't just the main characters? I really hope there will be a future patch or mod that adds subtitles for the combat banter then. I wouldn't even mind if I get a soldier killed due to reading the subtitles.

Chapter 7 wasn't so bad for me-
Selvaria didn't even attack us, she just hung out there with her reinforcements and didn't bother moving out. This is probably chiefly because by the time I took out radiator 3 all of the side cannons were down and I had banked so many medals (since I didn't have to use them all on the turns where I was just waiting for the tank to take a shot) that I could just have Welkin keep shooting it until it died on the very turn it became vulnerable.

any clue why GeDoSaTo would be taking screenshots at 1920x1080?

Im also not getting the startup message for gedo like I do on FFXIII so im not sure if its actually rendering at a higher resolution

The weirdest thing is though, sometimes I take screenshots and they are 1920x1800 with the extra at the bottom just black.

Well the two that are immediately noticeable for now since it doesn't show those prompts a lot:
