Far Cry 4 PC performance thread

What's this about a patch enabling fur effects in a patch?, the fur option in game for me clearly adds and removes fur - is it a patch to improve how it looks?.

This is what I am trying to figure out as well, some users a few pages back stated that nvidia fur will be added in a post launch patch.... not sure what to make of that. Maybe a different fur option for AMD users?

thats the console quality fur. theres a pc version using nvidia gameworks coming in the future. it works on nvidia and amd gpus. txaa is the only nvidia exclusive effect in the game.

Possibly. At the moment, the Fur setting is an On/Off toggle. It's possible you'll get a NVIDIA option after the game is patched for Hairworks.

I know the Hairworks implementation uses isoline tessellation, which does not perform well on GCN GPUs. Perhaps Ubisoft implemented an alternative setting so AMD owners could enjoy some super furry animals without too much of a performance hit?

Just tried playing. Getting the black screen crash. Weird bug. I uninstalled everything, stopped all relevant tasks, exited all necessary programs, still nothing.

Unplugged all USB devices, too.

Aha! That makes more sense, I didn't realize that hairworks was a separate graphics option that differs from fur. So confusing lol. I would assume nVidia Fur = nVidia Hairworks , and for now we have an option for fur on and off that both nvidia users and amd users can use.

Observations:

- very latest Nvidia drivers do nothing to the stuttering
- the stuttering seems at least related to NPCs being spawned. I left the game running on its own for a while and then noticed that every time there was a significant stutter, then a car would appear suddenly after. I thought it was a coincidence but it happened regularly.

Stutter -> a car appears.

Very easy to test: just leave completely the controller while you are near a road and you'll notice that stutters come just before a car appears.

wait... so if you turn Fur off right now, it's even worse looking than consoles??

NVIDIA HairWorks/NVIDIA Fur/Simulated/However it is referred to in the game will work on all GPUs as it is essentially DX11 tessellation.

Try playing with UPlay in Offline mode.

I wonder if it's the highly fluctuating framerate that's causing the stuttering for me. When I check msi afterburner's hw monitor, the framerate very rarely seems to dip under 45 and usually hovers around 50 to 70. I wonder if dropping the monitor and game's refreshing to 60hz would lessen it a bit.

Hopefully the drivers improve the performance.

Well yeah, I guess that FOV Slider is broken. But apart from that it runs fine so far on my 4570/970 :)

I had the same problem here but it hasn't happened again so I assume the fov slider works fine, it was just that scene that didn't

Yeah baby! This game is simply stunning visually! The new AMD drivers have helped as well....

Running Intel i7 3770k@4.8ghz
Sapphire 7970Ghz Edition@1200mhz Core/1650 memory
16gb DDR3

Runs maxed out besides using x2 AA @ 1080p/60fps

Now that makes me hopeful for my non-Ghz 7970 and my i5 3570k @ 4.0ghz even if I don't have the game yet! :D Though would you know how much the GPUs memory clock would really add to the performance? I can hit 1150mhz quite easily on the core clock but I don't think my card will manage 1650mhz memory :(

Gonna try the new Cat drivers tonight and see if it gives me a decent fps boost.

If not, does anyone have a solid way of locking the fps to 30? I tried using RadeonPro to limit the fps to 31 and then enabled Vsync in game but it felt horrible. Not 30fps horrible but worse. This was on default High settings. Without the fps lock and using triple buffering in game it didn't feel to bad but the drops when running/driving were a little jarring.

My setup...(on a 1080p HDTV)

i5-3570 (Stock...non-K)
8GB DDR3
7870XT @ 1150MHz 2GB
W7 64bit

Hmm try the integrated framelock of MSI Afterburner, I don't have FC4 yet but it generally works best for me, I hope it helps.

Meaning since i don't have FC4, i shouldn't install them? Like, they won't improve anything else?

Since they just released a driver last Tuesday, I'm not sure how many other general improvements were made.......... but I always download new drivers (once I see there are no glaring issues reported by other gaffers)

There are no official release notes yet (or I can't find them). People have found the binary on NVIDIA's web servers and posted the link.
This is all I can find from Guru3D:

You can now download the Nvidia GeForce 344.75 WHQL driver. This GeForce Game Ready driver, release 344.75 WHQL, provides support for Maxwell’s new Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing (MFAA) mode. In addition, this Game Ready WHQL driver ensures you'll have the best experience for Far Cry 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Crew, and World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor.

They always improve other stuff. Do you have DA:I or WoW? Or other games? Likely they'll do something for you, and if you have a 900 Series there's something new for you to play with.

How's the SLI profile bros?

I have SLI GTX 780s and can't test until I get home.

Run at 90%+ on my SLI 980 system, but you might need the Day 1 patch: http://steamcommunity.com/games/298110/announcements/detail/172588989236852911

I'm getting a serious case of crushed blacks with the new drivers:

I'm also seeing a weird image retention-like issue when moving the camera, but if memory serves it's because temporal SMAA doesn't play nicely with SLI (Watch Dogs behaves the same but at least regular SMAA is an in-game option).

2x 2GB 670s, for what it's worth.

Ah! So that's what was causing that in Watch Dogs. Fack.

So after I installed the driver the game is stable at 60 FPS with everything maxed out (Ultra), except for AA shich is at SMAA.

Other settings are enabled and Goodrays is at enhanced (don't know what this). Triple Buffering is disabled, VSYNC is normal and FOV is maxed out.

So, whoever optimized the game so far have done good job.

If I however activate AA to TXAA4 it gives me 40-60 FPS.

The stutter I was getting earlier I think was Textures on High. It would be running the same as current settings, then bomb into the 30's and back again so probably running out of vram. But everything said, game looks amazing and is playing really nicely.
Similar experience with my 670. The only graphical faults ive had are the into cinematic running poorly (lots of tearing) and while driving I get hitching, which I assume is buffering. Other than that, the game is playing very well with setting higher than yours.

I'm having the exact same issues with 2x 2GB 670s =\

The game appears to jump between full-screen and windowed when it is launching, not sure if that is causing some issues.

Highlights of AMD Catalyst™ 14.11.2 Windows® Beta Driver Performance Improvements

Dragon Age: Inquisition performance optimizations
- Up to 5% performance increase over Catalyst™ 14.11.1 beta in single GPU scenarios with Anti-Aliasing enabled.
- Optimized AMD CrossFire™ profile
Far Cry 4 performance optimizations
- Up to 50% performance increase over Catalyst™ 14.11.1 beta in single GPU scenarios with Anti-Aliasing enabled.

Important Notes
◾The AMD CrossFire™ profile for Far Cry 4 is currently disabled in this driver while AMD works with Ubisoft to investigate an issue where AMD CrossFire™ configurations are not performing as intended. An update is expected on this issue in the near future through an updated game patch or an AMD driver posting.

Ah yeah, so I'm not alone with this. Pity for ShadowPlay.

Ooooh

So yeah, after 90min of gameplay the game now got stuck with a blackscreen and sound-only and after I restarted it it crashed with stopped working-error when loading the save... will give it a shot later today, quite positive so far tho.

Btw, can we backup our uPlay saves manually? Don't trust them and disabled their cloud service anyway.

Why is it the moment i switched to nvidia amd suddenly steps up their driver game?

Feels good man.
