Konami bringing Suikoden 1 & 2 PSone to PSN and VITA. #isthisreallife #basedkonami

Every RPG fan... MUST play Suikoden II.

Period.

Couldn't agree more. it really is that good. If we could get a fraction of the people who bought FFVII on PSN to pick up this one as well, Konami would make suiko 6 in a heartbeat.

But I'd take a "Suikoden 1/2 HD remix" as a consolation prize.

This isn't the typical small band of heroes that save the world from a evil big bad type of game.

The Suikoden series is mainly about you being a commander of an army to rebel against an invading Kingdom, which requires you to find recruits to act as soldiers and military commanders, as well run various facilities for your headquarters.

Just wanted to comment on one last thing, since you mentioned being an army commander- suikoden 2 is one of the few JRPGs of its era that actually HAS permadeath for party characters. Screwing up the major army skirmishes badly enough can mean that some characters are "killed" for good- kind of a shock the first time I saw that. It's not common (I've only seen it once, personally) but it is one of those little things that really sets the game apart.

Never played a Suikoden in my life but in a jRPG fan and I've heard nothing but good things about S2 that in seriously considering it. I've heard it's basically "Game of Thrones the JRPG"!

Would you guys say this is true?

Just get Suikoden I. If you like it, you'll love Suikoden II.

It can happen in Suikoden 1 as well.

When you have Pahn fight Teo in the one on one duel. Fucking up the duel and Pahn dies permanently, which by consequence screws up your chances to revive Gremio towards the end of the game.
Also doing something really dumb in the rock paper scissors war battles. Such as using Magic against Archers. Not only will the attack fail spectacularly but one of the three characters you picked for that attack attempt have high chances to get killed off for good.

Ironically I did this on purpose in one of my games just to see what would happen and
Luc died in S1, which would be a Time Paradox due to him being the major big bad in Suikoden III
I was amused at this because this was like my 3 or 4th replay of S1 at the time. Of course once you get Ninja recruits like Kage, Kasumi, and Hanzo, War battles become pretty much effortless with the read the enemy mind strategy and you can just sleep walk through everything.

Thankfully SII war battles require much more strategy and it's akin to something like Warsong / Langrisser / Growlanser.

I like the game, but this is nonsense. The storyline at it's height doesn't come within a mile of ASOIAF at it's worst.

That being said it's very good for a jrpg. it's charming, thought provoking in parts, and avoids the vast majority of the shitty genre cliches that plagued the industry at that time (and still do, to a large extent).

As someone else said, this is NOT "six plucky teens save the world" despite the fact that your protagonist is a preteen (or around there). You quickly discover things are a lot more complex, there are no easy answers, and there's no chosen one to ride in with a magic sword to fix things.

I've always heard great things about Suikoden II. Now I never played any of the games in the series, do I have to play the first in order to play the second?

Suikoden 6 is never gonna happen. Never. If hell freezes over and Konami by chance does make one, it'll be closer to breath of fire 6, than what you would like it to be.

Suikoden VI has as much chance as Shenmune 3, Crash coming back to PlayStation, or TLG actually being finished.

Konami is basically a 2.5 series company now.

Hey Daoster, I'm surprised to see you on NeoGAF. Good to see you here. It's been awhile.

20 hrs is my kind of length for a jrpg post college.

do they hold up though? Do I need a guide or is it generally good with pushing people to the next thing. Any grind? Whats the difficulty? Translation decent enough to understand? Hows the pace of combat? ps1 jrpg battles love to take their time.

talking about both suikoden 1 and 2.

I'm excited to play this again. I never beat it. A random hint that I might offer: the very first optional recruit is in the first war battle. Just as a warning to those who want everyone.

I found out what the normal ending of the game was accidentally and it made me really upset knowing what would happen. It's bullshit that the first recruit is hard to get as it is.

Combat is fast paced for a turn based rpg. EXP is good because it scales with each individual so a regular encounter can be huge xp for someone that is way below your level so they will catch up quick.

To mainline the game, you don't need a guide. The objectives are laid out well and you won't get lost in town or world map because the layouts are simple and sectioned off in ways so that you will get funneled to the right place. You will need a guide if you want all 108 members as some have obtuse requirements

Translation is fine. 2 was rushed so there are some npcs that speak gibberish but this is inconsequential.

You can play 2 standalone, but playing 1 will give you better perspective and appreciation for the returning characters that go into 2.

Suikoden 1 and 2 combat is very quick, attacks come out fast. A character runs up to the enemy swings their weapon and goes back to their standing spot if they are melee, If they are long range they will fire their gun, shoot and arrow, etc. Most attacks execute like a half a second.

The longest thing in combat is spell animations but even those are pretty quick.

Grinding is completely unnecessary, in fact experience is scaled in such a way the lower the party member the more exp is gained against stronger monsters.

A character always needs 1000 exp to get to the next level.

So a level 1 character fighting a level 5 monster will jump 2 to 3 levels instantly at the end of battle.

An even more extreme example, is that you can withhold most characters from entering combat until the end of the game and pick a select elite team to handle mostly everything. At the end of the game take your Leader and a few level 1s into the last area of the game with level 50 to 60 enemies and use the Main characters all-target death spell, and the group of level 1s will basically jump to level 40 to 50 in a single fight.

Here is a video showcasing how quick combat plays out in terms of animations.

Super excited to play this game since I missed it on my ps1 days, but after replaying FFIX I couldn't get over how dated random encounters feel. It really diminished my experience and I didn't enjoy the game nearly as much as I did in the past. Does Suikoden II have random encounters?

Check the videos I posted above.

They aren't nearly as unbearably slow like FF9 is.

Yes, but they are super fast and you have an auto battle option.

Once you recruit Kai it's pretty much game over for most random enemies for the rest of the game. His unite attack with the Hero pretty much destroys everything that isn't a boss.

Hi all,

This is Yuichi.. host to most of Konami Twitch streams

I want to thank the hardworking guys at Sony and Konami (such as our very own ToraShir0) to help with the push to release this classic to PSN and VITA.

Also, thank you to the followers and fans of our twitch stream..
Your support really did help show that this would be worth the effort.

If you are new to Suikoden, please give it a shot.
Suikoden II is a direct sequel to Suikoden I and, as far as I know, the saves can transfer from 1 to 2.

Thanks again.

Hey Yuichi! Welcome!

Thank you for all your work getting this release!

I've never read any books from the A Song of Fire and Ice series.

But I'm putting this spoiler tags, it's not exactly spoilers just a basic summary.

Suikoden 1 in a nutshell. You are the son of a General in the Imperial army. Your father is going north to deal with a border skirmish with a neighboring country, while he is a away you start working as a recruit for the Imperial Army doing some menial tasks.

One of the missions you get into some trouble and your buddy uses forbidden magic to kill an unkillable monster, one of your Military superiors is suspicious of this and reports this to the Queen. The Queen summons your friend for an audience. He has a magical bracelet that lets him use forbidden magic, the same bracelet the Queen has been looking for a long time, friend escapes.

The next day your house is completely surrounded by Imperial troops looking for your buddy. As a gambit to flee your friend begs you to take the bracelet and use him as bait so you can get away without issue. The plan works and you head south, however the Queen now labels you as a fugitive on the run injuring several imperial soldiers and a traitor to the army, which is totally BS and lies. She just wants the magical bracelet of ultimate power by any means necessary.

You get mixed up with some Rebels that are anti-Imperial regime and get stuff doing some tasks for them and begin to find out the Imperial Army you work for may be corrupt to the core leading all the way to highest chain of command.

You decide to join the Rebels and start building a military force, establish a base and basically become a capable force that is able to stand against the Imperial Army. There is a bunch of other stuff but I don't want to start naming characters, so I'm trying to be as vague as possible.

Suikoden 2 takes place 3 years after the events of the first game in a neighboring territory dealing with a similar premise of you being a military recruit that is setup and becoming a fugitive on the run, finding people to help you, building an army, and ultimately stopping an invading kingdom for being a bunch of jerkwads for being mean and invading.

I hope this makes sense if that is anything like Game of Thrones to you.

Not sure about the GoT similarity but I appreciate the S1 summary. I plan to play S2 and since Im skipping S1 I think this should help.

The first game is pretty short, if you can play it before S2, I'd highly recommend it.

Will this release fix the bugs with missing annalee songs and warbattle music? Matlida Glitch, and jibberish text encountered sometimes. (tips, mob names).

Seriously guys, I can't stress enough how fucking great the first three games are. V is OK, too, IV is garbage.

III specially holds a special place in my heart, the characters and story clicked with me.

One of the best things of the games is that you are playing in a small area of a huge world, you fight against some country knowing that there are countless others and knowing that even if you are gambling with yours and the life of thousands of people you are still just a small drop in a pond.

It's hard to put in words, but no other series has (had :( ) this sense of world building so nailed.

Oh, and even though you are fighting small border skirmishes in the big scope of things, you don't get the sensation that this is a meaningless game or the first episode of a series (like FFXIII, for example, where you just feel ripped off when completing those games because you know the devs intended to do more things and cut things on purpose).

Aaaaagh I want to go to Harmonia, damn it, I miss this series so fucking much.

Hmm I think I'm going to make a US PSN account for PS1 classics.

That way I get 60hz along with these and other missing games (Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Dino Crisis etc etc).

Switching PSN accounts on Vita is a hassle but I think it'll be a good decision in the long run.

I guess I'll keep my 64gb card for my main EU account for digital only Vita games and PS+ stuff, then buy another 16gb or something for PS1 games.

We are less than 48 GC Hours away from having this game grace our PS3s, PSPs and Vitas.
What a time to be alive.

I am to take it that a discussion thread for this game will go up soon?

the next targets for konami should be to release a ps4/vita versions of suikoden 3 and my favorite in the series suikoden 5 (the sales for s2 must convince them!) T_T

How short? I don't have the patience for archaic, long and slow traditional jRPGs anymore. Im willing to give S2 a fair chance since I've been hearing for 15 years how good it is but Im not sure I can do that for S1 as well. I am, however, open to being convinced that the inferior S1 is really worth a try.

PAL versions?

I may create an European PSN account to buy both games again, and play the "fixed" version of Suikoden II. Also supporting the series, always an extra.

Oh God. Trodding through the god-awful PAL50 copies or get the fixed version? This is a tough decision.

They are neither long nor slow. Auto battle and not having to grind ever make a world of difference.

About 20 hours. Some mechanics on it are pretty archaic, and the walking on the first game is very, very slow, unless you equip a certain rune on one of your characters, but the battles are fast and dynamic. You can also just select the auto-battle option for the weaker enemies.
