Konami bringing Suikoden 1 & 2 PSone to PSN and VITA. #isthisreallife #basedkonami

They are neither long nor slow. Auto battle and not having to grind ever make a world of difference.

Can you give me an average number f hours to beat S1? What's short for someone is long for another.

Are we talking "15 hour short"? "30 hour short"? "50 hour short"?

About 20 hours. Some mechanics on it are pretty archaic, and the walking on the first game is very, very slow, unless you equip a certain rune on one of your characters, but the battles are fast and dynamic. You can also just select the auto-battle option for the weaker enemies.

Thanks.

If there's a S1 summary video on Youtube someone can recommend me I'd appreciate it. I'm so jumping into Suikoden II but I think Im skipping the inferior older brethren.

Unfortunately, I can't open youtube here at work... but if you don't find a good summary before playing, no worries. I played II first, and just missed a few references that I got when I played the first game, after.

So excited to finally be able to play these! When I was a kid I saw Sui2 in the shop but I only had money for 1 game so I bought Vandal Hearts 2 instead, because I had already played the first game so it was less of a gamble. Got home, saw there was a demo of Sui2 in the box, played it and loved it. The next time I had money I looked for it but I never saw it in the shop again. As the years passed and I was able to start Internet shopping, it had gotten too expensive.

So the only ones I played were 4 and 5. 4 was kinda weird but 5 was amazing :)

So I am going to buy both 1 and 2 once they release here on psn ^_^

You can even trigger it if you're playing it on PSP, PS3 or PSVita.

Awesome news! I played the original with a friend back when it was initially released, and don't remember too much. Planning to play through both soon! :)

Hi Alex,

I understand lack of time and backlogged games better than most.
While Suikoden 1 can be skipped easily - Suikoden 2 is a direct sequel, you don't need to know the history from part 1 - I would still recommend a playthrough of 1 before 2.

Firstly, part 2 is a natural progression from 1 in almost every respect. You may end up liking the series so much that you may get part 1 and play anyway. (I hope this is true)
Playing Suikoden 2 before Suikoden 1 may be jarring.

Secondly, if you have a completed save from Suikoden 1, you should be able to load that information into Suikoden 2 and get additional gameplay.

I hope that helps!

Thanks.

Not that I know of.

I personally don't think of the first Suikoden as inferior. It has some archaic mechanics, but the story and characters are very much worth the effort. Plus, playing Suikoden II will be so much better afterward because of all the references and returning characters. The beauty of the series is how interconnected the games are.

You can finish the first Suikoden in less than a week. (A weekend even if you are familiar with it.)

I know that one guy from Kotaku and another from IGN have been raving about this game since the ESRB leak, so I think I'm going to jump in. Question though, do I need to play the first before playing the sequel?

Do you have to? No.

Should you? YES.

You don't have to, but since the games share the same world, age and characters, you'll miss some pretty cool cameos and references. If you have the time, it's recomended to play the first one before.

If not, II is a fine game by itself, and you won't get lost on the story or anything like that, just miss a few references and one optional sidequest.

Refresh my memory, other than naming rights on McDohl, is there stuff that transfers from S1 to S2? I've played the first enough that unless there's something important, I think I might go straight to the second game, as I haven't played it nearly as many times.

I'll put it on spoiler tags, if anyone wishes that to be a surprise. Also, Suikoden I spoilers.

There is an quest to get McDohl on your party. Some characters from Suikoden I also get an extra scene with him on this quest, if you bring them.

He doesn't join your army in the castle, but you can put him on your party anytime after this quest, by going to his house in Gregminster.

Also, if you saved Gremio, he'll be there, and, iirc, will give you a Stew recipe.

As an small bonus, some characters will get extra levels, depending on their final level on Suikoden I.

Some levels and armor transfer over too.

You also can't recruit Tir without transferring data. Also, depending on what you did in the first game, your convoy partner for the McDohl sidequest will be different.

I looked at the original link and read a few pages of this thread but couldn't find anything about a price. Does anyone know how much these games are going to be in North America? They're supposedly coming out tomorrow. They must have an idea of the price...

Every RPG fan... MUST play Suikoden II.

Period.

Quoting this again since it might have been overlooked - the Konami rep has already confirmed the price in this thread:

Probably right. This doesn't make the game any less rare, but new fans now have the option of diving in at 9.99 rather than $120+.

A fair price for a game I've wanted to play for a very, very long time.

When this game was first released (1998?, 1999?) I was at Toys R Us in the gaming aisle. I had the slip for Suikoden II in my hands. I bought something else instead (can't remember what) and told my self "I'll pick up this game down the road." Who knew "down the road" would equal late 2014.

I've played S1, and I own III, IV, Tactics, and V, but I have always refused to play the PS2 games until I was able to finally play S2.

It's almost sad how excited I am for this.

Will this be up at midnight?

No.
It will be up whenever Grace Chen feels like it.

Suikoden 6 is never gonna happen. Never. If hell freezes over and Konami by chance does make one, it'll be closer to breath of fire 6, than what you would like it to be.

Suikoden VI has as much chance as Shenmune 3, Crash coming back to PlayStation, or TLG actually being finished.

Konami is basically a 2.5 series company now.

Sad but true. Such a shame Suikoden was my favorite RPG series :(. I would buy a console day zero with a proper Suikoden 6 game.

Wasn't there a game that was supposed to be "the spiritual successor to Suikoden" on Kickstarter last year?

I can't remember the name.

Suikoden 2 is the best. I sold my copy many years ago for a $120. Will be nice to have it back. Now on a side note I really want Star Ocean 2. Come on TriAce

I can't wait for this! Going into it completely blind (I don't even know the character names) and will be starting with 1. I've heard so many good things about the series but never had a chance to play them. Thanks Konami :)

Is there any tips a first time player should know? Or is it pretty straightforward?

In the Konami blog, what do they mean by "the new PSOne Classic games collection"? They make it sound like some kind of new initiative.

Out of all the PS1 RPGs I have played I gotta go with Suikoden 2 as being my favorite, though of course there still are some PS1 RPGs I have yet to play. :p

Very happy that this game is finally seeing a digital release, as many more people will be able to finally play this game and I'll be able to play it wherever I want on my Vita!

We are FINALLY getting Suikoden 2! Now to move on and pester Konami until they put Vandal Hearts on psn!

If they are going to call it "Playstation Classics" then they should have the classics on there.

I'm happy that I didn't break down and pay the exorbitant prices that sellers of the PS1 version are charging. Big day tomorrow.

Damn, this is a game I would have supported if I knew a KS existed.

You might also consider Americana Dawn, which also looks promising as a Suikoden-like. I'm hoping they hit their goal, as the premise sounds really interesting. Apparently they did have a previous (successful) kickstarter, but decided to expand the project, and it sounds like they're trying to do right by previous backers.

More on-topic: Best news I've heard in a long time. Will be happy to replay the first two games again on the Vita.

Would love to see Suikoden 3 and 5 sometime too, but not holding my breath.

Never played them can someone give me a quick summary of what they are and why they are loved so much?
Can't really speak for others, but I love them because they have a personal story that intermingles with a political story. They're heavily influenced by Chinese classics (the first two especially, by Water Margin and by Three Kingdoms and Liu Bang/Xiang Yu) and so they tend to have a much more "realistic" premise than other games. Where the magical does pop in, you're not a chosen one, you're just a guy that had a harsh destiny thrust upon you by chance.

ACtually is there a way to get a complete all 108 stars of Destiny save file for Suikoden 1 onto my Vita? I played the game tons of times and I'm not sure I can power through it again (tons of other games I got going on right now also) but would love to replay Suikoden 2 without having to go through all of S1 for like the 3rd times lol.

How short? I don't have the patience for archaic, long and slow traditional jRPGs anymore. Im willing to give S2 a fair chance since I've been hearing for 15 years how good it is but Im not sure I can do that for S1 as well. I am, however, open to being convinced that the inferior S1 is really worth a try.
The last time I played Suikoden 1, I followed a guide to get everything, and finished it in 8 hours. The second game is much longer, though. Like 40-60 hours.
