I know you've all been bumping Sucker for the past week but I don't use iTunes anymore. Went out yesterday, bought the album and here are my impressions...
This album turned out WAY better than I expected. Of course, I have a lot of faith in Charli as I think she's one of the most competent song writers around but the singles she released didn't do much for me. I love Boom Clap and Break the Rules, but London Queen, Gold Coins and Breaking Up are all kind of meh to me. The punk rock vibe was a great experiment but I felt like those tracks didn't really go anywhere sonically. They felt very flat. I was bracing myself for the rest of the album to sound kind of like that and was getting a bit disappointed.
Luckily, Sucker takes off right after Boom Clap. The tracks become a lot more fun/dancey, the melodies are memorable and the overall structure of the songs is much better. Favourite tracks are "Doing It", "Famous" and even old man Rivers shows he can still write great pop rock tunes with "Hanging Around". Finally, "Need Ur Luv" is just a fantastic album closer. The electronic doo wap is glorious and the whole song is infectiously catchy.
All in all, I'd give it a solid 4/5. I admire and respect Charli for the risks she took on this album and find her approach to making music fascinating. I'm eagerly anticipating the next album, hopefully we'll get it soon!
